MacBook Pro :: Move MB HD To MBP Without Migration

Sep 16, 2009

I have an plastic (white) Mac Book with a 500gb hd and a pre-uni-body Mac Book Pro with just a 250gb hd. because of the large number of apps and settings I do not want to start from scratch and called Apple and was told I could just take the hard drive out of the Mac Book and place it in the Mac Book Pro without issue. I would have to run some updates but it would work (and the software on it) would work just fine.
Does this sound strange to you.

I have considered buying a 750gb Western Digital drive and starting from scratch and then migrating but I really want to know what you think.

On the Western Digital drive. It's 12.5mm and I know th drive in the Mac Book Pro is 9.5. I have read of user installing this drive without issue. Has anybody here tried this. (the drive is a WD7500KEVT WD Scorpio Blue)

OS X :: Migration Assistant To Move All Documents And Settings

Feb 21, 2009

However, before we did that we wanted to make sure all her documents/settings were on the MacBook Pro. So I went ahead and wiped the old MacBook Pro clean and then used Migration assistant from the MacBook to move all of her documents and settings. Needless to say this was the easiest migration I have ever done to a new system. And I am extremely happy that I work in an environment is mostly made up of Macintosh computers. So while all of you here know that Migration Assistant is the best, I am mostly writing this thread for those who do not yet own Macintosh computers

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migration Assistant Didn't Move All Files

Jul 1, 2012

yesterday I moved all my files from my old MacBook Pro running SL to my new MBP 15,4.  I used migration assistant and my time machine backup, that I had updated minutes before.  Now I realized that some folders were not copied. Do you know where I can find a log regarding the moving process, so I can check which files were not moved?

MacBook Air :: Undo Migration With Migration Assistant?

Apr 9, 2012

I got a MacBook Air a few months ago and finally got around to migrating data from my MacBook Pro. I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I used a Time Machine backup from an external HD for the migration. Is there any way to undo the migration?

MacBook :: Best Way To Ensure Migration Between Macs?

Feb 26, 2009

Right now I have a late 2006 MacBook (C2D) and I am planning on getting a new unibody MacBook in the near future. While using my actual MacBook I replaced the hard disk by a 320 GB Samsung Spinpoint. Of course, I want to have that little friend in the new unibody MacBook. What is the best way to ensure the migration? Just put it in and restart? Or are the any hooks? I hope I could avoid any copying to a third computer, switching hard disks and copying back.

OS X :: Migration Assistant MacBook Pro To MacPro

Sep 29, 2009

Yesterday I did a migration assistant (MacBook Pro to MacPro)to get a music file from a friends computer and what i think happened is that I migrated his WHOLE system because now my hard drive has 4.3 GB left when before it was virtually empty because I use ext. hard drives. My question is WHERE are all these files because I dont see any new files (not even the music file that I intended on migrating) but my hard drive is filled up. And if possible, can I remove all the files at once since they all came at once?

MacBook Pro :: Users From Old Mac Folder After Migration

Oct 23, 2009

I recently (a few months ago actually!) got a new unibody 15" macbook pro which I love - when I set it up I migrated from my time-machine backup and it seemed to go pretty seamless - I have since upgraded to snow leopard and all is good with the world. Now my new unibody machine has a 320Gb drive where my old machine was quite small so I was shocked to see that i have already used 220Gb - but looking at the macHD at the root I can the usual, 'library', 'applications', 'system' and 'users' - but also see lots of unusual folders:

"users (from old mac)" - which is 55Gb and last modified before I bought my new unibody - can this be safely deleted now? also there are a few folders which have a little arrow pointing into the folder on the bottom left hand corner - what are they? The specific folders are:

'tmp (from old mac)'
'etc (from old mac)'
'user guides and information'

these are all just 4k on disc so am I assuming they are just shortcuts? Any other tips for free-ing up space in a post-migration mac?

MacBook Air :: Migration Assistant From PC Password?

Feb 19, 2012

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air.  It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id.  But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Open Mail After Migration To New

Just received a new MacBook Pro and used Migration Assistant to transfer everything over from the old MBP to the new one.

Everything worked fine - except for Mail, which won't open.

I just get this message:

"Mail can’t open because you don’t have the necessary permissions to change the folder where it saves information.Mail stores information in /Macintosh HD/Users/howardburch/Library/Mail. If this folder is on your computer, use the Get Info window in the Finder to change your permissions for this folder to “Read & Write.” If this folder is located on a network server, contact the server administrator. Mac Pro :: Configuring With MacBook Pro Migration And Windows XP Bootcamp?

Nov 3, 2010

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (early 2009 Quad Core" 2.66 (2009/Nehalem), and a second (1GB) internal hard drive. I would like to transfer my the applications, files, and profile from my Macbook Pro (early 2008 Core 2 Duo" 2.5) to the Mac Pro. I also want to install with Boot Camp Windows XP Pro (SP3) on a separate hard drive. I want the XP drive to be the 640 GB hard drive that came with the Mac Pro, and the MacOS drive to be the added 1GB hard drive. I want the Windows drive to have 4 logical partitions ( C, D, E, and F) with the C, D, and E being NTFS (so they can exceed 32GB) and, F drive being FAT (for read/write compatibility with MacOS). I've been doing a fair amount of reading both on this forum and elsewhere, and think I have good plan to accomplish the setup. But, a lot of what I'm planning to do is new to me. So, before executing my plan, I wanted to get some feedback from the experts on this forum as to whether my plan is a good one, or needs some modification.

MacBook Pro :: Using Migration Assistant Without Screen Display

Dec 6, 2010

I just bought a new MacBook Pro because my other computer pretty much died, in that the screen can no longer be seen. The guy at the store told me it was probably a bad cable running from the computer to the monitor. Anyways, I am trying to get stuff off of my old computer with migration assistant. Right now, I cannot even see if my old computer is logged in, connected to the internet, or anything. In trying to using the network migration assistant, it prompts me to right in a set of numbers to connect with my old computer. How can I do that when I cannot see the screen? Would it work if I bought a cable to connect the two, therefore not requiring me to put in a password or numbers in my old computer?
