MacBook Pro :: Sudden Shutdown Without Low Battery Warning
Nov 13, 2008
I bought a MacBook Pro September 2007, the last months I have experienced a sudden shutdown of it without any low battery warning. After browsing around the forums I found a app called Coconut Battery which I installed. This is what it showed me: What I can do to get my battery performance better? Do I have to invest in a new battery? And aren't the prices on those extreme?
I've had my MBP since Oct of 2007. About 2 weeks ago it would not turn on so I had the logic board replaced. After I got it back it would randomly shut down, the only solution I could do is take out the battery and work at the lower clockspeed but it still shut down without warning, just less frequently. I thought it might be the power cord or the battery so I got those replaced but it is still happening. The first day I had the battery (yesterday) it worked fine, no random shutdowns, I calibrated the battery per apple instructions and today it worked great (during charge up and plugged in at full charge) for about 5 hours, then it shut down, I turned it back on and it shut down shortly after, I reset the SMC by taking out the battery and holding down the power button and putting it back in and it shut down again.
Then I tried to run the hardware test and it shut down again so now I am posting this out of frustration. I also reset the pram and it shut down again. Now it won't stay on for more than getting through the login screen. I don't have applecare but they replaced the logic board for no cost (which I don't fully understand), I'd rather not take it back but I will if you guys have no ideas. I looked up (with difficulty) the previous shutdown code: -2 (http://www.macwizard.com/errors.html) and it said it was a "General System Error (VBL Mgr, Queue) -2 vTypErr invalid queue element" but I have no idea what that means.
I have experienced in the last few days a sudden shut down on my MacBook Pro. I've searched the web and found something about RSS (Random Sudden Shutdown) but I still can't find a solution.
So I've been using my new macbook pro with retina display for about a week now, and its shutdown several times on its own. The computer just goes black, and then turns on with a grey screen that says it had to shutdown and is restarting.Â
This is a mystery. I recently switched a number of files and applications between computers, installing some stuff from a 2001 vintage iMac on a Mini, OSX 10.4.11. Now when I go to shut down the Mini, up comes the closing warning box. Previously, pressing the return key would activate the Shutdown, now nothing happens so I must always click the Shutdown box using the mouse.
I did a google search on this and just came up with answers/solutions that I have already tried but haven't had much luck.I have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro. Till about a day or two ago I use to get amazing battery performance out of the computer. I mean 8-9 hours without major issues. Now suddenly for the last couple of days the batter life after a fully charged battery shows up as 3 hours. I can't figure out why.
When I plug in my MacBook Air (2011), when the battery indicator hits about 50% all of a sudden it jumps up to 100%. Then, when I unplug the power cord, after a few minutes it drops back down to 50%.
I have a MacBook Pro. Keeps completely shutting down all the time when its fully charged and at random times when it is at 65% for example. Do I need to get a battery replacement? Or do I have a virus?
My MacBook shuts down when the battery drains all the way down. I'm pretty sure back in the days of PPC lappies, they went to sleep before the battery died. Is it supposed to shut down, or is something goofed?
I've got a 17" Macbook Pro from May of 2007 that is serving me well now in my last year of college. The battery health began to deteriorate last year so I replaced it with a new one from Apple (a hefty $120).
Recently, the past two times that I have left for class (with my MBP fully charged) it has drained while shutdown (completely turned off NOT just "asleep"). When I say it drains, I mean it has roughly 2-5% of its battery life left giving me about 20 minutes of power until I get back home for the day.
Here's the kicker: the battery is in good condition with plenty of cycles left (see system profile for power below.)
Any thoughts? Try a new battery? Could it be the charger? What system components, if any, run during a complete shutdown and could these be malfunctioning?

when i first recieved my macair it was not charged dipite that the catalog says that is should be ready for used. I charged it and it worked pretty ok, and i even put it to sleep and no problems occured. however when i shut it down for a few hours i openned it to find that the battery was completely drained. it's doing it all the time when i shut it down! how could that be.? This is a mid 2013 13" model.
Just checking to see if anyone else has had that this problem since upgrading to 10.6.2 I have an older MBP that is on its second battery. I dont normally use that battery as this is my only computer. it has about 61 cycles on it and seems to be in good health. the MBP turned its self off all of a sudden with about 60% charge left
My 17 inch Mac pro laptop just shut down and I can't get it to turn on again. This has happen multiple times over the last six months. Looked through the forum and tried removing the battery and resetting the SMC control to no avail. I was having issues also with the screen a month ago but that resolved by itself. When I took it into the genius bar for screen problems I was told I'd probably need a new CPU board because the vram may be going bad and they just don't fix that problem. Have held off because of a potential $500 repair and awaiting ivy bridge technology. How I can restart my portable. Right now you turn on the machine and the front light stays on for 2 sec and you hear the machine click off?
My school-computer (iBook 14" 1,42 Ghz G4, running OSX 10.4.10) has developed some unpleasant habbits lately. With lots of batterycharge left, 28-50%, it shuts down without warning. I try to restart it, and it gets to various stages of booting before shutting down again. It won't run untill i plug in the powercable, and then it starts of from almost half full charge. I did a bit of searching on the forums, and installed coconutbattery with the attached (depressing) result. Tried resetting the pmu, which didn't stop it from shutting down on me again 46 mins later. Does this mean I need to replace the battery?
I've been having an issue with my Macbook Pro, it keeps turning off while on battery power while I am playing a game (Starcraft II) despite having sufficent charge remaining. It won't turn back on until I plug it back in. Usually when I turn it back on the time and date are reset and the password to my wifi has to be rentered. The most recent time this happened after I plugged it back in the battery still had 79% charge remaining. I've tried recalibrating the battery and resetting the SMC both which did not solve the problem. The system report states that the battery's condition is normal and I ran a hardware test which also came back normal.
Info:MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
My 15" Mid-2009 Macbook Pro is giving the 'Service Battery" warning. System information says:Â
"Battery Information:  Model Information: Serial Number:         W0934AD9777VA Manufacturer:         SMP Device Name:    bq20z451 Pack Lot Code:         0 PCB Lot Code:         0 Firmware Version:         3 Hardware Revision:         3 Cell Revision:         100 Charge Information: Charge Remaining (mAh):         4477 Fully Charged:         Yes Charging:    No Full Charge Capacity (mAh):         4477 Health Information: Cycle Count:         377 Condition:         Service Battery Battery Installed:         Yes Amperage (mA):         -1157 Voltage (mV):         12156"
So it looks as if the battery is OK, but it is not charging properly. I obviously have to take it to be repaired - but what can they do? I understood that they can't replace the battery, so what are the options? It has only been through 377 charge cycles - that doesn't sound a lot to me - but is it? Shouldn't a laptop that's only just over 2 1/2 years old still have a perfectly good battery?

I've update my hdd from my macbook pro 13" mid 2010 to an ssd. I've done a fresh install and imported all my apps and settings from my old hdd. Since that time I have 2 problems: when my mbp goes out of battery it shut down instead of hibernating and when I turn it on my finder is indexing my home folder! I have hibernate mode set to 3 as normal.
My iMac 27 late 2010 does not shut down when shut down in the normal way. I have to shut down with the push button. I have tried disconnecting all the usb connected hardware still no use. Can any body help.I have OS Lion 10.7.3?
My system has randomly shut down twice now in the last two days. Dual G5 2.3. I checked the console log, which I know very little about, and it said this:
localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122
Two questions-
what's the -122 code mean?
Do you think resetting the PMU would be the solution to this?
I have a 15 inch Macpro running Mac OS X Lion, version 10.7.3. It keeps shutting down without any warning. The screen just goes black and I have to press and hold the power button for a while till a hear a sound to turn the system off. This is happening like, more than 5 times a DAY.
Last night my macbook air turned off without warning and wouldn't turn back on until I tried again this morning. A few weeks ago I had my battery and logic board replaced and since then it the screen has gone blue for a few seconds and then back to normal a few times, (in case this is related at all). Is there something I should do to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Now this didnt always happen but as of lately my unibody macbook runing Lion has been dying without warning that my battery is low. It doesnt even go to sleep, it completely dies.
