I am trying to back up my hard drive to an external (WD My Passport Essential SE) in Disk Utilities (after booting failed). Was getting error-61 until I changed the external format to Mac OS X compatible. But now I am getting an input/output error.
I'm probably going to need to erase my HD and reinstall Lion, so I HAVE to back-up.

I'm trying to use a lacie 500GB to back up my imac 10.4 prior to upgrading. Shop said i should use the Firewire 800, but my computer doesn't have a port which fits. I am using the firewire 400 but every time i try and use the lacie set up assistant the error message i get says the application installer quit unexpectedly.I have a imac 0s x version 10.4.11 with intel core 2 duo.

My iMac is slowing down and I wanted to upgrade the RAM and upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Here are the specs:

I want to back it up before I upgrade to Snow Leopard. What external hard drive do you recommend? The only things that I want to put on it are my pictures from iPhoto and music from iTunes. I have 12GBs of music and 1,109 pictures in iPhoto. Also, how do I go about getting these things onto the external hard drive? Will it mount on the desktop and then I just drag my files into it?
I have an Iomega UltraMax 750Gb External Hard Drive set up to back up my MacBook Pro. Time Machine uses this hard drive perfectly with no problems. However whenever I want to use the drive to move files around with XP the drive does not show up in my computer. XP recognizes the connection of the hard drive and shows the name of the hard drive connected to the computer when you look at the USB BUSes but still it is not in My Computer. I have everything up to date. I have even partitioned the External Hard Drive so part of it wasn't even touched by Time Machine. View 6 Replies View RelatedTime Machine is backing up my internal 1Mac hard drive fine to an external drive ("backup ext drive"). I have another external hard drive attached to the Mac that I would also like to back up to the back-up ext drive. I've looked around on Time Machine as best I can but can't find any place that lists drives to be backed up, so I can tell Time Machine to back it up, also. I have found a list in Time Machine of drives I can back up to. That list shows both external drives. But of course, I want to back this one up, not use it as a back up drive. Should be something simple I'm missing. I've seen a lot in the forum about issues backing up external ard drives via Airport Express (or Extreme), but though I have Airport Express, both external drives (back up ext drive and the one to be backed up) are directly connected to the iMac, so I'm not trying to use Airport for this.

Over the last few weeks, I have been experiencing crashes on my Macbook Pro. The crash would appear as such: I'll be using Chrome and all of a sudden pages won't load. The mouse continues to work, but if I navigate to the desktop, folder won't open. Then, if I try to quit programs, the dock either becomes unresponsive or programs will only quit if "forced quit." Then the beachball of death appears. The beachball of death will continue for a very long time—perhasp indefinitely, so I decide to manually power down the computer. Â
I have tried to verify the hard drive in Disk Utility, and a few times I have gotten this error: Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocksChecking volume information.Invalid volume free block count(It should be 46122698 instead of 42839276)The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the Mac OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility. So I restart from the system (command-R) and repair the disk. But now within a day or two I get the same error.  Does my hard drive need to be replaced? Am I on borrowed time? My computer is under warranty. Do you think Apple will replace the hard drive? Â

I had Time Machine making wireless backups from my MacBook to a LaCie hard drive plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station. It's worked great for at least year. The 10.5.8 upgrade seems to have broken it. It's still not an Apple supported configuration.

I'd move all the photo's onto my external LaCie Hard Drive. and I'd like to move them back again, i.e direct iPhoto's to these photo's that are on my external Hard Drive. I've made an extensive search before coming on hear to ask, but I can only seem to find "How to send photo's from iPhotos onto an external Hard Drive, but I want to "send them back from the external Hard Drive" but keep them on the external Hard Drive so I son't use up internal Hard Drive space. If I export to desktop, I am ok. I have run disc utils verified disc and fixed permissions on the drive...as welll as the permissions on the Ap library, and a rebuild.
I can also export to a connected thunderbolt. It seems to only be the HD and it happens with differet export settings.Â

I'm about at my wits end. I would say I have a harddisk failure, but it passes every diagnostic I can throw at the thing. My problem is that I erased the main drive in my mac (been booting from an external hd) and I'm trying to install Leopard on this drive. The Leopard install starts, I'm able to choose the disk, and tell it to erase and install (or just install after erasing the disk externally). The installer starts, gets about 30-40 minutes in and then just plain stops because some package or other (seems to be different every time) is corrupt. My only option is to reboot and try again. I've done it three times now and am starting to feel rather stupid. Is there a known issue here that anyone can direct me at? I didn't see anything snarfing around the forums, but that doesn't mean I could've just plain missed it. I've just finished running tech tool pro 4 hardware tests (drive controller, etc.), surface scan, disk utilities erase and verify hoping it would tell me if there is a disk problem brewing. So far all the tests show green. I decided to try and hit the thing with something that writes to every imaginable space on the disk, so I ran erase free space from disk utilities. I plan on trying again after that finishes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

My dear baby, a 3 year old macbook pro died last week (way to young). Fried logicboard. Apple wants 1.550 dollars to fix it, so I guess it is gone for good.

My macbook air keeps glitching. Everytime I start it up, I get a folder with a question mark blinking and i can't get into login in page. After turning on and off about 800 times, I got to my login in page. Ive read i can slip the hard drive out and slip it back in and it will be fine, but I just don't feel good about unscrewing the bottom and exploring my computer. Apparently it has something to do with the hard drive being fried, but obviously it isn't if i can log in one time out of many.Â
So obviously I want to back it up. (It's 11:24 at night).However, I need an external hard drive. Can't drive anywhere at night and grab one. Can't leave my computer on all night either. Is there an alternative way I can back it up until tomorrow? A way I could back it up online? View 6 Replies View RelatedLast night, after a few hours of using it (from 100% to about 8%), I tried turning off the computer for the night. After the dock and everything else disappeared, I got a spinning beach ball of death. The computer wouldn't turn off for at least 15 minutes. I had to do press the power button for 5 seconds to get it to turn off. I restarted it this morning and it seems to be working fine for now, but I'm scared of turning it off again.
Here's what I know: while the beach ball was happening, my wallpaper was still on the screen, the trackpad worked, but the brightness and volumes didn't, so I'm guessing I was logged out and no files were corrupted.
During the beach ball, the hard drive would slow down, then spin back up. I waited until it had slowed down a bit to do the hard reboot. I have to say that I reset the PRAM yesterday morning, thinking it might be good because I changed the hard drive to the Momentus XT last week and I read that you should reset it when you change hardware inside the machine. I did that before the crash, so when it crashed, it was the first time I tried to turn the machine off since resetting the PRAM, could that matter?
This morning, I went to disk utility and repaired permissions, there were probably a few hundred bad permissions, but Mac OS fixed them. I also tried verification, but it was alright. I then ran the daily, weekly and monthly tasks and everything went great.
What should I do? I already have a charger problem and a �screen is too blue whichever way I set it� problem. Do I have a lemon here?
I plug in my hard drive and it is working..click "back up now" and it starts, but stops within a few seconds?
