MacBook Pro :: Best Way To Compress Longer HD Videos For Web?
Apr 9, 2012
I am struggling with the best way to post HD, as well as SD videos to the web - Vimeo as well as YouTube sites. Some of my files are up to an hour long, and above. I've tried mp4, H.264 compression, multi-pass, as well as ProRes in various settings. The files are either too small or too large. I have an stand-alone Flash encoder, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time. My computer only has a Duo Core - its the first Intel processor. Is it too slow to process these large Video files?

I was previously running Leopard with iPhoto '08. With this setup all .mov format movies that I took with my digital camera imported into iPhoto along with the pictures. They showed up in thumbnail view along with the pictures and I could launch the movies in Quicktime by double-clicking on the movie thumbnail in iPhoto.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard (but still using iPhoto '08) the video thumbnails still show up, but double-clicking on them does nothing. Double-clicking on image thumbnails still opens the image as normal. I can still view the movies by right-clicking, selecting "show file," and then double-clicking on the movie thumbnail in Finder.

Recently videos are no longer playing properly on Safari, though they are on other browsers.Â
YouTube videos flicker and often display no video while the audio plays. Today where video should appear on The Onion site there was only the progress bar, with no audio either.Â
I was going to delete and reinstall Safari, but Momma Apple don't like that. What to do? A Flash problem at only affects Safari?

I use iPhoto to organize my (tens of thousands of) photos and videos. My iPhoto library has grown to 565 GB and I really need to reduce that. Â
I know that it's possible for me to split off some of the photos (e.g. the older ones that I don't view very often) into a separate iPhoto library, which I could store on a different hard drive. However, since I have a laptop and use it in lots of different locations, I'm not too keen on the idea of having those photos stored in an external hard drive that I'd have to retrieve/bring with me whenever I want to view the photos. Â
My question is, can I split off the older photos into another iPhoto library, but leave that library on my laptop hard drive and just compress it? Then un-compress it whenever I want to view those particular photos?Â

Is this all the compression I can expect to get from compressing an iPhoto folder?
I searched old threads and it seems .JPEG files dont compress as well as other file types. Any advice other than splitting the file up? Shown is the Zip file and the original folder.

I have legally downloaded a live grateful dead show from [URL] and I want to send it to my friend. The show is about 1gb in size so I can't send it in a single email. Is there any way to compress a folder of all of the songs to make it small enough to send?
If not are there any other methods I could use other than sending the files individually?

Just looking for opinions on the best software used to compress high quality video for uploading to web. I'd like to make my videos smaller in size but maintain a decent quality to the picture. I'm certain there's a thread on here somewhere, but can't seem to find it.
PS. I am running Snow Leopard (so I have quicktime), also have Final Cut Express. I know there's a free program out there I thought for doing this type of thing but can't recall the name of it?

This feature was available in Tiger and dropped in Leopard. Actually there is a compress PDF feature (either via an applescript that can be downloaded) or using Quartz filter "reduce filesize". However, when dealing with bitmap figures embedded in the PDF, both solutions in Leopard yield very dissappointing results. Whilst in Tiger, the results were outstanding for both file size reduction and maintaining the bitmap clarity.

What is the safest corrupt-recoverable way to compress a large (16GB) set of files for use with mac and windows?
I have tried winrarring into parts, but winrar doesn't support par recovery, and unrarx for mac doesn't tell you which part is corrupt.
Is there a half decent .rar extraction utility for mac that can tell you which part is corrupt, and can read .rev (winrar recovery) files? It seems simple but I've tried so many.

I want to compress a PDF I have created. I've been told that in Preview, in the Print dialog box, in the PDF menu there is an option "Compress PDF." That option doesn't appear in my dropdown menu. It doesn't appear in that menu regardless of what program I'm selecting Print from. I have a new MacBook Pro I bought last August with the latest version of Lion. How do I get that compression feature to work on my system?

I have hundreds of one-page files to email to a client. I don't seem to be able to understand how to compress them so I can email them. Some of them have photos, so I thought it would be a good idea to keep each compressed file to 20. For example, I thought I followed the instructions correctly when I went to the folder in Word and selected 20 of the files using Command. I didn't open the files or move them or create another folder for them because the instructions didn't tell me to do that. I did right click as the instructions said. Nothing. Obviously, there are some missing steps.
