MacBook Air :: Copy Files To A Hard Disk?
Mar 27, 2012
I have to send my Mac Book Air to technical service. They told me they cannot guarantee to save the data in the computer so I should save all my data. I cannot pass all the pictures and files to a hard disk. How do I do this?

I'm using a macbook and would like to copy over several games over to my friend's external harddrive. The files are rather large -8gigs, 6gigs, 4gigs.
For some reason it wont allow me to copy the files to the HD. only prompting me with the message "the operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0)".
I presume that it's formatted correctly because I was able to copy a smaller file (363megs) without any troubles. However, whenever it involves these large torrents it prompts me with that same message.

I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.Â

I added a second harddrive to my Mac Pro. As it happens, it is larger than the primary harddrive. What I would like to do is use the larger harddrive as my Mac OS disk, while using boot camp to set the smaller one up with windows. when I set up the larger one with 10.6, do I have to use the install disks, or can I just copy all of the files from the old disk to the new? Are there any hidden files that I need that might get left behind?

I currently back up onto a 250gb external hard drive using Time Machine. This is now full, so today I purchased a new 1TB drive. I would like to keep all my backups in one place, so would it be possible to copy all my past Time machine backup data/files to my new disk and then start backing up to this in the future. How to do I get Time Machine to see that I have swapped disks when I come to restore files? Will doing this confuse Time Machine?

I am running OSX 10.9.3 on a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 12GB RAM, and itunes 11.2.2 (3) 64 Bit. My itunes library is large (approx 1 TB) and contains mostly ripped CDs, vinyl and ripped DVDs and BluRays. I usually add media using the File/Add to Library command. This set up has been reliable for a couple of years at least.Â
At time of writing itunes will still happily add music files, but is no longer happy to add movie files. I get a message telling me that the disk which contains my itunes library (I use a 2TB external HD) cannot be written to or read from. Clearly this isn't true as I can write music files to it. Â
I tried disk repair in the disk utility and it tells me the drive is healthy. I thought maybe there is a maximum itunes library size. As a check I tried starting a completely new itunes library on a different external drive and the problem persists.Â
I have >500GB spare space on the drive containing my itunes library. All my drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so should not suffer any file size limitation.Â

I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).

I have a 38gb iMovie file on my MacBook. I also have a 160gb external HDD. I want to copy the file across, sounds simple right? It will start copying happily but when it gets to about 8-10gb I get this error message (EVERY TIME!): Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred (Error code -1309). I really do not want to delete this file as it is a wedding video I did for a friend only a few months ago. I am trying to copy across to a Freecom II drive using USB.

My dear baby, a 3 year old macbook pro died last week (way to young). Fried logicboard. Apple wants 1.550 dollars to fix it, so I guess it is gone for good.
My question is, is it possible to take out the harddisk, put it in an external enclosure and plug it in to another mac to get the files?? If so, what enclosure should I buy?It is a summer 2007 macbook pro.

I had downloaded some files to add to an external hard drive, the hard drive was assigned to a pc before adding these files so it wouldn't let me add files from my MacBook..Â
Had a look around online and made some changes (well thats what I thought) and I was able to transfer files form my MacBook onto the external hard drive.Â
What I then figured out was that there was nothing left on the hard drive except for the two file sI just transferred..Â
It turns out I deleted everyting without noticing.
The stpes I followed was to go to disk utility then select the hard drive and click erase (not knowing this would erase evrything).Â
So now I have two files on my hard drive and no idea how to recover the 'delted' files.Â
I tried using Disk Drill, which found the files but then it said I need to buy the full version to recover them.Â
I am wondering if there is any free methods to recover these files at all

The free space on my MacBook is disappearing fast but I don't know why. I am hoping someone can tell me where to start solving this problem. It must be invisible files but what can I do about it? This started after I restored from a Time Machine backup to a new hard disk after the hard disk failed (another story). The Time Machine backup was about a week old (isn't it always the case?) so I don't think it is likely that I could have restored anything that might have had anything to do with the hard disk failure. Everything seemed to be working fine, having spent hours resorting emails and trying to reconstruct files I had lost from the week I didn't back up. During that week I had bought an iPhone. When I connected it to the restored computer it deleted all the apps I had installed. Not a big problem, as I was able to track them down from an iTunes receipt and reinstall them. I then attached my iPod and the computer had to replace all the files with new ones. As there were a lot of songs and photos I left it to do this and went to bed. Next day the iPod now had newly replaced files and seems fine. But there is a warning that the startup disk is full. No new files had been put on the computer, which had about 9.5 Gb free space. I deleted some files so I could do some things with the computer to find out what was happening. The space thus freed soon disappeared. I then deleted Parallels Desktop so that I could free up more space. I now had 29.67 Gb free space. I tried searching for large files but nothing suspicious seems to detectable. By the end of the day the free space had gone down to 24.39 Gb. It now stands at 23.22.

I recently picked up a USB Hard Disk, I plan on copying large files to it (for example 20gb VMs), I am wondering whether or not finder can copy files as large as 20gb one at a time because the last time I tried to do this on a USB Stick, the file transfer would either freeze or would end up taking way too long to transfer and in the end I had to pull it out and having to reformat it. DOes anyone here know if such things will happen again copying these files?

I think I have found a flaw in OSX 10.6.4 file copying..I normall back up my files, by dragging from a folder on my HD to an identical folder on my external HD.The folder I am copying has 86 files in it, but there are only about two dozen new files added since my last back up.I have been telling it by the dialogue box, not to replace identical files in the back up folder, and clicking the check box to apply to all."but when I press the dont copy button, in the copy progress box it says it is copying 86 files. WTF is going on...!@#$%^&*().

I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk. Then I empty the trash. But I don't get more free space on my hard disk! I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.) This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.
PS:MacBook Pro, 10.7.3, very recent model, 500 GB internal hard disk.
Info:iPhone 4S, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

My hard disk is a Raid system. 4x3TB = total 12TB but 3 TB is for backup. So in effect usage space is 9TB. But now used up 7TB (called it original harddisk) I took my iMac to a shop and it dis some verify and tried to repair the disk using Disk Utility. But it cannot repair. Apparently, he said that my hard disk is okay but it has a directory corrupt problem. That is why now my FCPX cannot read all the data. All my media files for FCPX are stored in this 9TB external hard disk. So, I was told the steps to do are:Â
1)Â copy all these 7TB data from Original hard disk into a new hard disk (called it haddisk B).Â
2) Then reformat the old 9TB hard disk (which we earlier called as original hard disk).Â
3) Then I copy back from hard disk B into Original Harddisk 9TBÂ Question is will FCPX be able to recognise again my media files from the Original hard disk in
