MacBook :: System Goes To Sleep At Random Without Warning

May 9, 2008

When I'm working, sometimes it goes to sleep without any warning, also with a full battery. It never happens when the magsafe is connected. I noticed that when I wake the macbook again, in the battery icon (top-right), there is a "X" instead of it's capacity%.. Therefore I blame my battery for the random sleep. (the "X" dissapears almost immediately after waking up)

Here is a copy-and-paste of the console log:
Code:
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel System Wake
9/05/08 16:25:42 kernel Previous Sleep Cause: -60

When I let it go to sleep in a normal way, it says 5 in stead of -60. Does anyone knows the meaning of the -60? Google doesn't..

2011 Macbook Pro Crashing On Sleep (and Other Random Cases)

Jun 12, 2012

I am a proud (albeit frustrated) owner of an early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" with the i7 2.2GHz and the ATI 6750 HD.I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53) with the latest updates as of June 12 2012. I have been a big Macbook fan ever since my 2007 white core2duo macbook, but have been experiencing a problem with the latest beast. My problem is, as the title states, crashing upon sleep. The laptop will randomly crash when in use at times, though I thought that problem was a bit too vague to post about here. However, the crashing on sleep issue pretty specific.Basically, to reproduce my problem, all I have to is let my Mac fall asleep with the lid open. After a couple minutes of being asleep, it will either wake up or stay asleep with the activity light steady and dim. The ratio of crash to not crash seems to be roughly 7 to 3. The only way I have been able to fix the issue is to perform a hard shutdown and reboot. Upon rebooting I get an error report, but I'm not sure if that is related to the crash, or just the fact that I shut the computer down the hard way.

I heard that the 6750s sometimes have issues and crash a lot. Should I take this sucker in before my warranty expires and get it looked at?when I boot into Windows 7 via bootcamp, I semi-frequently get a crash when the screen looks fuzzy for a split second right before it reboots. This happens randomly, although I have noticed it happening sometimes when closing a 3D intense program (read: game). But it has never crashed during the 3D intensity. This is only a post-script becuase it could just be the fact that I'm using Windows on a Mac that is causing it to fuss.

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Shutdown Without Warning - General System Error

Apr 23, 2010

I've had my MBP since Oct of 2007. About 2 weeks ago it would not turn on so I had the logic board replaced. After I got it back it would randomly shut down, the only solution I could do is take out the battery and work at the lower clockspeed but it still shut down without warning, just less frequently. I thought it might be the power cord or the battery so I got those replaced but it is still happening. The first day I had the battery (yesterday) it worked fine, no random shutdowns, I calibrated the battery per apple instructions and today it worked great (during charge up and plugged in at full charge) for about 5 hours, then it shut down, I turned it back on and it shut down shortly after, I reset the SMC by taking out the battery and holding down the power button and putting it back in and it shut down again.

Then I tried to run the hardware test and it shut down again so now I am posting this out of frustration. I also reset the pram and it shut down again. Now it won't stay on for more than getting through the login screen. I don't have applecare but they replaced the logic board for no cost (which I don't fully understand), I'd rather not take it back but I will if you guys have no ideas. I looked up (with difficulty) the previous shutdown code: -2 (http://www.macwizard.com/errors.html) and it said it was a "General System Error (VBL Mgr, Queue) -2 vTypErr invalid queue element" but I have no idea what that means.

Mac Pro :: Random Lockups Find In My System

Apr 12, 2009

original 2.66 dual mac pro and for the longest time the mac would randomly lock. It would be on for a couple of days and just lock, sometimes it would be a few weeks. I checked the console and did not see anything as to why, just that the logs stopped.I started by taking out drives (have 3 drives) which did nothing, then i started with the ram. I've got 2gigs of apple ram (4x512s) and 2x2gb of non apple ram. I first removed a gig of the apple ram (2x512) and noticed from multiple weeks it doubled the time i would see lock ups (could be a coincidence). I finally removed the last 2 sticks of apple ram and my machine hasn't locked up since.

Software :: System Not Exiting Sleep Mode / Kicks Back Into Sleep Mode

Dec 29, 2009

As of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.

The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.

How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.

MacBook :: System Not Go To Sleep Mode Immediately

Dec 11, 2009

My MacBook does not sleep immediately, I have already tried removing safe sleep and it gives me no effect. It is not a hardware problem as my Windows Vista on the Machine sleeps just how I would like it. For info, the Hard Drive that is in it (320GB WD Scorpio Black) was used in an EFI Hackintosh install for my MSI Wind (but EFI installs do not modify the main operating system so I do not know what the heck is causing this)? By the way, the MacBook is custom, made by me. I built it out of three dead MacBooks.

One Black Core duo which was stepped on and had a broken screen and hinges which gave me:
Only working Logic board of the Pack (2.0GHZ Core Duo) I paid 140$ for this one
2 512MB sticks (Removed one and added a 1GB Stick, yes I know matched pairs, gonna find another 1GB soon)
Bottom case.
Top lid
Half the keys for the keyboard.

The Second MacBook Free:
2.0GHZ Core Duo white gave me with coffee spilled on it
Top case with trackpad, and half of the keys
Bezel
Hinges
Screen
other screws etc.
Fan (The one inside was going clack clack clack)

One 2.2GHZ Core 2 Duo which a dog peed on, Free for getting data off of:
DVD-R Drive one that was in it wouldn't eject
Sleep Light, the one that was there originally was borked and did not light, and IR did not work. Now it does
alternative screen with no pressure marks like the one I have now but one noticeable 1/2 inch scratch.
Various screws.

I am yet to finish it. I am still prototyping the new top screen assembly using the Black lid, a red apple, and the screen with a scratch on it, and the bezel from the 2.2GHZ which is really beat up. The current top assembly is straight from the 2.0GHZ White. Here's a pic of it in it's current state.

MacBook Pro :: Screen Washed Out Of Unibody When System Put Into And Woken From Sleep

Jan 2, 2009

if anyone else is having problems with their unibody Macbook pro screen getting washed out after a while - especially if the computer has been put into and woken from sleep. I run a 24 inch dell monitor along side my MBP in dual monitor mode, the MBP the slave monitor, with the Dell the main monitor. After a while of use, approx 2 hours, the macbook pro screen fades out/appears washed out. It seems to settle after either a restart or dimming the MBP screen to black for a few minutes. My MBP is not on a cooling stand but I'm going to get one Is this a heat thing, a firmware thing or a defective hardware? I'm running 10.5.6 and have updated the firmware/efi as per apple updates.

It didn't work. So I kept clicking. clicking. clicking. Nothing.

So I slept my mac, and woke it again and it worked.

However when I went to wake it, I just got a grey screen. I held down the power button to cold boot, and when I rebooted it booted from the RAM file like it would normally when waking from deep sleep.

But now every-time I close the laptop it goes into deep sleep.

OS X :: Front Row System Shutdown / Sleep

Jun 12, 2006

I am new to macs just got my first intel dua 20" iMac 3 months back and added a macbook pro last week. My questions is...Is there a way to shutdown or turn off the computer (iMac) with the Front Row remote either in front row or while back at the desktop. I keep my iMac in my bedroom and it serves as the computer as well as the dvd player/pvr/satellite receiver and I would love to be able to watch the directv or dvd and turn off the system without getting out of bed using the remote. It seems that Apple could ad a little icon at the bottom of the front row screen with a shutdown option or if someone created a small app that ran in the background so when you came to the desktop you could use the remote to shutdown the system.

IMac :: System Slow After Screensaver Or Sleep

Dec 19, 2009

My new i5 iMac has been really slow after I get out of its screensaver or take it out of sleep. Even if its on the screensaver for a minute, moving the mouse causes it to freeze and try to load the desktop. This takes about a minute before my computer is fully functional again. Also, I don't know if this is just me thinking this or if its actually a problem, but the computer seems a lot slower than my previous, a 24" 3.06Ghz iMac.

Another thing, the fans seem to spin a lot more with this computer. Watching a YouTube or Hulu video makes the fans spin a ton. I've never had that happen with a Mac before. The computer also gets literally too hot to touch. Anybody else have this?

Also, on a (kind of) unrelated note, Windows performance with this is horrible. I've tried Windows 7 and Vista, and both run... adequately. The fans also spin a ton in Vista (what I currently have installed due to there being no 27" drivers for 7 yet).

OS X :: System Gets Slow After Sleep Mode / Unresponsive To My Commands?

Sep 8, 2009

Background info:
A few weeks ago I upgraded from a regular macbook to a brand new macbook pro 2.66 ghz. I replaced the hard drive right away with a 500gb one (had it done by apple). So my machine runs snow leopard now, I used the data transfer mode to basicly copy the data and apps from my old macbook to the new MBP.

The "problem"
It all worked fine and smooth until a week ago ...For a week now I have a problem that really concerns me. Whenever I open my laptop from a sleep mode he gets really slow and unresponsive to my commands. Its like its crashing, all I can do to get out of this is a hard reboot.

However .. during a reboot OR a cold bootup the MBP gets stuck in the grey screen with only the apple logo .. after a minute or 3 it will start loading but it will never reach the login screen... The strange thing is that when I do reboot it over and over again .. it eventually will boot normally and when it does the MBP runs fine .. until I turn it off or put it in sleep mode .. then the nightmare will start again.

What I have done

I personally suspects the Hard Drive to be the culprit, I get the feeling that the Hard Drive is having trouble starting up or getting out of sleep mode. I am not sure tough.
I have done the following:

- Disc Utility (gives no errors)
- Booting up in terminal and run Disc Utility there (repaired a volume issue)

Could this be a leopard issue? I actually can't remember if this issue happened after the last macOS update or not ..I never had a problem with my iBook and Macbook so I have little experience on troubleshooting. So I hope you more technical experienced users can give me some tips on what to do here.
