Mar 17, 2012my macbook air does not connect to the internet via ethernet anymore. I have changed cables etc but nothing. Wireless is fine.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Connect To Internet Via Ethernet Or Wi-fi / Internet Connects In Safe-mode
Jan 1, 2010I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Oct 12, 2010I'm here at university and the wifi here sucks! it is so slow, it is working.However there is an ethernet port and I did connect to it this morning. But, this evening I tried connecting again and it wouldnt let me!At my university they require you to put in your student ID and pw in order for you to use the internet for both wi-fi and ethernet. But when i tried this evening it dint ask for my student ID or password. I went to settings and it did say that there was a connection and that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet"
i dont understand how come now it isnt working. I aksed my classmate nextdoor if his internet port was working through the ethernet port he said it was.... i am not that tech savy so keep vocabulary to something simple lmaooo.

Oct 1, 2009I'm brand new to Mac. I just got a MacBook Pro, and I've been having some troubles connecting to the internet at home. I have a LinkSys WRT54GS router with Firmware Version: v1.50.9. I'm unable to access the internet through both ethernet and wireless. Concerning wireless, I have tried connecting using WEP, and have tried entering passcodes both with and without an "$" and "0x" preceding the 10 digit WEP passcode. I have also tried switching the encryption over to WPA2, and still nothing. I have even disabled the security to see if it's able to connect -- it's not. I had some error regarding not being able to find it's IP or something along those lines.

I have a more recent Mac Book and I just plugged in the ethernet cable to it, clicked the setting in Network settings, and I was connected.Â
On the iMac it keeps saying, diagnostics can't fix it etc..?
On the left panel in Diagnostics, Ethernet has a green light, Network Settings an orange light, and ISP a green light (internet and Server are Red).
I'm using Comcast cable, and they just say the settings should appear automatically on a Mac (which they apparently did on my Mac Book!)Â ...

Apr 29, 2010I can't seem to connect to the internet using my ethernet cable. I messed around with some of the ethernet settings but now forgot what was the default one. The strange thing is, when I go into windows mode, the ethernet cable works. its just in Mac OS mode it doesn't.

Jun 8, 2010My father in law had a power failure at the house, and since then, he cannot connect to the internet via DSL Modem connected via ethernet cable. Being that he is 1000 miles away, I am trying to diagnose via phone. System Info: Imac 17", purchased new around 2006- Intel chip, running Tiger OS
Symptoms:
- Cannot connect via ethernet
- When searching system profiler, "Built-in Ethernet" shows up, but no MAC address
- In Network settings, he can see the various connection ports, but cannot check the box on "Built-in Ethernet" to turn the port on... won't let him.
- Wireless is not an option, I don't want to be 24/7 tech support
Diagnosis? I am thinking that the power surge may have fried the ethernet port on the motherboard.
Repair Solution: Planning on picking up the Apple USB Ethernet adapter. I know it doesn't have the correct drivers to run on Tiger, but found a driver online that claims it allows use of the usb adapter on Panther on up.
Questions - Does this sound like a fried ethernet port? Any other easy diagnostic tests I can do? Does the USB adapter sounds like a decent solution?

Apr 6, 2012i can't connect to the internet via my ethernet cable, but this is a weird case. What's weird about it is that all my settings are O.K. (appletalk on and set to ethernet, tcp/ip set to ethernet, dhcp) and my iMac is recieving a 192 address, but it still can't connect to the internet. The dhcp settings are correct, because they are the same settings used on all my other devices (at least those that use internet anyway), and they all connect to the internet just fine. Whether via an ethernet cable, or Wi-Fi.

May 22, 2012For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet.As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

May 10, 2009I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jun 6, 2012I usually have all my computers, mac or pc, connected over Ethernet and only use Wifi for phones and guests. A while ago i started not to be able to connect to the internet anymore, although i hadn't changed anything on the mac or my router. I tired all possible troubleshooting routines to get to the bottom of it but with no success. Reset network ports in System prefs, Cocktail maintenance, Repairing disk and permissions booted from recovery partition, deleted SystemConfig files, reset the router to factory settings and reconfiguring, checked DHCP settings for ip conflicts, just nothing works.
I can connect to the internet over wifi without problems on the Macbook Pro.I can connect over ethernet to all other shared devices and computers on my network.When i run the Network Diagnostics with Ethernet as primary interface all lights are green and it says my connections are working but i cannot connect to any internet address, all pings time out with any port or protocol (ftp, mail, http, ssh)Other PC's and Macs can connect over ethernet to the internet without problems using the same cable.

Dec 27, 2007I have a blackbook (intel core 2 duo) and I can connect to my landlord's wireless network (they have a netgear wgt624) but I can't actually use the web (Safari or Firefox will just "think"). I've tested the diagnostics and it confirms that my mac can connect to the network, but it cannot connect to the internet. The network uses WPA personal and it has a 19-aphanumeric passphrase.
*Also - would it be possible for me to extend the wireless range (and make it possible to browse the web) if I used my own 2wire wireless modem to connect to the netgear wgt624?
OS X :: MacBook Will Not Connect Via Ethernet
Jun 1, 2009So as of mid-day my Macbook will not connect to the internet in our apartment via ethernet. I have tried all my roomates ethernet plug ins and it still does not work. It shows a green light next to ethernet saying it his hooked up but it won't load any pages. I've tried network diagnostics? When I try to go to a webpage it goes to a white screen and after 5min of trying to load it bring up the "not connected to the internet" text. I guess I'll make a trip to the apple store wednesday if at all possible unless you guys come up with something. This machine is out of warranty so I'm wondering what would be the worse case scenario and how much am I looking at spending?

Nov 3, 2009My macbook is not letting internet through from ethernet or airport but when i boot up xp with bootcamp both work so the drivers must be fine, this problem might have something to do with when i turn the computer on it doesnt always start up it go to the gray screen with the spinning loading wheel but also it gets the loading bar which you can see for 30 sec till it gets about 1/32 of the way though the bar so not far at all and sometimes doesnt boot at all. I am running snow leopard and luckily used time mach.

May 28, 2012I'm trying to use my Wi-Fi to surf the internet and the Ethernet to log to my LAN Network. Both networks have access to the inernet through different ISP's and both have Wi-Fi modems. I set up the Wi-Fi as my preferred network followed by the Ehternet connection. That way I can surf the web through the ISP that I want and I can see the other computers on the LAN Network. However, when I try to use any of the Network printers of log to the server I can't connect. Can anyone tell me if I have to set up the connections in any particular way? I'm using Mac OS X Lion on a Macbook Pro 13". The server controlling the LAN is a Windows Server 2008 R2.Â

MacBook Pro :: Sharing LAN Internet To Xbox 360 Via Ethernet Cable?
Mar 11, 2010I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to share my LAN internet to an XBOX 360 using the Apple USB ethernet cable (for the Macbook Air) on my Macbook Pro 13"? I've tried several routers, and all have them have failed me giving me massive timeouts and sudden disconnects. I think this should be a good solution.
