MacBook Air :: Using Parallels 2.5 / BBC IPlayer?

Jun 15, 2008

I'm considering purchasing a MacBook Air and would like to know if anyone out there is happily running Parallels 2.5 (Build 3214) on their Air. Up to now that version of Parallels has done everything I needed so I saw no need to upgrade the software.

Also are there any UK owners who can report their experiences using the BBC iPlayer (in OS X) on the MBA.

Windows On Mac :: Using BBC IPlayer And Channel 4OD?

I am about to plunge into the Mac world - can't wait and just want to know if I will be missing out on anything. At the moment I use BBC iPlayer and Channel 4OD a lot on my PC. I know that these do not wok on a Mac due to DRM issues, but I am hoping that they will work on a Mac if I run Vista and Parallels. Has anyone tried this?

Safari :: Embedded BBC IPlayer Not Running

I've got an ongoing issue with the embedded BBC iPlayer on my iMac. For a while now all I get is the loading screen but no video. The iPlayer itself is fine as is any other Flash content but the embedded news articles don't work. I've tried uninstalling Flash and re-installing as described elsewhere on this site but to no avail. I have the latest Flashplayer installed and it's the version recommended by Adobe.

I have:

Safari :: BBC IPlayer - This Content Doesn't Seem To Be Working

May 30, 2012

When I log into my user and go on the BBC iPlayer website and click on any video, it loads perfectly fine. However, when my mum logs onto her user account she cant play any videos. The message that comes up for ANY video is 'This content doesnt seem to be working. Try again later' This message never shows up on my side of the computer. We have an iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM,Mac OS X Lion Version 10.7.4, The newest version of Flash installed (obviously because it works on my side)The newest version of Safari installed  I have tried removing Flash from the computer then reinstaling it. I also tried repairing disk permissions through Disk Utility. I even tried deleting the Safari preferences in Library. I tried reinstalling Safari I tried installing 'click to flash' to see if it would convert it to HTML5 but that didnt work. So I deleted the extension. It will load fine in Chrome & Firefox. So we can assume with this that its a problem with my mums Safari.

IMac :: Cannot Watch IPlayer Video - Stalls At Beginning

Sep 10, 2009

I've just bought my first mac and loving it except one major problem. I'm using it as a media centre to play music, photos, movies etc and most importantly to watch catch up tv. Unfortunately I can't watch bbc iplayer, itv or channel four on demand. Each time I load a video it simply stalls at the beginning (except itv which just rotates through adverts). Now, I'm sure you need some info. I've installed the latest version of flash and it seems to be working, I'm using safari and this is a mac os x 10.5.8. I've been trying to fix it for over 3 hours now and I'm losing the lot.

Windows On Mac :: Parallels 3 To Parallels 4 - Data Stays Intact?

Aug 29, 2009

I have Parallels 3 installed, mostly to run MS Money. Last night I installed Snow Leopard, unaware that Parallels 3 is not compatible. It appears that I need to go out and buy Parallels 4 as that will work with Snow Leopard.

My question is will all my data within Windows remain if I install 4 or will it be a completely new Windows? And if so, how do I go in and retrieve my MS Money data as I can no longer access it with Parallels 3.

MacBook :: MB 2,1 Using Parallels -- 4GB RAM OK

Nov 13, 2010

I've got a 2,1, 2.0 GHz MB with 2GB RAM, and I'm thinking about adding more RAM. I believe the limit my machine can address is 3.0 GB, but I found a set of benchmarks that gave dramatic improvements with 4GB on a test running Photoshop CS3 and Parallels: http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Ma...ory_Benchmarks

I'm just wondering why this is? If there is a virtual machine does it evade the 3GB limit, and if so, if I'm doing a lot of work in Windows on Parallels would it be worth going for the extra GB?

MacBook Pro :: Best Way To Run Windows 7 And Parallels

Apr 21, 2010

I'm really confused about the best way for running W7 through Paralles 5. All I need to run on windows is a forex trading platform. I've read that you get better performance if you install the virtual machine onto a separate disk. So I'm wondering is it even possible to install windows through bootcamp + parallels onto an Express Card SSD and run it off of that?

Or would I be best just installing it all onto the local disk drive using a separate partition for bootcamp? I'm new to running virtual machines so don't really know how it all works or the best route to go. I'm trying to decide between 13" macbook pro using separate partition on disk or a MBP with express card slot. Also, I'm assuming the SD Card is too slow for this?

MacBook Pro :: Set Up Parallels And Bootcamp?

Apr 21, 2010

I am merely hours away from making my first mac purchase! I have settled on the 15" 2.4 i5. This should be more than enough computing power for my needs in the next 3-4 years. However I was wondering if I will be able set up parallels 5 AND bootcamp and just choose when to use one or the other? If I am able to do this, would anyone recommend it?

My thinking is that, many of my windows programs are not very demanding(rosetta stone, ms office, etc...) and it would be more convenient to switch back and forth using parallels. Boot camp, from what I've read on a few previous threads, would be more suited for some casual gaming or more demanding tasks(engineering program/reservoir modeling program) on windows. So what do you recommend? Bootcamp, parallels, or both(if this works)? On a side note: is purchasing from Ebay with 8% cashback from bing the best deal going for the base 15"?

I've just got a 13" 1.86GHz with 4GB RAM. I'm wondering which is the best option to go with. I've been using VMWare up until now as my Hackintosh does not support intel-VTx or whatever. I think parallels looks much better, but don't know how it is with performance. So does anyone have experience using both on their machine and can recommend either one? I'm looking for best performance mostly as I run in single window and not Unity.

MacBook :: Adding Windows Through Parallels?

May 19, 2009

I have a Mac, which I love deal, but the evil people at the MBA program I will be attending next year are dead set on me having a PC (They have a "special deal with Dell" that isn't a deal). The compromise is that I can just add Windows to my Mac. I know that this is possible through Parallel, but am really concerned about performance issues and viruses. I have the entry level computer, not the Pro, so I'm very concerned about this proposition. I'm hoping to fight them on this issue, so I'm really looking for your adding Windows to an entry level Mac horror stories.

MacBook Pro :: Running Both Parallels And BootCamp?

Jul 11, 2009

Do I have to install a Windows 7/RC build on Bootcamp before I can use it with Parallels? Or if I already have it on bootcamp, I have to install it all over again with Parallels? And I was thinking of only having RC as my secondary OS until my Windows 7 disc comes. When that happens, do I just delete all my RC stuff from bootcamp to make room for Windows 7? I'd also lose all my documents and whatnot right since I can't upgrade to Windows 7 from an RC.

MacBook Air :: VirtualBox Over Parallels / Fusion

Nov 8, 2009

I'm a MBA Rev. A user (first day 1.8/SSD). I recently upgraded the stock SSD with a Photofast 128GB model for more space. Both before the SSD upgrade, and more noticeably after, my Windows XP virtual machine seemed to run poorly: fequent "pauses" and generally really slowly. At that time I was using Fusion; I decided to give Parallels a try. Slightly lower RAM footprint, but still slow. I found that disabling the shared folder feature helped somewhat; adding the NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate registry key also helped somewhat.

Still frustrated, I tried Fusion 3; that didn't help. Then Parallels 5 came out, and I had missed the free upgrade cutoff by 3 weeks. Even more frustrated, I decided to try VirtualBox. Oh, my. It installs easily. It does everything I need. It runs smoothly (no pauses, good speed in the VM). It's FREE. Bonuses: the RAM footprint is even smaller; the hard drive container file seems smaller (even with exactly the same contents inside the VM). The only downside is a lack of "coherence" or "unity" mode, which I never liked anyway.

I am a rock-solid convert to VirtualBox, and highly recommend it over the commercial products for running a Windows XP virtual environment (I have not tried Windows 7, nor will I; with only 2GB of real RAM in an MBA I cannot imagine that will go over well).
