MacBook Pro :: Battery Dies Around 50 Percent?

Oct 10, 2010

The battery on my MBP (2007 2.33 Core 2 Duo) has started to die, just like the three others that came before it. It seems like it's only been a year or so since I got a new battery. Yesterday, I was using it unplugged and the computer shut off when the battery was around 58%. I have never seen a battery shut off that early. The worst I had seen before that was a previous battery that would die around 35%.

A couple questions:

1. Is there something I am doing that is causing my batteries to keep dying so quickly? An Apple Genius told me that keeping the computer plugged in all the time can burn out the battery. I don't really want to bother putting the computer through unnecessary charge cycles to keep up the battery life.

2. Is there any way to recoup some of the lost battery life of my current battery, or is it just dead?

3. In replacing the battery, should I buy another Apple battery from the website, or are there better quality 3rd party MBP batteries?

4. On a side bar, I am thinking about purchasing a new MBP, but I am worried that the battery will have the same problem, and it will be much more of a hassle to fix because everything is internal now. I hate having to hand my computer over to Apple Care for a whole day and be without it.

MacBook Pro :: Turns On But Then Dies Before It Starts Up

Mar 19, 2012

My MacBook Pro which is only a year old was working fine, the only small problem was that it wouldn't play a video, so I restarted it but it never came back on. So I restarted it manually, the small light on the edge lit up, the screen with the apple came up along with the load bar, the empty load bar flashes a couple of times then the computer totally shuts off. Have turned starting in safe mode, same thing. Have tried starting holding down apple + option + R + P when turning on, same thing, have started starting up with the install disc in, same thing..

OS X :: 2nd Hard Drive Dies In MacBook Black?

Jun 1, 2009

I've got a 2gb MacBook Black, which is about 2.5-3 years old.

Last year (about October I think) I had the hard drive fail, at which point I got the IT guy in work to replace it with a spare from a similar machine. The new drive has just failed - it makes tick-tick noises when you try to boot up, and the ?-folder icon appears on the screen. The new drive is dated 2008, so it's not like it got an old wreck.

Could I have another problem that's killing hard drives? The only non-standard thing in the machine is a memory upgrade from [URL]. Are there any common user behaviours which would increase the risk of hard drive failures. The machine is left at home most days, and is always carried around in a padded sleeve/case.

The machine mostly gets used for internet browsing, with a bit of iTunes and photo organising, but nothing particularly heavy.

It's a Hitachi hard drive that was in it - I've ordered a Seagate as a replacement. If it dies I'll get a new machine, but I'm hoping I won't have to.

MacBook Pro :: After Speakers Plugged In / Audio Dies

May 28, 2010

This only happens occasionally, but sometimes when I have my speakers plugged into my 2010 macbook pro, the sound just dies. If I unplug the speakers the sound comes through the built in speakers, but the only way for me to get the jack to work again is by restarting my computer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a hardware or a software issue?

MacBook Pro :: 15" Trackpad And Keyboard Dies Randomly?

Dec 1, 2009

I bought the 15" Alum Pro model before they came out with the newer Unibody. Up until now it's been the best thing that ever happened to me. My problem is about 3-4 times during the workday the keyboard and trackpad both freeze causing me to manually power down. After it happened about 5 times, I decided to spend two hours on the phone with Applecare.Long story short...they had me check the ram and do a diagnostics on the hard drive ( I guess the equivalent to disk defrag?) Taking the battery out and going through a bunch of processes that all came back fine and after all that the problem persists.

MacBook :: Fresh Install Of Leopard Dies But Windows Lives?

Sep 1, 2009

This is a bit of an odd one.

My GF dropped her MacBook the other night, and since then Leopard would only be able to start in safe mode, and then be very slow accessing the hard drive. I figured the drive had died, but I decided to test it on other computer and it works fine.

Anyway, I did a fresh install of Leopard, which went fine and boots up, but any subsequent boot it dies. Booting in verbose mode, it comes up with some errors on the efiboot screen (I can't remember exactly what they were). I still have access to all the usual boot options etc.

So on a whim, I boot camped up the disk and installed Windows 7 to see what would happen. It installed fine, and works 100%. No complaints about anything at all (except there being Windows on there :P), all hardware functional!

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem Leopard (10.5 and 10.6) might be having? I've erased the drive several times, both quick and zeroed, repaired it and so on.

MacBook Pro :: I7 Taking Forever To Wake Up When Battery Dies - C2d Didnt?

Jul 26, 2010

So when my mbp shuts off after the batter dies and I plug it in and press the power button it takes awhile for the screen to come back on, and then for the little white bar at the bottom, and then when everything is back, I cant use any apps for a minute or two because they won't open. My c2d mbp would just wake right back up and be ready to go.

MacBook Pro :: Partition On SSD Broken After Falling Into Sleep When Battery Dies?

Apr 4, 2012

I have a mid2009 MacBook Pro 15" 2.8 Ghz with an 1TB in the main bay and a Verbatim 128GB SSD in my optibay. I also upgraded my RAM to 2x 4GB. It runs the latest Lion version.

Here is my problem:

When I work on my battery and there's no power left, it automatically shuts down. Right? The sleep/wake light lights until the battery is out of power. If I then try to reboot, the Apple and a loading-bar appear which shows that it is recovering the previous session so that I can continue where I left (right?).

The problem is that it fails at 1/3rd of the bar and the screen goes black. After resetting PRAM and the other resettable things, it still won't boot on that partition.

I tried to repair from an external Lion installation drive, my second partition (which also runs lion) and from the Recovery HD (of both partitions). I always get the same problem (see picture).

This is happening to me all the time. After several reboots i can acces my files again, but I still can't boot from my partition because it fails loading my last session. It certainly isn't the disks fault because I can boot from the other partition on that very same disk w/o any problems. Right now I'm trying to make an identical copy with Disk Utility (as described by Apple).

My question now is: Can I repair the partition by any means without reformating it (as I did the last times)?

Furthermore: Can I just disable the function that tries to backup/restore my last session so that my MBP just shuts down or does a hard shutdown when the battery dies?

PS: My Time Machine drive is at the moment not available, so I couldn't backup in a while, I need the files.

Mac Pro :: What Happens When Graphics Card Dies

May 19, 2012

I was working in Illustrator when my screen went mosaic and scrambled, went purple, then black. Restarted the mac in safe mode and had the screen back for a few moments then it froze, scrambled and quit. Since then I have not successful rebooted with the desktop coming up. I think it may be the graphics card, (I hope), because it became quite loud before I shut the computer down. I hope it's neither the ram or the mother board.

MacBook Pro :: No Low Battery Warning?

Sep 2, 2014

I replaced the battery in my MBP which wouldn't charge or run for more than 1 hour.  Now, with the new battery, I have 2 issues:

1--battery status in menu bar does not change.  It shows it's at 28% all the time

2--I not longer get a warning that my battery is about to run out.

This is a drag since the computer keeps going to sleep on me because it's run out of juice unbeknownst to me.

MacBook :: System Goes To Sleep At Random Without Warning

May 9, 2008

When I'm working, sometimes it goes to sleep without any warning, also with a full battery. It never happens when the magsafe is connected. I noticed that when I wake the macbook again, in the battery icon (top-right), there is a "X" instead of it's capacity%.. Therefore I blame my battery for the random sleep. (the "X" dissapears almost immediately after waking up)

Here is a copy-and-paste of the console log:
Code:
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel System Wake
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel Previous Sleep Cause: -60

When I let it go to sleep in a normal way, it says 5 in stead of -60. Does anyone knows the meaning of the -60? Google doesn't..
