got a 13" mbp and will be installing bootcamp soon but i want to leave out another partition so i can put in music/video/whatever files where both mac and windows will be able to access? u guys know any free partition utility?

I would like to upgrade my hdd because I am running out of room. Â
I understand that I could most likely back up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data. That should put both partitions the way they were onto the new hdd. At least that is what I think.Â
But I would like to have a bigger partition for windows and I am unsure how I would do this correctly. I don't know if reinstalling the backed up data to the new drive, deleting the bootcamp partition, then creating a new partition and reinstalling my same windows would work. Would I even be able to install windows a second time on the same computer without having to buy another key?Â
Final thoughts:
1. Will backing up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data put both partitions the way they were onto the new hdd?
a. Will the OSX partition get all the new space?Â
2. How do I get a bigger windows partition on the new hdd, while keeping all of my existing windows content? Â

I just got a new Macbook Pro Retina 2014. I enabled FileVault on the startup process. But after a while I encountered the bug in which FileVault never finishes the encryption because it asks for power connection. Unable to disable FileVault, I decided to do a fresh install. So I booted up recovery mode, and tried to erase the partition. An error came up:" This Core Storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group", and the partition disappeared.Â
Now, if I choose the main drive, the + option is disabled, and I just can't create a partition. I'm currently unable to use this computer at all right now.Â

I have previously successfully installed boot camp before but recently have reformated and repartitioned my drive into multiple sections, One for the OSX and one for Multimedia, Movies Music and pics.Now Boot camp is telling me, Boot Camp cannot install because your primary drive is partitioned.So My prediciment is this. I want boot camp, because I need windows for games... no problem. It runs great and there are just a few custom things the previous owner did that have not caught up to me: the available disk space in Leopard is almost completely used up. There are two other drives (or partitions I believe they are called), each of which has roughly 25GB available. Does anyone know how I can get this free space in the other partitions transferred to my main leopard os?
View 3 Replies View Relatedbeen trying to set up something like this under bootcamp butgetting nowhere. even lost half of my mac hd in the process.support couldn't get disk utility to recover it. finally got itback with a linux live disk called 'parted magic.' that allowedme to delete the ntfs partitions and leave them as free space. once i'd done that disk utility could then resize the mac hdpartition to the whole disk and i was able to start over.can a partition scheme as i've described above be done on a mac?

The annoying thing is, when I hold 'alt' to get into one of them, they all show up as 'Windows' (ie, OSX, Windows, Windows, Windows as my choice). A smarter man would remember, or write down what's what - but I'm wondering (as I'm not smarter) if there's a way to rename how they appear in this startup point. I've renamed the drives on the desktop so I know what's what - but it'd be nice to be able to change the startup option too.

I formatted it into 3 partitions: One HFS+, the second FAT, and the third also FAT. For some odd reason, though, Windows refuses to recognize the FAT partitions and mount them, ignoring the HFS+ partition it doesn't recognize in the process. Instead, what it's doing is mounting only the FIRST partition on the drive, ignoring anything else there - even if said partition is the GPT protective partition. I'm understandably baffled by this.The reason I'm doing this is to make a "universal" development drive. I tried formatting the whole drive as FAT, which sort of works (my IDE loads from the drive okay, but refuses to update itself, complaining that the profile is in use, only tested on the Mac side). So, I came up with what I thought was the brilliant idea of mixed filesystem partitioning to work around the issue... but of course that doesn't work either.

I learned how to enable Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's NTFS read-write capability today and so I no longer need to keep my first two partitions as FAT32 (especially since I have files larger than 4 GB I would like to store on them). View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a macpro setup with two partitions.Originally one partition assigned to Snow Leopard.I log in using a network user (using OSX server) and that user has local Admin rights.I setup a new instance of Snow Leopard on the secondary Partition and logged in using the network user.This had the effect of using the partition 1 Home directory for this user and I can't get the secondary partition to use itself for storing the users home directory.The workaround I have is to log in to Partition 2 snow leopard with a local admin user then temporarily rename the Users folder on partition 1. Next login to partition 2 as the network user, then everything gets created on partition 2 as expected.Finally rename the Partition 1 Users folder back.Now I can log in to either partitoin with the same user and have different local home setups.

I have a Drobo hung via USB off my airport extreme. When I first connected it, the Drobo was formatted to be 2 tb but has since grown to over 6 tb in capacity. Now, one of the great things about Drobo is whenever you add space, it will partion the drives to give you the additional space, but this only really works if you have it connected to your computer directly.I have close to 6 tb of available space on my drobo, and only about 2 being used. My mac thinks the drobo is full and won't copy to it. Any way to get my iMac or airport extreme to recognize there is actually more space, or partitions?

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage.So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

View 3 Replies View RelatedFairly simple, I've added an automatic contents page to my document, but I was hoping to have it use two columns instead of one to conserve space since none of the headings are especially wide. However, when I change the number of columns, it screws up the contents, whatever is used to space out the titles and the page numbers doesn't seem to adjust automatically.
I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to do this without manually entering the contents?
I have about 250GB of music in my iTunes Music folder, too much for any of my player devices with the exception of the computer itself. The "iTunes Music" folder is located on an external drive. I want to create multiple libraries to simplify syncing with individual devices, named something like "Nano silver 16", "classic 160", "iPhone", "iPad", etc. I know how to create the new libraries from info at: [URL] Questions:3) Is there a way to switch the "iTunes Music" folder to sort by album, (instead of by artist, then album, which lists each individual song of a compilation (Greatest Hits of...". "soundtrack", "duets..., etc. in separate folders with one song each). Royal pain! 2) How do I populate the individual libraries from my media folder once I have created them? I can't find any info to do this. Am I right that these just reference the real files, and don't duplicate them in a new location/folder? I don't want to increase the space taken up by new library files. 3) Where should all of the library files live to make it easy to find and switch from one to another? I have had a seagate hybrid for a semester of school. I recently open disk utility to realize there's a big chunk of the hard drive allocated as "free space." I never partitioned the drive yet in utility it show's the drive as 2 partitions. Is this normal?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWut up Mac Peeps, pretty advanced Mac user and I just can't figure out how to delete the hidden partitions that Windows 7 creates. I've installed Windows 7 twice on this HDD with Leopard v.10.5.8 on it and now I have 2 small partitions at 200MB each. This means 4 partitions (1 for Leopard, 1 for Windows 7, and 2 hidden partitions). They don't show up in Disk Utility and I tried removing the entire BootCamp partition, then re-installing Leopard just so that I could configure the HDD to "One Single Partition" with Disk Utility on the Leopard Disc while re-installing and THAT didn't work for the hidden partitions either...couldn't believe it...
I'm hoping I don't have to use a Windows DOS Boot Disc to format or something...not sure if they work on MBPs but I would try...I could also use Seagate HDD Tools but I'm trying to keep this simple.
I replaced the 160GB drive in my 13" MBP with a 640GB drive. I now have the 160 in an external enclosure. I got the huge drive so I can finally copy all my crap from my PC to my MBP and have it in one place. I don't have any big external drives, so I had 2 ideas:
- Make the 640 into 100 and 540 partitions, with the system on 100, and use the external 160 with time machine (assuming that's possible with TM?).
- Make the 640 into 160 and 480, system on 160, clone the system to the external 160 regularly as a backup. This seems better since the external will then be a full working system (I assume), in case my internal drive would ever break.
With either of these, I'm wondering how easy it is to separate all my media onto the other partition, like the itunes library, pictures folder, movies, downloads, etc. Or Should I just stick with one huge partition, and figure out some other partial-backup solution / wait till I get a big external?
