IMac :: Warranty Start-up

View 3 RepliesHave a quick question. I'm considering buying an Imac from a reputable Apple imac reseller on Ebay that manually upgrade the hd's to either 2tb or an ssd drive on the imac 27. Will apple not honor the warranty and void it if they see the hd were not upgraded by them should the warranty ever have to be used?
Also, if the imac ever needs to be replaced by apple, do I .lose the hd for a stock imac model with only ,1tb hd? Hope that makes sense.
Does taking the front glass off of the imac display to clean behind it void the warranty? I am noticing some particles behind the glass and would just like to do it myself. I am still under warranty but i dont feel like bringing my imac to the store if i dont have to.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI purchased an iMac last October and my line of work demands extensive use of After Effects and Final Cut Pro. My iMac is fitted with the standard 1TB SATA hard drive, and lately I considered installing an SSD drive as I have been experiencing lags. In all my naivete I asked Apple Store/Service outlet where I originally bought my iMac, but they turned me down, claiming that "they are not allowed to order the extra parts and if they do proceed then my warranty will be void". Which means that about 2 years of AppleCare will go out of the window. I can always do it myself, but at the risk of damaging my iMac and facing a null warranty on top of it. I am still reeling in disbelief, is it really the case that Apple prohibits its customers from legitimately upgrading their computer at their own stores?

I have a G5 iMac - 2.1 ghz, 20", 250gb hd and 3gb ram, but it has been having problems starting up and it is also going to sleep midway through a task or at random times totally unprompted.
It now almost never starts up first time (I keep the iMac mains power lead always connected and the mains electricity supply turned on at all times now)- sometimes I will get the 'Start-up Chime' and then the cooling fans start spinning very loudly and then after a few seconds the iMac stops the start-up routine, but often when I try to start-up I don't even get the 'Start-up Chime' and I have to leave it for some time before trying again.
I can also now only get the iMac to run as a Firewire Target Disc by starting up with the T key held down and then using an old G4 (400mhz) Powerbook Titanium as the screen/keyboard by using the iMac HD as the startup disc for the Powerbook but this is obviously just a temporary work around.
I have also tried backing up all my data, and reinstalling the Mac OS X onto the iMac but the iMac still will not start-up normal and I still have to use it just as a Firewire HD.
I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedYes I plugged in the block heater.....
Tried to reset the SMC (apple's only advice)
Tried to kick it into boot menu... no luck
managed to boot to Leopard install disk. backed into Disk Utility.... Verify System Disk produces: "Invalid B-tree node size...Disk Verify / Repair fail".
too bad too sad... no more information.
I don't know enough to know whether this is a SW failure or a drive failure, and my searches has led me here.
Also, my very first post in a forum, I read the rules and I hope I have found the right forum for this query.
I have a 2.4 Intel MacBook that I purchased in April. I want to upgrade the memory to 4gb and swap out the hard drive for a bigger one. I've searched this forum and found conflicting replies. One said that replacing either RAM or my HD will void my warranty, another said that HD is user-replaceable and RAM is not, while another said both are fine. Any idea on what is accurate? How much would it cost to just take it to the Apple Store and have a genius replace the HD and RAM? I can do it myself, but I don't wish to void my warranty.
View 24 Replies View RelatedAbout two months ago the WiFi network I had set up was hacked by 14 people. I spent about an hour cleaning out the router, changing passwords, SSID's and encrypting the network moreso than it was prior. After that I downloaded a free trial of 'Virus Barrier' as I have zero trust of McAfee (the only other option I could find). After the trial ran out I deleted the icons as I'm not very familiar with Mac's and could not figure out if that would completely remove the software or not (I don't believe it did).I use GoogleChrome as our browser, while running Netflix or just turning it on (doing anything really) we get asked to approve for 'KsFetch' or 'Kfetch' to open a port. I did a little reading on this and did/have not found anything saying it is/was a threat, so I allow(ed) it. Due to the fact that our browser runs increasingly slow regardless of the fact that I consistantly delete cookies and history, I'm interested in having a technician who's more familiar with Mac's than myself; run diagnostics on the computer and basically just run a little 'check-up' and make sure it's okay.I think the slowness of the internet and the unresponsive browser may be due in part to our router which I don't believe is fully equipt to handle the amount of bandwidth that we use. But just to be on the safe side considering this was a very expensive computer, I want it looked into.So my question is (after all of that mess), if we get a warranty, would it cover general diagnostics? And Which warranty would be best (assuming there are variable kinds)?
If anybody with vast knowledge of Mac's and their upkeep reads this, would you happen to know if there may be something wrong with the computer?Earlier this morning it smelled a bit like burning plastic, it is generally used all day than off all night, after about ten minutes the smell went away (this was before I turned it on.).

We had a pretty bad storm here last night and we had lost power. At the time my imac was on and obviously turned off when we lost power. A few moments after we lost power we regained power, but now my imac won't start. Any ideas of what have my happened and what I can do it try to fix it>
Has anyone had any luck getting Apple to replace out of warranty batteries that are swelling?
I have a 2008 aluminum MacBook. Battery only has 170 cycles. Health is 96%. I noticed recently that, when using the system, it'd die at 8%. Just shut off. No warning or anything. I did an SMC reset, PRAM reset. Reinstalled Snow Leopard. Nothing changed. Didn't think much of it. Grabbed my system today and noticed the bottom casing was all uneven. I flipped the switch and took the one piece of the case off and noticed the battery was higher than it should be. Took it out and set it on the table and, sure enough, it wobbles all over the place.
I took some video and pictures with my iPhone 4 and emailed it to the woman who helped me earlier this year when the SuperDrive firmware update killed my DVD writer. Hopefully they'll do something about it. Battery is too young with too little use to be swelling like that.
have had 5 Magsafe Chargers two 60W and three 85W of the three 85W, two of them are the older ones(rectangular and bigger) and one is square one that came with my 2009 unibody Macbook Pro 13"I threw away one of the 60W one when it first broke(the original one that came with my 2006 MacBook

So I just bought the extended warranty for applecare for my MBP 13" 1 day before my warranty expires. (I checked my warranty status and it still says I'm covered.) However, I expected it to give me a number right away, but there's none--apparently they mail it. Kinda dumb, but okay. It won't arrive until after the warranty expires. Now, my question is: Can I activate the extended warranty when it arrives or will I be out of luck? I know that they say that you can purchase the warranty within 1 year of purchasing your hardware. However, I want to be absolutely sure, or else I'll be out a couple hundred dollars and have nothing to show for it.

I have a macbook pro6,2 and I want to take out my CD drive and replace it with a SSD. Will this make void my warranty? And is there a way to do it without voiding? ie. bring it to apple and get them to do it? Ideally I'd like to remove my CD drive, put my hard-drive in it's place and then put the SSD where the hard-drive was

View 2 Replies View RelatedI work at a University with a very "by the book" IT director. He is under the assumption that installing third-party parts (e.g. RAM, hard drives, etc) in an Apple product (such as a Mac Pro or MacBook) "voids the warranty" because this apparently is the case with some PC brands. I know this is not the case and that Apple characterizes RAM as a user-upgradable part -- as long as you don't break anything while installing it, it does NOT void your warranty (case in point: Apple even gives detailed instructions on how to upgrade).Â
However, being the stickler that he is, my IT director will not take my word for it -- he needs proof from Apple that it's okay for us to upgrade these machines ourselves. Can anyone provide a link on an Apple (or similarly reputable) site clearly stating that this is the case? Does such documentation exist?

I want to upgrade my aluminum macbook's 5400 RPM hard drive to a 7200 RPM hard drive.
My question is: Will upgrading the hard drive void the warranty on the new macbook?
I have the 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook with about 2 years of Applecare left. Would it void the warranty if I replaced the hard drive? If not, would any hard drive issues I might have in the future be covered under Applecare?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe warranty on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" expires in 2 days and my battery seems to be dying. I wish it would hurry. This morning, I got a "Service Battery" warning with a "Check Battery" message in the Power section of About This Mac. Took my machine to the Genius Bar this evening and it passed the battery diagnostic with 81.1% health.
90 minutes later, I'm sitting outside at Barnes & Noble next to the Apple Store and I get another Service Battery warning. My full capacity charge is down to 3928 from the 4258 mah observed while at the Genius Bar. I carried the machine back to the Genius Bar but it was, unfortunately, closed. They made note of the warning and set an appointment for me to come back tomorrow.
Now (a few hours after my last Genius Bar visit), my charge capacity is 4210 - very slightly above the 80% capacity level needed for the tech to replace my battery. Why is my machine so schizo? Any chance there's a relationship between the machine's temperature and reported charge capacity?
OK, I know, its a stupid question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer. But if I were to take the bottom off to clean out dust would I lose the year of Applecare I have left?
Recently my fans rev up to 4500rpm when doing simple browsing. They never used to so I'm thinking that almost 2 years of use has caused a buildup of dust... I really don't like unnecessary fan noise...
I have a refurbished macBook Pro and everything was working fine (it's about 9 months old). So everything was fine till suddenly the right fan started making these horrible noises. Kinda like a motor boat along with with ticking clanking sounds. It comes and goes: also Istat shows that the max RPM is 3000 or so.
Thinking something was stuck in the fan I figured i'd take the back cover off to take a look, and now I have stripped one of the outer screws holding the back cover. Now i'm worried my warranty is void, even though the fan issue was not my fault but the stripped screw is.
I plan on going to the apple store soon to see what they say but I was curious as to what you guys think first. Will the apple store fix the screw and then replace that fan?
in the middle of april 2010 I bought a MacBook Pro core i7, everything works fine but after install Mac OS X Lion the machine is freezing with Photoshop, iphoto, Youtube, Safari and the login screen, anothers times show a lots of color in the display and freezing again. To fix all this issues, I was reset the PRAM, SMC, reinstall Lion after format the HD, etc. Nothing works and make an appointment in genius bar, I show to them this article url...and they tell me that my machine is not elegible for the warranty because the problems are differents.
