OS X :: External Hard Drive Error Code (-50) When Copy The Files
Jan 11, 2011I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).

IMac (Intel) :: Hard Drive And Time Machine Invalid Node Error?
Sep 3, 2014I have a late 2006 iMac, which I know must be at the end of its life now, but at the weekend my main internal HD developed an error, and it wouldn't boot, even from the recovery partition.Â
I managed to find my old Snow Leapard disks and ran Disk Utility on my HD (when it actually saw it) and the error it came back with was "Invalid Node". After trying many things, I had to reformat and reinstall from my Time Machine back up, which went really well.Â
However, once all restored it tried to do a backup and it failed. I then went into Disk Utility again and it found the same error on the Time Machine drive.Â
Therefore, my question is, could the back up process have copied an 'error' to my back up? Or is this a fault somewhere else (Disk Management etc) that I need to watch in case it cases errors with my other drives that have important information on?Â

May 5, 2008The one response I had was: 'alex try putting your mac os cd in and restart the system holding down the letter d key and let me know what happens.' unfortunately I can't find my system disc... will I need to buy a new one? here's a the problem: I have a PPC G5 iMac 2.1GHz, 1.5GB. The Internal Hard drive is 250GB in total and partitioned into 4 sections. After working fine for ages I suddenly found I can't copy files into one of the partitions. Initially I got an error message saying: "DS_store could not be tead or written. (Error code 36)" I used Disk Utility to clean up the hard drive. Which didn't help. Got a copy of Disk Warrior(4.1) to try a more effective clean up. There were a few errors that found and fixed, but i still got the same error message. Then found a utility called DS_Store Cleaner to try and force it to remake the DS_Store files. This got rd of the DS_Store message but I'm still left with another error 36 message and still unable to properly copy. The message then said: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
I have also got hold of a copy of techtool pro (4.6.1) and run everything - basic, intermediate and advance scans. Everything (aside from a few minor errors on other partitions - which it cleared up easily) was fine, that partition showed no errors at all. I didn't do the full tests on the system partition though as I haven't used the e-drive function yet. The problem has been ongoing since late March.Just today I found the same problem in another of my partitions: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "example file.doc" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).This happens when trying to copy to either of those partitions or trying to save anything to either of them.What might be causing this and what should I do next? with the first partition to have problems I am unable to copy/write any file size (eg KB size files) with the most recent partition I found I could copy a 2.3MB Jpeg. The problem occured when I tried to copy a 680MB .mov file (there was enough space - about 1.8GB)
IMac (Intel) :: Files Have Vanished From 1TB Hard Drive
Sep 2, 2014I own a 2011 iMac OSX 10.9.4 that has a 250GB ssd and a 1TB hard drive built into it. I take a lot of photos, so usually I copy all of them into the 1TB hard drive for storage. A few days ago I wanted to look through some old pictures and found that all my files from after mid 2012 have completely vanished. There is no trace of any updates to this hard drive after mid 2012. I know I did not misplace these photos because I frequently place new folders in the hard drive and view old memories. When I went to place more folders in, I noticed the amount of folders decreased drastically.Â
I've tried searching for the photos in the search bar and scrolling through "All My Files", and they are just not there. I've also tried revealing any hidden folders through Terminal. There are no folders with a modification date past mid 2012. The thing is, everything in the SSD hard drive appears normal and updated, only the 1TB hard drive has reverted back to a 2012 state. Is there any way to retrieve the files? Months of work and photos are gone. How could this have happened? And how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Nov 12, 2008I did do a search on this problem, but i started a new thread b/c I think i may be having a slightly different issue...please hear me out..I have a Macbook, running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11). I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem.However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems. I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file. And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files.

May 26, 2012I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.Â

Sep 2, 2014My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.Â
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac. Â
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).Â
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?Â

Mar 7, 2007I have a 38gb iMovie file on my MacBook. I also have a 160gb external HDD. I want to copy the file across, sounds simple right? It will start copying happily but when it gets to about 8-10gb I get this error message (EVERY TIME!): Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred (Error code -1309). I really do not want to delete this file as it is a wedding video I did for a friend only a few months ago. I am trying to copy across to a Freecom II drive using USB.

Dec 21, 2009ive had an imac g4 for 4 years and the other week the logic board gave up, i took it to a mac repair shop who advised me the repair would cost 600 pounds!! i decided its best to invest in a new imac (running snow leopard if that makes a difference) which im going to buy over the holidays.
the old hard drive has been removed,cased and ready to go. i plugged it into my girlfriends macbook which read it as an external drive... great so far
here comes the question. the drive has all my apps and personal bits which i dont want to loose or reinstall. do i simply drag the applications across on to my new machine? primally interested in iphoto and itunes. will i loose these music files and 4 years of photos?, or can i navigate into the app on the hard drive and drag the files into the new itunes/iphotos on the new machine?

I tried to click on burn and the hard drive is not available. It is not mounted and will not mount. It will not verify or repair either. IMac :: Hard Drive Error - Invalid Sibling Link
Jul 2, 2009It won't start at all or it starts and works really slowly at first. Like the processor would work million times slower, almost like just hangs jammed. Sometimes after hours of trying to get it started, it will start and work normally again for a long time. But when I shut it off or put it to sleep, again it's nearly impossible to get it started again.
The Disk Utility said, that there's an hard drive error "invalid sibling link". I booted from the OS X installation CD and did the repair, but it said it couldn't repair it. Then I did this fix: [URL]. But again it said the same error. Then I booted normally and checked the Verify Disk again and to my suprise it is now saying the hard drive is OK. But it still has the same problem! It just is having really difficult time waking up.

Feb 7, 2010Ok so I have an 8800 GS imac, 3.06 intel core 2, 4 gigs ram. Running snow lepord. I need to resolve an issue where I can not get into OSX. At first I got error messeges saying my external HDD could not read, now it looks like its my primary drive because when I restarted I got the progress bar under the apple logo, indicating that something is wrong with the OS. The bar when to full 100% but then I got stuck at never ending spinning wheel. I restarted and no more progress bar but still the spining wheel of death. I really dont mind refomrating its just that I had some important text documents and other files that I cant get back without recoving them some how. How to proceed? I held down cmd v or s (i forgot) on startup and got a black screen with several problem statements. One reads the system boot strapper has crashed trace BPT trap.
