Hardware :: Setting RAID Configuration To Ensure Data Redundancy

Jul 1, 2009

So right now my current configuration features a 1TB Maxtor Central Axis which houses my iTunes library for streaming to my various computers, devices, PS3, and television. In addition I have a 1TB LaCie hard drive that I use to general backups. I have been considering setting up some sort of RAID configuration to ensure data redundancy while also being able to use the same set up work as a streaming NAS server to my other components. I know Drobo makes a product but it's rather expensive given it's specs.

OS X :: Setting Up Two HDDs In RAID 1 Configuration Possible?

Apr 7, 2009

I have a MBP (see signature) and two Freecom 500GB USB external Hard Discs. Is it possible to somehow set up these two HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration under OS X. The reason for this is that right now I have a large collections of films on the one of the HDD and would hate to loose them all if the disc failed.

Mac Pro :: Setting Up RAID Zero Configuration / Use 3rd Drive For Time Machine Back Up

Sep 25, 2008

Is there any benefit to ordering the MAC Pro Raid card for setting up 2 x 500gig SATA drives in a Raid Zero configuration? Or..Is this accomplished just as well via software in leopard??

Apologies if this is a stupid question - but just wondering if I can save some $ by not having to order the RAID card without giving up anything.

I will use a 3rd 1TB drive for Time machine for back up.

Windows On Mac :: Slows Down And Completely Stops - Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)?

Feb 8, 2009

So after some hard work I finally got windows installed on my mac. I did so because I needed to run a program called 20-20 design for work. About halfway through the install i got this: Error: Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check) Right before this happens the disc kind of slows down and then completely stops. I googled this error and it says more than likely its a bad cd or dvd? Could this be an issue with my new partitioned hard drive?

Mac Pro :: Setting Up RAID 1 Without RAID Card?

May 15, 2009

I have never setup RAID before and this question may be totally stupid for that matter.

Can I setup RAID 1 (or call it mirroring) without the RAID card? I have two 1TB internal drives in my Mac Pro and I want to mirror them. I don't want to spend another 700 bucks just to setup a mirror.

Disk Utility shows some RAID options, but I am not sure how to use them, or if they will work at all without the RAID card.

Mac Pro :: Bootable RAID 1 Mirror Configuration?

Sep 28, 2009

Having never set up a RAID config I was hoping I could get a little confirmation on setting up. Firstly, all data will be backed up using a NAS (maybe a time capsule), so at the moment I am just looking to mirror the primary drive of a Power Mac G5 incase of hardware faults.

The G5 is acting as a server and I therefore want to arrive at a situation that if a drive fails, the machine will still boot perfectly from one of the redundant disks (and of course notify the user to the failure), i.e. a bootable RAID 1 configurationAs I understand it, I can only achieve this using a dedicated RAID controller (i.e. this can't be done via a software raid)? Is this the case?

Mac Mini :: Raid 1 Configuration Play Nice With Boot Camp?

Mar 8, 2010

I've been looking at the Mac Mini server for my next computer purchase, but I've had a few things confuse about the set up. I've seen at least one thread where someone got their Mini server to use RAID 1 settings on the dual internal drive set up.

What I want to know is will a RAID 1 configuration play nice with Boot Camp?

Is it even possible to use boot camp on a RAID 1 configuration?and if it is possible, would the RAID 1 duplicate the Bootcamp Partition too?

These are three important questions because I like the idea of the RAID 1 security and because I'll be pairing it with a Blu-ray drive I'd most likely have to install Windows via Boot Camp to watch them.

PowerPC :: Setting Up A RAID On G4 / Don't Have Original Install Disc

Nov 20, 2008

I wonder if anyone can give me the basic steps to setting up a RAID array on a Powermac G4 (I think I mean a Raid 0 ie one extra hard drive).I have looked up a couple of articles but they advise to use the original install disc during the set up process. Unfortunately I don't have the original install disc. I have available one extra internal hard drive and one external hard drive.

I would like to set it up so that there are two internal hard drives with one replicating to the other one.

OS X :: Setting Up Mac Mini With A Raid Cabinet / Run ITunes From Same Library?

Nov 4, 2009

I'm using a Mac Mini (C2D 2.0 + 2GB Ram + 10.6.1) as a server with a Raid cabinet connected to it on the fire-wire port.I then add the Raid disk to my startup items on my Mac pro so i can access everything on the raid disk.

I also run the program ShareTool on the mini so i can access files and music from work, i have iTunes running on the mini so it automatically shows up as a shared library at work.

I feel i loose connection to the server if i don't use it for a few min and it even pauses between playing songs in iTunes or when i try changing album. When i click the mini it mostly shows i'm not connected and i have to wait for it to reconnect or click "connect as" to redo it.My questions are:

1. Is there a better way to run a Mini + connected Raid disk so it will stay connected?

2. I have my iTunes library on the Raid disk and add music from my Mac pro but also have ot run iTunes from the same library on the Mini so i can access it from work over VPN, is there a better way to do this so i don't have to copy the actual library from MP to Mini each time i change it?

Hardware :: Data On RAID 1 Get Corrupted - Need To Reformat

Jun 24, 2009

Ever since I got this 2TB external (Maxtor Onetouch III RAID 1) I've had it running in it's default RAID 0 set up and it's been fine, however, recently Leopard's been finicky about loading it. (every so often it seems that the data has been corrupted and I have to reformat). I have the equivalent amount of space on other external discs so I haven't lost anything truly important. So that's the situation, here's what I have been thinking about.

I've been thinking of trying to set it up to be RAID 1 so that I can pinpoint whether one of the drives inside if failing or whether I should just try to call Seagate and see if the drive is still under warranty. Does anyone here know the best way to set up this drive to RAID 1? I know I can set up RAID arrays via Disk Utility, but I can't get DU to recognize each drive separately. (setting it to have 2 partitions of equal size doesn't work either, it comes back as RAID failed)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migrate Data To A New RAID Setup?

May 6, 2012

I've been trying to migrate data to a new RAID setup, but have been running into the error code 36 issue where Mac created invisible files are killing the file transfers. At any rate, I tried about three different directory cleanup utilities and for the most part got almost all the data to move. Now I'm onto the last bit which was giving me permissions errors as well.I used Batchmod to make everything read write and I ALSO CLEARED THE XTARS. Worked like a charm and everthing transfered. HOWEVER. Killing the extened attributes of the files turned them all into Executible files with no program ownership. BTW, there are font files so there are hundreds of them. Is there anyway to re-assign them or get some of the attributes back?

Kind of like how Time Machine or Drop Box works. It just senses changed files and overwrites those, but doesn't recopy unchanged files.

Mac Pro :: Home Folder On RAID Array And Data On Drives

Aug 12, 2009

I have two choices.
1. Apple's Mac Pro RAID Controller, Four Drives, RAID 0+1. One big disk, highest cost.
2. Or, some other RAID Controller (?), Three matching drives, RAID 5. Then, 1 big drive for OS/Applications/Time Machine.

I'd probably move my Home folder to the RAID Array and have just my data striping amongst those drives. Has anyone had a dilemma like this before? I like the idea of hardware separation of my Home folder from the OS.

I've got a 2TB external drive with about 1.5TB of movies, Music etc. I've got another identical empty drive that I want to keep a backup of the first drive on. So my question is what is the best way of backing up this data? I thought of using disk utility(I'm running snow leopard 10.6.4 if that makes any difference) to created a mirrored RAID set. If I plug in the empty drive then create the RAID set will my first drive get wiped when the set is created? or with it leave the data on the first drive intact? Or should I just use something like crashplan to backup to the 2nd drive?
