I got a MacBook Air a few months ago and finally got around to migrating data from my MacBook Pro. I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I used a Time Machine backup from an external HD for the migration. Is there any way to undo the migration?

i know safari is default cuz its apple and all.. but what do you guys have as a separate option:
Google Chrome
Firefox 3.5
Firefox 4 Beta
Opera
Just safari
just curious.. wanting to put a browser but not too sure. (on my desktop PC, i have firefox 4), but i would like to know
I don't like Firefox 11 one bit and am yearning for 3.6. I read online to drag firefox 11 to trash and that, of course did nothing to actually uninstall. I then dowloaded 3.6 and 'installed' that, restarted but still firefox 11 lives on in my computer.

the Firefox addons on Mozilla's website work on OSX when using Firefox? I just wanted to make sure since I like using all of the apps on my firefox configuration and was thinking about buying a mac. I know a lot of 3rd party apps that aren't specifically made for Mac at times will not work
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an plastic (white) Mac Book with a 500gb hd and a pre-uni-body Mac Book Pro with just a 250gb hd. because of the large number of apps and settings I do not want to start from scratch and called Apple and was told I could just take the hard drive out of the Mac Book and place it in the Mac Book Pro without issue. I would have to run some updates but it would work (and the software on it) would work just fine.
Does this sound strange to you.
I have considered buying a 750gb Western Digital drive and starting from scratch and then migrating but I really want to know what you think.
On the Western Digital drive. It's 12.5mm and I know th drive in the Mac Book Pro is 9.5. I have read of user installing this drive without issue. Has anybody here tried this. (the drive is a WD7500KEVT WD Scorpio Blue)
Migration issues with MBA from welcome screen!!! Does not finish keeps searching for information. Apple tech support advised to load OS on again. MBA gets lost loading OS ??
w' issue for no prompt for disc two! This leaves you with partial OS!!! Apple knows it is an problem now. MBA not as tight and tested as my other Apple products.
Oh, how I wish they had fire wire option! I have returned and will wait for issue to settle down. Neat box too many potholes. Have a good time reaching the MBA tech team.
Right now I have a late 2006 MacBook (C2D) and I am planning on getting a new unibody MacBook in the near future. While using my actual MacBook I replaced the hard disk by a 320 GB Samsung Spinpoint. Of course, I want to have that little friend in the new unibody MacBook. What is the best way to ensure the migration? Just put it in and restart? Or are the any hooks? I hope I could avoid any copying to a third computer, switching hard disks and copying back.
View 14 Replies View RelatedYesterday I did a migration assistant (MacBook Pro to MacPro)to get a music file from a friends computer and what i think happened is that I migrated his WHOLE system because now my hard drive has 4.3 GB left when before it was virtually empty because I use ext. hard drives. My question is WHERE are all these files because I dont see any new files (not even the music file that I intended on migrating) but my hard drive is filled up. And if possible, can I remove all the files at once since they all came at once?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently (a few months ago actually!) got a new unibody 15" macbook pro which I love - when I set it up I migrated from my time-machine backup and it seemed to go pretty seamless - I have since upgraded to snow leopard and all is good with the world. Now my new unibody machine has a 320Gb drive where my old machine was quite small so I was shocked to see that i have already used 220Gb - but looking at the macHD at the root I can the usual, 'library', 'applications', 'system' and 'users' - but also see lots of unusual folders:
"users (from old mac)" - which is 55Gb and last modified before I bought my new unibody - can this be safely deleted now? also there are a few folders which have a little arrow pointing into the folder on the bottom left hand corner - what are they? The specific folders are:
'tmp (from old mac)'
'etc (from old mac)'
'user guides and information'
these are all just 4k on disc so am I assuming they are just shortcuts? Any other tips for free-ing up space in a post-migration mac?
I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from a MacBook Pro circa 2006 to a new 13" MacBook Pro, but I do not see any of the data that should have come (music, photos, fonts etc.)?

I purchased a new Macbook pro( OS Lion) and used migration assistant to migrate my files form (OS Snow Leopard) this worked really well. The only problem is that my office 2011 requires me to key in my product key again. I cant find the disk with the sleeve with the key number on it but the box says it covers two machines at home so I should have no problem. Does any one know how I can find my product key on my snow leopard Mac so I can use office 2011 on my new mac.

I have an old 2007 Macbook Pro that the video card died in. I ordered my new laptop and want to transfer the information from the old one to the new one. The migration assistant wants me to run the migration assistant on the old computer, but I can access it because the screen is dead. Hooking it to a monitor wont work either....how is the best way to get my data onto my new MacBook? I have a firewire to quickly transfer the data, just not sure how to get to it.

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air. It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id. But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.

I own an IMac with two users on it, mine and my partners. She recently got a new Macbook and wants to only transfer her user information using Migration Assistant. Is this possible or will it try and migrate both users over?
I am migrating from old mac to new, seems it will take a lot of hours before completion. Can I stop it and quit? I plan to do it when going to work in the morning. Does this have any effect on both mac? 70 hours it just too long to wait.

after migrating from my old macbook pro (leopard) to my new one (lion), there are 2 libraries (one in my Disk folder, the other hidden under my user's folder), 2 application folders -"Disk" w/apps, "user" no apps-, etc. How should it be organized? The library folder that is in my "disk" seems to be the old Library folder... I need to organize this and have all my apps in one folder, all my library files in another...

I just bought the new MBP with USB 3.0 and once the installation is fresh my USB 3.0 Lacie Minimus HDD connects at a speed of up to 5Gb/s (as in System Report) and disk speed shows transfer at around 73MB/s. However, once I migrate my data from iMac (mid 2011) the new MBP changes the link speed to up to 480 Mb/s and the disk speed drops to 23MB/s.

I am trying to migrate everything from my old macbook pro to my new one over to my new one over firewire. I have tried twice and it starts at 1hr 30min and goes to 50min to 2hrs 30min and then finishes with in 30min total. Once it finished nothing had finished, it transferred the application names, but not the applications, no documents, no pictures, no downloads, nothing except app names transfered.

Just received a new MacBook Pro and used Migration Assistant to transfer everything over from the old MBP to the new one.
Everything worked fine - except for Mail, which won't open.
I just get this message:
"Mail can’t open because you don’t have the necessary permissions to change the folder where it saves information.Mail stores information in /Macintosh HD/Users/howardburch/Library/Mail. If this folder is on your computer, use the Get Info window in the Finder to change your permissions for this folder to “Read & Write.” If this folder is located on a network server, contact the server administrator. After your permissions are changed, open Mail again."
I can't find the Library/Mail folder in my users folder.

I am trying to migrate everything from my MacBook Pro to my brand new iMac but I get as far as searching for other computers and that is it? I am connected by ethernet cable on the same wi fi network, have my MacBook Pro to file sharing and still nothing. I have not updated to Mavericks since I read loads of bad reviews but all my other software is up to date on both computers. I can't belive I didn't migrate when I took the iMac out of the box yesterday thinking it would be "easy" to do it later.

I just purchased a new Mac Pro (early 2009 Quad Core" 2.66 (2009/Nehalem), and a second (1GB) internal hard drive. I would like to transfer my the applications, files, and profile from my Macbook Pro (early 2008 Core 2 Duo" 2.5) to the Mac Pro. I also want to install with Boot Camp Windows XP Pro (SP3) on a separate hard drive. I want the XP drive to be the 640 GB hard drive that came with the Mac Pro, and the MacOS drive to be the added 1GB hard drive. I want the Windows drive to have 4 logical partitions ( C, D, E, and F) with the C, D, and E being NTFS (so they can exceed 32GB) and, F drive being FAT (for read/write compatibility with MacOS). I've been doing a fair amount of reading both on this forum and elsewhere, and think I have good plan to accomplish the setup. But, a lot of what I'm planning to do is new to me. So, before executing my plan, I wanted to get some feedback from the experts on this forum as to whether my plan is a good one, or needs some modification.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new MacBook Pro because my other computer pretty much died, in that the screen can no longer be seen. The guy at the store told me it was probably a bad cable running from the computer to the monitor. Anyways, I am trying to get stuff off of my old computer with migration assistant. Right now, I cannot even see if my old computer is logged in, connected to the internet, or anything. In trying to using the network migration assistant, it prompts me to right in a set of numbers to connect with my old computer. How can I do that when I cannot see the screen? Would it work if I bought a cable to connect the two, therefore not requiring me to put in a password or numbers in my old computer?
View 2 Replies View Related just got a new MacBook a few days ago and have run into a frustrating problem. After powering her up, I downloaded all of the latest updates, upgraded to iLife 09 (it came in the box), and then I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything over from my iMac. This took approximately 4-5 hours to complete. When everything was done, I had two accounts: the one I created when the MacBook was turned on, and a second one that was a clone of the iMac that I had just migrated over. I had only wanted one account on my MacBook, but now there was two. I also didn't like the fact that the original account had iLife 09, but the cloned account had iLife 08.
An hour or two of searching on MacRumors and Apple's website did not turn up a definitive answer, so I deleted the original account and started renaming the cloned account in an attempt to give it a different name. I started having concerns that everything was going to line up properly (root names, etc) so I threw in the towel and am now in the middle of wiping the MacBook clean and reloading Leopard. (I'm also bummed that all of the time I've put into this is down the tubes)
