PowerPC :: IMac G4 Display - Dies And Goes Glorious Multi Coloured Pattern
Feb 1, 2007
I have just bought an iMac G4 1GHz USB 2.0. When I run the system for more than about 15 mins the screen dies and goes a glorious multi coloured pattern that I cannot recover from. This is persistant from then on through reboots until I Zap the PRAM.
We are using MacMail for a pretty important area and, for reasons we cannot fathom, the 'loading' wheel continues to display (not the multi-coloured spinner) and yet we know that there is nothing to download.
Whenever I try to start up my mac book pro I get coloured lines going down the screen. It then just shows me a large image of the power button with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button" I then do this and the same happens again and I go no further.
I recently made the switch to Mac and I'm very pleased so far with my purchase. The little problem I have is lately while surfing the net, sometimes after the page has loaded the cursor turns to a multi-coloured ball and I can't do anything until it's stopped. Is this the norm? as I'm sure it never happened in the first few weeks of ownership.
Am getting a gray snowflake pattern on display screen (using older Mac pro). Did something fail in computer or is this a hacking job? Right now I'm using another MAC to send this.
I own a 17" g5 imac and today I was just browsing on Firefox and all of a sudden the screen became checkered with thin pink and white lines. It is most noticeable on the menu bar and anything that is grey or white in color. It is not checkered on the blue background behind my desktop photo. I have an external monitor plugged in as well and the same thing is happening to that monitor.
I have a powerPC imac G5 OSX 10.5.8 1.5GB DDR RAM ATI Radeon 9600
Here is a screen shot: Haven't reformatted it yet. Hope there is a better solution. Purchased it used about a year ago. No warranty.
Every few weeks my iMac will suddenly freeze, the screen going black or white or pink etc. The only way I can get the computer back is to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. Then after a restart everything is OK for a few more weeks. Usually it occurs when I am on the internet. I click on something and suddenly the computer is frozen. I am on OS X 10.6.8 and usually use Safari. Ironically when I opened this forum 5 minutes ago there was a similar sounding problem at the top of the list!
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), FCE 4 + FCS 3 . . . Little Knowledge, Many Opinions.
Under 10.6.8, it has been my habit (and pleasure) to open very wide terminal windows across as many as three displays in order to see the results of somewhat wide database queries without text wrapping, which affects readability and cuts the number of lines visible on the display window at once.
Under 10.9.3, when I adjust a window over towards another display so that the window would be on both displays, the window is "ghosted" until I let go of the drag bar, and if the move has not fully adjusted the window to land entirely on the display it is moving into, that half of the window promptly disappears.
Am I missing something about window positioning under Mavericks? Or, is there any way to regain the previous, multi-display-friendly window handling in Mavericks?
I've installed a Mac Mini (unibody) on a friend's boat and have the display output through the HDMI port througha distribution amp to 3 TVs. I have been having resolution difficulties though. When the display is output this way (split three ways) the resolution does not fit the displays, and there is no means to change it to a setting where it will fit the TVs. All TVs are full-HD and 1080p. The screen expands outside of the viewable area.
I have an old iMac G4 and I was wondering if I could just use the screen somehow since I don't need to use it as a computer? Could I use it like a TV to play xbox or something?
Can someone confirm if an Imac G5 will display on a second screen from startup or does the OSX have to complete the boot process before the second display will work.
've been a PC person since forever but more and more I've come in need of a mac, mainly for editing and the use of Final Cut Pro and After Effects. My PC has served me well but was slowing and so when I saw a cheap G5 for sale I snapped it up. Now I'm aware it's the older PowerPC style and it doesn't support the latest and greatest apps but FCP 6 will do me fine. However I have some hardware setup questions I can't seem to find a simple answer to anywhere so I turn to you for.
My G5 came with a rather nice 23' HD Cinema display that I'm currently using, however in my old PC setup I used 3 monitors, 2 identical ones and a TV via DVI-HDMI so I could edit over the two windows and monitor my work on the telly.
If I have an event, starting on Friday, going on Saturday and and finishing Sunday, is it not possible to get this to show in the month view? I know it shows up in the weekly view, but it would be more helpful for me to have it up show up like this so I can get an overview of the month's forthcoming events. Or if it, are there any mods/addons etc that can enable this?
I'm thinking of making the jump and making my first Apple computer purchase. Time machine will be a welcome native backup solution, especially since I can do it over the network automatically. However, I've read that Time Machine naturally requires HFS+ formatted disks. But I will still have my Win7 laptop for gaming purposes, and of course that requires NTFS or FAT32 for writability. My question: Can I just take a TM compatible external drive, split it into two partitions, and then specify that each computer backup onto its own partition with its own file system?
I replaced my iMac G4/800 17" hard drive that was failing (S.M.A.R.T. status) tonight. Textbook operation, following directions from xlr8yourmac.com. No problems at all. I pre-built the drive with Tiger 4.10 in an external case (using the iMac as host) and transferred everything to the drive and tested. I booted off the external drive for a few days for testing. Again, no problems.
I got the iMac back together and booted up. Everything sounds fine but the monitor is black. It's as if there's no power to it or perhaps the lamps were just out.
When I press the power key for 1-2 seconds, the mac goes to sleep and the white Sleep Light on the front of the monitor comes on, so the monitor would appear to be getting power.
The Mac is working, evidently, as the chime for new mail sounded and the new drive chirps a little (very quiet though, btw).
I do NOT have a second monitor to hook to the VGA port, unfortunately.
On one reboot there was a sine-wave 'bong' sound, but the Mac proceeded to boot. I shut down again after that, took the housing apart and checked for trouble. Nothing. The video cable and connector is fine. There are no cables pinched or cut that I can see. And I did ever-so-carefully align the two halves when reassembling.
On the third boot I got the normal Mac chime (no bong/gong) and it booted fine - with no video.
One side note that I expect to be un-related: I left the HD jumper in cable-select mode, as the drive that was in there was also set on cable select (was a Western Digital 250GB drive; the new drive is a Maxtor).
As the title says, I need a new monitor for my old G5 as the old monitor for it went bust. Apple does not make the old displays that came with the unit anymore and the only available monitor is the new LED ones ? but they all come with mini display ports
For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.
I am looking for a display to use with my Powerbook G4 12". I am in love with the 30" cinema display, but according to technical support today, my setup is not compatible (supposedly, but the person on the phone didn't sound to sure). I have a mini DVI, but the 30" requires a dual DVI. I think the 23" display requires DVI, which I can attain with an adapter. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can use with my computer? The bigger the better for me. Also what do you think of the older (plastic case) apple displays?
I've been having this problem for the last few weeks intermittently, and occurs whenever I bring my Macbook Pro (17 5,2 10.6.4) awake from sleep, or sometimes just when I switch it on.
It is a bit difficult to describe, so here is a picture:

I have to hard-reset the laptop to fix this each time...
Do I need to send it away for repairs or is this something that I could fix myself?
I have often been amazed by the speed and accuracy of Searching for Files on my MacBookPro.
As powerful as this SEARCH facility is, recently I wanted to search for a file that I knew had a RED tag assigned to it.
I couldnt find how to do that, it sounds so simple, but, as far as I can see, it cannot be done !!!
I would have thought that it should be easy to do, it is quite an important and useful thing to do, to be able to add coloured TAGS to files, so why can't I search for them, by colour ?
Info: OS X Mavericks (10.9), iPhone 5S, wife has iPad2 and my 4S
When i want to use mp with simple task . eg. iTunes , web browsing , e-mail If i select 1CPU or 4CPU option. Can it reduce my Mac pro power consumption.
no matter what kind of screenshot i take (shift+control+command+3, shift+command+3, shift+control+command+4 or shift+command+4) it always results in this pattern
