I have a 1TB OWC External HDD that I like and gives me very little problems. Thing is, I know the current reliability rate of external HDD's are not that good and I would HATE to lose tons of stuff that I have saved on my OWC HDD due to an error or a problem.Is it possible for me to buy a second external HDD to use to back-up my OWC HDD I have now? Sort of as a back-up to my back-up?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was told today by an Apple retail employee that Time Machine will not back up from anything other than an internal drive and I wanted to confirm whether this was the case. For example I have an iMac with a 750GB internal and I also have a 750GB external drive. I want to keep my iTunes Music and iPhoto libraries on the internal but keep all my movies on the external drive for space reasons. I want to then use a 2TB external drive to work with Time Machine. I was told that if I want to back up the 750 "Movies" drive that I will need to manually copy it because Time Machine will only back up the path of those files and that drive can't be included in the backup. To me this seems to go against what TM is about, since I then have to manually manage that part of the backup, adding new items, rather than getting the benefits of TM's incremental backup. Can anyone confirm or deny this. Second question is regarding TM for multiple machines. Can a 2TB drive be used as the TM drive for both an iMac and a MacBook or will the drive need to be partitioned?

For Example: I Have 143.95GB on the External Hard Drive free but when I delete a 20gig file it doesn't give the space back on the External Hard Drive, it stays at 143.95GB. Also, this happens with many of my flash drives etc.

I am using the firewire 400 but every time i try and use the lacie set up assistant the error message i get says the application installer quit unexpectedly.I have a imac 0s x version 10.4.11 with intel core 2 duo.

the mid-2012 MBA is my first mac ever and I'm learning something new everyday. Today, I tried transferring a document from my desktop to my external hard drive and was not able to. Now transferring files from the HD to the mba, totally doable. Vice versa? No dice. A bit of google searching led me to conclude that I can't backup files on my current HD... which is a pity since it's a 1 TB, had it for almost a year, and was hoping to ride this thing for a few more years. Â
So what do I do now? Does this also mean that I can no longer use my tiny 4/8gb flashdrives to save things on the go? Are there any softwares that would allow me to write files onto my current external HD and flash drives?

My iMac is slowing down and I wanted to upgrade the RAM and upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Here are the specs:

Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I want to back it up before I upgrade to Snow Leopard. What external hard drive do you recommend? The only things that I want to put on it are my pictures from iPhoto and music from iTunes. I have 12GBs of music and 1,109 pictures in iPhoto. Also, how do I go about getting these things onto the external hard drive? Will it mount on the desktop and then I just drag my files into it?
Say my macbook pro crashes and I lose everything. However, I have been saving everything to an external drive using the Time Machine app. Can I use my external drive to get my computer to exactly the same state it was in before it crashed? By this I mean.
1) Desktop icons in the same places
2) System preferences all the same
3) Sticky notes all still exist and are laid out on the desktop just like previously before my hard drive crashed and I lost everything
4) My dock layout is exactly the same, same apps, same locations in the dock
I have been wondering this for quite some time. Because I know you can restore the essentials (i.e. Word documents, many different saved files) but what about little things like the above mentioned items?
Last night I noticed that the time machine icon on the menu bar had a stop sign or something and when i clicked back up now it says it can not back up. I verified the volume and recommends a repair but it says it can not repair.

I have an Iomega UltraMax 750Gb External Hard Drive set up to back up my MacBook Pro. Time Machine uses this hard drive perfectly with no problems. However whenever I want to use the drive to move files around with XP the drive does not show up in my computer. XP recognizes the connection of the hard drive and shows the name of the hard drive connected to the computer when you look at the USB BUSes but still it is not in My Computer. I have everything up to date. I have even partitioned the External Hard Drive so part of it wasn't even touched by Time Machine. I have another external hard drive attached to the Mac that I would also like to back up to the back-up ext drive. I've looked around on Time Machine as best I can but can't find any place that lists drives to be backed up, so I can tell Time Machine to back it up, also. I have found a list in Time Machine of drives I can back up to. That list shows both external drives. But of course, I want to back this one up, not use it as a back up drive. Should be something simple I'm missing. I've seen a lot in the forum about issues backing up external ard drives via Airport Express (or Extreme), but though I have Airport Express, both external drives (back up ext drive and the one to be backed up) are directly connected to the iMac, so I'm not trying to use Airport for this.

I was cleaning it out today and realized that when I delete things, it doesn't give me the space back on the hard drive. I've experienced this same problem with a USB drive that I use to transfer files from one computer to another, and it doesn't work unless I use disk utility to "Erase" the drive, then add what I need. I can't afford to erase the drive (not enough room to put it all on the MBP) and am starting to need my space back from the deleted files, how can I do this without ruining the files already on my partition?

I believe this may be because the laptop ran out of power during critical software updates. I have been able to reach disk utility by starting up with the original installation cd and holding 'c'. When I verify the disk, I get an error:Â

When I click repair disk, I get the following message:Â

I recently bought a 1 TB external HD to put mainly media pics,music,movies etc. onto. I now have my original 200 GB external to use as a back up drive. I would like to use this drive to back up both my mac and my pc. I had Time Machine making wireless backups from my MacBook to a LaCie hard drive plugged into an Airport Extreme Base Station. It's worked great for at least year. The 10.5.8 upgrade seems to have broken it. It's still not an Apple supported configuration.
