OS X V10.7 Lion :: Want To Wipe My HD And Create 2 Partitions?
Jun 28, 2012
I want to use my time Machine to reinstall what I have now, and install 10.7 Lion on the other partition, my question is the Lion next month for $19.95...is it a complete install, or a upgrade?

I just got a new Macbook Pro Retina 2014. I enabled FileVault on the startup process. But after a while I encountered the bug in which FileVault never finishes the encryption because it asks for power connection. Unable to disable FileVault, I decided to do a fresh install. So I booted up recovery mode, and tried to erase the partition. An error came up:" This Core Storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume group", and the partition disappeared.Â
Now, if I choose the main drive, the + option is disabled, and I just can't create a partition. I'm currently unable to use this computer at all right now.Â

Is it possible to create a couple of bootcamp partitions?
I'd like to try Windows 7 but I'd like to be able to keep the XP partition as well.

When using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.
I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

I was moving around some files from an old to a new macbook pro and I ended up deleting some files so now whenever I try to put a file on the desktop it says that I don't have permission to do that operation. I just got this macbook and cant access my old one at the moment, so the question is: how do I totally wipe the hdd and install osx lion again?
Is it possible to open my macbook in target mode and delete everything then when I start it up, open it in recovery/rescue mode and install lion again from the servers, or do I need to wait and get my macbook again? I just want to use it like a brand new machine (no personal data on it). I already tried reinstalling lion, but that did nothing.

So, I installed Lion, but here's how I did it. Downloaded from Mac Store. Created new partition. Rebooted and installed the new OS on the new partition Booted into new partition and deleted the old one completely. Now this is all fine except now I only have 300GB from a 1TB drive.
As you can see from the screenshot, I cannot adjust the size of the partitions and when I delete the newly created partition (Macintosh HD) I still cannot make the partition larger in size. Did I do this the wrong way around?

I woke up, went to my late 2011 MacBook Pro and it took forever for the display to wake up, and it kept showing beach ball. After some minutes, the login prompt came up but with the beach ball still spinning. After waiting for like 3 minutes I decided to shut it down by pressing the power button. The computer restarted and it's giving me a screen to re-install Lion from a backup or from the app store. I shut it down to see if it will work fine, but I keep getting the same screen re-install screen. Now what I want to know is will re-installing from the app store wipe away my documents? And don't have a backup to re-install from.

Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) it keeps freezing and it takes much longer to boot compared to Snow Lepoard.I upgraded it from 2GB to 4GB hoping it would run smoother but it was so hot in operation (I literally couldn't hold it after just a few minutes) I had to take it back to 2GB. I also notice that all my apps return on logon even though I have specificed not to re-open apps.I have verified and repaired the disk using Disk Utility and also ran a supposed recovery of Lion but it took 1hr (including Lion download) however when I logged back on it was the same software and data etc; is it possible to do a complete data wipe and install Lion? It has updated to the latest software however I'm starting to get very frustrated; just earlier the whole thing froze and I had to force it to power off.

I just upgraded my HD to a 1T drive. I had recently reinstalled everything on the original HD, and enabled FileVault2 on the drive and didn't want to go through the tedious process of reinstalling everything. Instead, I used Clonzezilla to image the drive over. Everything works properly. My new drive boots as expected and everything on the FV2 partition shows up properly. Of course, now I would like to extend my FV2 partition to fill the remaining part of the disk. Are there any tools (3rd party or native) that allow me to resize my FV2 partition? Everything I have found to date indicates that I have to disable (decrypt) FV2, resize, and then re-enable FV2. Seems like an extremely long and arduous process. Has noone been able to write a utitility to extend the partition size without needing to decrypt everything? I'm running Lion 10.7.3.Â

One of my co-workers is upgrading his old Mac Pro to a new iMac with a 256GB SSD and an internal 2TB ATA drive. He has a Time Machine backup to run the restore from, but his account is larger than the 256GB SSD. Ultimately he wants to keep his stuff on the 2TB drive and run the OS and his account on the SSD, but I couldn't think of a way to split that during the restore.

I realized Mac OS X 10.7.4 will only read NTFS partitions (can't write to it). I could install a third party driver or use FAT32. I decided to split the external Seagate HDD into two partitions (NTFS and Mac OS Extended FS). Â
I went to Mac OS X's Disk Utility, but there was no way to partition the current single 500 GB NTFS partition with my existing data. It seems like I have to erase it with my data, and then partition into two. Is that how it supposed to work? This was on a new Mac Mini with all updates.

We just purchased an older mac book pro to replace our even older G4 powerbook which cannot run some of the software my wife wants. This has both OSX LION and Windows 7 using Bootcamp on it.As soon as we get it we will want to make a clone backup of the hard drive. With the powerbook we used a combination of CCC (carbon copy cloner) and time machine. While CCC will clone the OSX partition it will not work on the Windows partition of the hard drive. While I realize that I could use a Windows based product to clone that portion I really would prefer that the clone be made of the entire disk with a product that relies on neither system.Back in the day we used to write stuff like that, but I keep thinking someone else must have already done so.

If someone maliciously runs the "Remote Wipe" feature from an iPad/iPhone against your computer or laptop, is the data recoverable (with something like Data Rescue), or does it run a secure wipe with n times overwriting of files?

IMac with 10.7.3 and Seagate GoHlex 2TB external drive. Using the disk utility why is was not backing up.The Seagate is now asking the question "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". The verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions buttons are not active. My reference "The missing manual" does not cover this challenge.

My Time Machine drive is failing according to Disk Utility. It's trying to fix it but is now stuck on: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." It's been there for hours. How long should I wait before assuming that it's just hung and force quit Disk Utility / re-boot (possibly making the problem worse)? One answer I saw was "as long as it takes" but realistically, I surely can't just leave it running for weeks. There must be a maximum time before I should assume it's not going to work.

I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? (The problem started when the Lion USB stick was not yet available)Â One possible solution is to buy a new MacBook. I may have to, because the one I am using is falling apart.Â
So, suppose I have this brand new MacBook and no connection to the AppStore. Is there a way to create a recovery DVD or USB stick from the new MacBook, without buying the official USB stick?Â
All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.Â

I created an Automator Service to restart my computer in Bootcamp (since I was getting very tired of having to navigate to the Startup Disk Prefence pane every time). What I would like to do, is make this service have a global keyboard shortcut. However, when I try to set one in the Keyboard Shorcuts preferences (i.e. double-clicking and holding down the desired keys), my computer just beeps at me.Â
I thought maybe it was not allowing the specific shortcut I was trying - thinking maybe it was already in use. So I tried many other key combinations - enough to come to the conclusion that this was not the issue.Â
