MacBook Air :: How To Back Up Files On An External Hd
Jul 3, 2012
the mid-2012 MBA is my first mac ever and I'm learning something new everyday. Today, I tried transferring a document from my desktop to my external hard drive and was not able to. Now transferring files from the HD to the mba, totally doable. Vice versa? No dice. A bit of google searching led me to conclude that I can't backup files on my current HD... which is a pity since it's a 1 TB, had it for almost a year, and was hoping to ride this thing for a few more years.
So what do I do now? Does this also mean that I can no longer use my tiny 4/8gb flashdrives to save things on the go? Are there any softwares that would allow me to write files onto my current external HD and flash drives?

My Macbook Pro (2010) hangs up at the grey startup screen. The icon keeps spinning. I believe this may be because the laptop ran out of power during critical software updates. I have been able to reach disk utility by starting up with the original installation cd and holding 'c'. When I verify the disk, I get an error:
"The volume could not be verified completely.
Error: The disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
When I click repair disk, I get the following message:
"Verify and Repair volume "disk0s2"
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
Invalid node structure
The volume could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk.. disk, and restore your backed-up files."
My hard drive isn't fully backed up and I would like to retrieve as many files as possible before reformatting the hard drive.
I have heard of being able to access the hard drive through other means (connecting the drive to another computer and/or another external) and being able to salvage files. Should I get Diskwarrior?

My dear baby, a 3 year old macbook pro died last week (way to young). Fried logicboard. Apple wants 1.550 dollars to fix it, so I guess it is gone for good.
My question is, is it possible to take out the harddisk, put it in an external enclosure and plug it in to another mac to get the files?? If so, what enclosure should I buy?It is a summer 2007 macbook pro.

I have a 500GB external Seagate HD that I have in two partitions, one for Time Machine and one for random media stuff. I was cleaning it out today and realized that when I delete things, it doesn't give me the space back on the hard drive. I've experienced this same problem with a USB drive that I use to transfer files from one computer to another, and it doesn't work unless I use disk utility to "Erase" the drive, then add what I need. I can't afford to erase the drive (not enough room to put it all on the MBP) and am starting to need my space back from the deleted files, how can I do this without ruining the files already on my partition?

Microsoft files (e.g. excel) when forwarded as attachments and received by MacBook Winmail, get converted to winmail.dat files. However, MS Office products cannot open these winmail.dat files. Does anyone have a solution for this "bug"?

My HD recently failed, sent my macbook back to apple and they replaced the HD and recovered the data. However, the data is sitting in one large file on my desktop and the rest of the computer is reset. It means that when I open applications e.g. iTunes, Mail etc none of my previous data is there. Is there any way I can put everything back how it was?

What's the best way to wirelessly b/up 3 mbp's to one external HD? I have 1 using Lion, 2 using Snow Leopard. I just purchased a Seagate 3T b/up for this process. I also use an Airport Router so my thought was to plug the HD into the Airport and use TM.

My iMac is networked via ethernet.
My MBAir is networked via wireless.
I move files back and forth between the two.
Is there an advantage to using a Thunderbolt cable between the two?

I am trying to back up my hard drive to an external (WD My Passport Essential SE) in Disk Utilities (after booting failed). Was getting error-61 until I changed the external format to Mac OS X compatible. But now I am getting an input/output error.
I'm probably going to need to erase my HD and reinstall Lion, so I HAVE to back-up.

My Mac Book Pro doesn't start. when I press the start button It chimes, apple logo, line loading and turns off. Once and again. I tried the Comand-option-P-R and nothing. Tried a lot of tricks I found online and nothing. Finally -And Im not sure how, I think it was the Comand-R opened the Disk Utility and could hit the repair the disk, It said that It couldn't repair -I have almost full capacity 499GB used- but cant remove files since I cant start the computer. Disk Utility told me to Back up Files and Restore -meaning it will wipe out the data, but i will have it on my back up- How do I back up using external hard drive.

Could any readers recommend an affordable basic external hard drive for a macbook air, which would also serve as a back-up for my old pc laptop? I don't need it to be portable, just to serve as back-up at home, though if it doesn't escalate the price too much wireless would be a bonus. I see there is a vast range of products available at a vast range of prices

I probably have all kinds of misconceptions about Resetting to an earlier time for the computer I have. It's a 2009 macbook, running OS 10.8.5. I got it last week, previous to this machine I have been running a powerbook G4. It does not have a backup with Time Machine either.

I recently did a manual reboot after my MacBook Pro had frozen, and instead of the usual Apple and loading icon, it gave me the flashing question mark on a folder, which I've never encountered before. I looked up some possible reasons on my PC, and after reading that there's a problem with my HD I tried looking up how to back up my files so that I can do a clean reinstall of Yosemite (latest ver.). However, I've never used anything like Time Machine or anything else that could back up all my files, so it didn't sound like I could do anything about that at this point. I've also tried going into Disk Utility and attempting to repair the disk image. There was only 2 available, disk0 and the base system. Is there anything I can do that will repair my HD without erasing all my files?

So two months ago my mac's internal hard disk had a problem, it was "ejecting" itself by itself. It was frozen. Problem: I was gonna do a backup the day it happened, so I didn't have a back up. I went to a centre of data recuperation. They managed to get a lot out of the internal hard disk and put it in a new external hard drive. Apple then replaced my SSD, and I restored (from the external hard drive) what had been recuperated back on my computer with a new SSD. Now I realise that a lot of things are missing - especially pictures- which is quite annoying. I do have a very old back up that I did with Time Machine on another external hard drive. My question is: how can I restore only the pictures from that back up? I can't go back on time machine because this is a new SSD, and I don't wanna restore everything from that back up as I have more data on my computer as it is now.

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files. I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.

I have a 1TB OWC External HDD that I like and gives me very little problems. Thing is, I know the current reliability rate of external HDD's are not that good and I would HATE to lose tons of stuff that I have saved on my OWC HDD due to an error or a problem. Is it possible for me to buy a second external HDD to use to back-up my OWC HDD I have now? Sort of as a back-up to my back-up?
