MacBook :: Best Way To Ensure Migration Between Macs?
Feb 26, 2009
Right now I have a late 2006 MacBook (C2D) and I am planning on getting a new unibody MacBook in the near future. While using my actual MacBook I replaced the hard disk by a 320 GB Samsung Spinpoint. Of course, I want to have that little friend in the new unibody MacBook. What is the best way to ensure the migration? Just put it in and restart? Or are the any hooks? I hope I could avoid any copying to a third computer, switching hard disks and copying back.
I got a MacBook Air a few months ago and finally got around to migrating data from my MacBook Pro. I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I used a Time Machine backup from an external HD for the migration. Is there any way to undo the migration?
I have set up an iCloud account, moved photos to iPhoto, etc. but i don't see any storage being used for my photos, iTunes music, etc. in my iCloud account. How do I ensure my data is uploaded?
I was at the genius bar today because my mac was really sluggish. We discovered after lots of exploration that my trash appeared to be performing exactly correctly but in fact there were 900 files in there that had never actually been deleted. This created a disconnect between the trash and the system so it was slowing performance significantly.
So right now my current configuration features a 1TB Maxtor Central Axis which houses my iTunes library for streaming to my various computers, devices, PS3, and television. In addition I have a 1TB LaCie hard drive that I use to general backups. I have been considering setting up some sort of RAID configuration to ensure data redundancy while also being able to use the same set up work as a streaming NAS server to my other components. I know Drobo makes a product but it's rather expensive given it's specs.
I want a list of all my non system files to put into a text document. I use the command "ls * -r" in terminal to get the list. However it does not seem complete. I need assurance all volumes are there before I transfer to a text document.
I have one imac (running leopard) and an oldish macbook (also leopard) which can 'see' eachother as soon as the macs are switched on. However my newer macbook Pro (running snow leopard) can't 'see' the other two. They can find it but it can't find them.
I am considering the new Macboom Pro with Retina display -- but it has no CD/DVD drive. Some programs (e.g. Rosetta stone) require the original CD be in the hard drive for the program to work -- which seems to prohinbit the new (Retina display) Macbook Pro. Does anyone know how to avoid this problem?[Note: I have tried making a disk image mounting that ... but the program refuses to recognise that.
I have an plastic (white) Mac Book with a 500gb hd and a pre-uni-body Mac Book Pro with just a 250gb hd. because of the large number of apps and settings I do not want to start from scratch and called Apple and was told I could just take the hard drive out of the Mac Book and place it in the Mac Book Pro without issue. I would have to run some updates but it would work (and the software on it) would work just fine. Does this sound strange to you.
I have considered buying a 750gb Western Digital drive and starting from scratch and then migrating but I really want to know what you think.
On the Western Digital drive. It's 12.5mm and I know th drive in the Mac Book Pro is 9.5. I have read of user installing this drive without issue. Has anybody here tried this. (the drive is a WD7500KEVT WD Scorpio Blue)
We are transferring files from our old mac to our new and we bought a firewire cable. But we didn't get the option and it just started to do it wirelessly, which appears to be going to take about 12 hours. Does anyone know if you can connect the firewire cable in the middle of it transferring, or should we just wait for it to finish it wirelessly?Â
How do you use time machine for two macs? I have a My Passport for Mac where I backed up my MacBook Air. Now I want to back up my MacBook to the My Passport for Mac.Â
Migration issues with MBA from welcome screen!!! Does not finish keeps searching for information. Apple tech support advised to load OS on again. MBA gets lost loading OS ??
w' issue for no prompt for disc two! This leaves you with partial OS!!! Apple knows it is an problem now. MBA not as tight and tested as my other Apple products.
Oh, how I wish they had fire wire option! I have returned and will wait for issue to settle down. Neat box too many potholes. Have a good time reaching the MBA tech team.
Yesterday I did a migration assistant (MacBook Pro to MacPro)to get a music file from a friends computer and what i think happened is that I migrated his WHOLE system because now my hard drive has 4.3 GB left when before it was virtually empty because I use ext. hard drives. My question is WHERE are all these files because I dont see any new files (not even the music file that I intended on migrating) but my hard drive is filled up. And if possible, can I remove all the files at once since they all came at once?
I recently (a few months ago actually!) got a new unibody 15" macbook pro which I love - when I set it up I migrated from my time-machine backup and it seemed to go pretty seamless - I have since upgraded to snow leopard and all is good with the world. Now my new unibody machine has a 320Gb drive where my old machine was quite small so I was shocked to see that i have already used 220Gb - but looking at the macHD at the root I can the usual, 'library', 'applications', 'system' and 'users' - but also see lots of unusual folders:
"users (from old mac)" - which is 55Gb and last modified before I bought my new unibody - can this be safely deleted now? also there are a few folders which have a little arrow pointing into the folder on the bottom left hand corner - what are they? The specific folders are:
'tmp (from old mac)' 'etc (from old mac)' 'user guides and information'
these are all just 4k on disc so am I assuming they are just shortcuts? Any other tips for free-ing up space in a post-migration mac?
I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from a MacBook Pro circa 2006 to a new 13" MacBook Pro, but I do not see any of the data that should have come (music, photos, fonts etc.)?
I purchased a new Macbook pro( OS Lion) and used migration assistant to migrate my files form (OS Snow Leopard) this worked really well. The only problem is that my office 2011 requires me to key in my product key again. I cant find the disk with the sleeve with the key number on it but the box says it covers two machines at home so I should have no problem. Does any one know how I can find my product key on my snow leopard Mac so I can use office 2011 on my new mac.Â
I have an old 2007 Macbook Pro that the video card died in. I ordered my new laptop and want to transfer the information from the old one to the new one. The migration assistant wants me to run the migration assistant on the old computer, but I can access it because the screen is dead. Hooking it to a monitor wont work either....how is the best way to get my data onto my new MacBook? I have a firewire to quickly transfer the data, just not sure how to get to it.
I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air. It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id. But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.Â
I own an IMac with two users on it, mine and my partners. She recently got a new Macbook and wants to only transfer her user information using Migration Assistant. Is this possible or will it try and migrate both users over?Â
I am migrating from old mac to new, seems it will take a lot of hours before completion. Can I stop it and quit? I plan to do it when going to work in the morning. Does this have any effect on both mac? 70 hours it just too long to wait.
Purchased new MacBook Pro (10.7.8) last night and used Migration Assistant to transfer applications and documents to new mahine from "old" MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. and things did not go as smoothly as anticipated:Â
Applications such as Illustrator, InDesign and Word from old MBP will not open on new MachineÂ
Old User Profile came over but the doc displays question marks where Documents and Downloads should be Old Profile on New MBP does not allow me to change Finder preferneces to display the Hard Drive on the desktopÂ
after migrating from my old macbook pro (leopard) to my new one (lion), there are 2 libraries (one in my Disk folder, the other hidden under my user's folder), 2 application folders -"Disk" w/apps, "user" no apps-, etc. How should it be organized? The library folder that is in my "disk" seems to be the old Library folder... I need to organize this and have all my apps in one folder, all my library files in another...
Migration assistant freezes up with about 2 mins left, will not reconnect to Mac. I have tried 2 times! I'm in the middle of the Inital setup with my MacBook pro.
