I've tried numerous mounting brackets, and although they will hold the drive firmly in place, none of them can get the connectors lined up.
For the time being I've taken the precarious method of taping my SSD in place while it's connected to the motherboard. Of course, I don't want this to be a permanent solution.
Would this cable enable me to mount the drive in place and connect it to the motherboard?

Jul 3, 2009So I was swapping some hard drives around in my 12-hour old 15" June Unibody MBP and apparently I broke the hard drive cable. More like I tore 3/4s than broke it. Thankfully I was installing a SSD into the optical drive so I'm still up and running, I just don't have the stock HDD in there as a data drive.
I saw something on eBay for around $50 - I'll have to open the MBP back up and see precisely what the cable looks like - I'm wondering if there's a store that'll have the piece I require? I'd prefer to not take it to an Apple store and have them void my warranty because the HDD isn't user-serviceable part.

May 9, 2009I am buying a used Powermac, G5 Dual 2GHz. It already has a SATA 320GB HD in it but I want to use my SATA 160GB from my dead iMac. The only questions I have are:
1. Is there anything special I need to do installing the second SATA drive? Does the drive need to be set to Slave or Cable Select?
2. Because the 160GB (going to use for storing musc) drive has OS X Tger installed, will it be a problem when booting once I install both drives? The 320GB drive has Leopard (This will be my primary drive). Will it boot to Leopard and let me use disk utility for format the 160GB drive?

When I first switched on the mac mini I was presented with standard setup screen to choose language, then progressed through setup, including entering my apple id. I thought this would have linked my apple id to lion which is pre-installed, but when I signed into mac app store neither lion or iLife suite show up under purchases.My main concern is that I was planning to upgrade hard drive and I won't be able to install lion to it.

May 9, 2009I'm thinking of upgrading my HDD on my new Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo) and I'm wondering if this is possible. I would like to clone the old to the new without having to buy a USB or Firewire to SATA adapter. Would it be possible to disconnect the Super Drive(CD/DVD) and connect up the new drive, use Super Duper to clone, then replace the old with the new and reconnect the Super Drive?
I've searched the forums to see if anyone has tried this but I didn't find anything. I'm not even sure if there is a second SATA port that would work for a HDD. I know the Super Drive is a SATA because it's listed when I look at system info.
I've seen a lot of folks using USB or Firewire to do this so that's my backup plan but it would seem if I can get both drives connected this would be pretty straight forward.

May 14, 2010I want to upgrade my wife's Mac Mini (2007, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, model T2300) with a new HDD. I've done that a couple years back, but times were less complicated. Here are my questions:
1) I hope a 7200 rpm drive will improve performance, without generating more noise than a 5400 rpm drive. Is that a correct assumption and would you recommend that?
2) Looks like many of the 500 GB 7200 rpm drives are SATA II. Will that be compatible with the plugs in the machine? Will I have to set any kind of jumper pins (I've never done that, though)? 3) My plan is to naturally do a time machine back up of the current drive to use it to build the new one. However, I still need to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The Mac mini came with a Tiger install disc. How do I get to SL with the least trouble? Do I need to start with the original Tiger disc, then use the Leopard disc and finally upgrade with the SL disc or can I use the SL disc right away?

Last week it suddenly started incrementing the computer name on the network: myName Mini (2), MyName Mini (3),...This causes issues with banking software because it assumes it is a new computer each time and makes me register the new computer each time.

However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt)Â From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.Â
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc.    Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?
