Mac Pro :: Best Place To Install Jam Packs (SSD Bootdrive)?
Nov 28, 2010I have a 120GB SSD that I boot from and would preferably like to keep this as free as possible. I have all of the Jam Packs and would like to install these now but can only seem to be able to select the boot drive to install them onto.
I have 2 1tb Caviar Blacks with nothing on right now.
Do they have to go on the boot drive? They will fit if need be, I'd just prefer to keep the boot drive less cluttered.
OS X :: Clone Drive Of Mini Using CD SATA Port?
May 9, 2009I'm thinking of upgrading my HDD on my new Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo) and I'm wondering if this is possible. I would like to clone the old to the new without having to buy a USB or Firewire to SATA adapter. Would it be possible to disconnect the Super Drive(CD/DVD) and connect up the new drive, use Super Duper to clone, then replace the old with the new and reconnect the Super Drive?
I've searched the forums to see if anyone has tried this but I didn't find anything. I'm not even sure if there is a second SATA port that would work for a HDD. I know the Super Drive is a SATA because it's listed when I look at system info.
I've seen a lot of folks using USB or Firewire to do this so that's my backup plan but it would seem if I can get both drives connected this would be pretty straight forward.

Nov 27, 2009I'm replacing my 320GB HD from my late '08 MBP with a new Hitachi 500GB unit.
It would be a shame to let the old HD go to waste, so I was wondering what SATA enclosures you guys and girls are using? Preferably something that will connect to my MBP using either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. There are so many out there, I don't want to buy the wrong one and be disappointed with the quality. Mac Mini :: HDD Upgrade - SATA II - Tiger Up To Snow Leopard Install Solution?
May 14, 2010I want to upgrade my wife's Mac Mini (2007, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, model T2300) with a new HDD. I've done that a couple years back, but times were less complicated. Here are my questions:
1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?
2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?
Mac Pro :: External SATA Drive Spontaneously Disconnects
Oct 2, 2009Machine is an early 2008 Mac Pro. I'm connecting two external SATA desktop hard drives via eSATA (NewerTech Voyager S2 enclosures) and a Newer Technology eSATA Extender Cable (connected to the 5th and 6th internal SATA headers). One of the drives is used as a Time Machine backup disk. This TM disk has been periodically disconnecting and generating warning messages about improper ejection. It reconnects with a restart, but usually will disconnect again within a day. I swapped the drives in the docks, so each was connected via the other dock, cable, and internal header. The same problem persists - the TM disk disconnects periodically despite having switched docks.

May 5, 2012Im considering purchasing a higher capacity internal hardrive around the 750Gb/1Tb mark. However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc. Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

Apr 11, 2012I realised a couple of days ago that several of my movies and tv shows that I purchased are no longer downloaded on my computer but are stored on the cloud. Now how do I get a backup on my drobo external disk? I don't want to fall or be without wifi and not being able to watch movies or tv shows.
Music has a download icon next to it, but that is not there for movies and tv shows. I have my itunes folder on my drobo, and want to keep it that way...

Dec 18, 2007I'm looking for a new HD to replace the original, now failing Maxtor drive in my G5 tower (1.8 Ghz dual processor, purchased in Aug. 2004), and have just about settled on the Western Digital Caviar SE16 series. It seems there are two types -- SATA and SATA II -- and I'm not sure about how to make a decision on which particular WD model to buy.
Will either type work in my machine? Or would the SATA II have potential compatibility problems? I read somewhere in these forums that someone with a G5 had bought an SATA II drive, and it wouldn't run with his system. (He said he had to reset some jumper switches to reduce the transfer rate of the drive ??, but now I'm told elsewhere that SATA drives don't have jumper switches.

I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

I think it's got a 120gb hd and 512mb of ram.
I basically want to make it run OSX.
The computer is crashed (), so it turns on runs really, really slow (takes 10 mins to load safari)
I have nothing other than the install discs and the computer.

So I had an idea, since Bootcamp is some sort of layer where the EFI Mac acts like a BIOS PC, would it be possible to run an actual Mac Pro as a Hackintosh?
I am not trying to be funny or cute or clever. I really am curious if a n EFI Mac can pretend to be a BIOS PC that is running a FakeSMC kind of deal and boot OSX as aPC with 2 Xeon Processors, 4.762 blahblahblah Northbridge, Southbridge, etc?
That way, I could compare 5870 running in Hack perfectly to 5870 running in Mac POORLY and only change the one CRUCIAL variable.

Sep 10, 2010Up until a few hours ago, I knew absolutely NOTHING about the Console or what an ipfw.log was but I've been learning very quickly. I was always under the impression that Mac user couldn't have issues with hackers, so I never really worried about anything until I found this tiny little window hidden in the upper left hotspot (set to display all windows). Then, earlier this evening, it literally seemed like someone was making all of my folders, pic, ext..disappear, and then reappear in another area. I understand that their are "bots" constantly trying to login to your computer, but from what I saw in past posts, it shouldn't be this extreme!

'6' and '4' on Snow Leopard won't boot into 64-bit mode. I don't need the 64-bit kernel at this point, but I'm mostly curious to see what drivers and apps breaks under a 64-bit kernel and the only way to find out is to try it.
There's a pretty nifty hack involving hex editing boot.efi that works for some suitable Macs:

No mention of MBP, and my attempts at guessing offsets and values while hex editing didn't cause any booting issues but didn't result in 64-bit kernel loading, either. Anybody happen to know offset and value in boot.efi to mod for a MBP?
I know this is a real long shot type of question and I'm not expecting anybody to know. But if you do, would love to find out.
