this is an old machine, can i replace optical drive with sata hard disk 2.5'' with any size like 500GB, Internally not externally.
I read this somewhere but i cant seem to find it anywhere on google.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 2005 G5 and my Bottom bay HD wires are busted. I need to obviously buy new ones but the problem is I can't figure out where the wires go, I can find the smaller wire, but not the bigger power wire (i think its the power). When I open up the G5 it looks like the big wire goes behind the board (and I really dont want to take the whole thing apart!). Does anyone have a picture explaining where all the wires go in a 2005 G5. I have goggled it, but just internal pics and simple explanations come up, I am looking for something more complicated so I know where the bottom bay wires go to.If anyone has switched out the wires before please let me know, cause this is nuts. They make everything else in the G5 easy to do but this. ( This all happened because I shipped it and the wires snapped on my bottom drive)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone had successfully installed and 2nd hard drive in their iMac?I have a 2 year old 2.8 24'' iMac and the performance just isn't cutting the mustard, it's all hard drive related and I already have a decent 1TB drive in there.I was thinking of perhaps swapping the optical drive with a second hard drive for RAID0, but not too sure if there will be space and was wondering if the optical drive is a standard SATA connector, or if there is some way I could run a SATA+power cables externally?

My question is putting the SSD on optical drive bay or Hard disk drive bay, is there any difference in performance? My understanding from my old PC is never to share the SATA cable with the optical drive as it will take the transfer speed of the optical drive, because they are running in the same "channel"?Is the 2 SATA cable in the optical drive bay 2 separate distinct ports/channel?
View 6 Replies View RelatedLooking at blu-ray drives, I thought of an interesting question, and I just wanted to know if anyone knows the answer...why was an older standard used for the MacPro's optical bays, especially when the HDs use SATA? And I know the motherboard has sata ports, so that's not my issue. It's just kind of a pain having to use an adapter or run a cable to the motherboard if I want to use a sata blu-ray drive for example.

On my Rev. C. Before I installed it, my fan kicked in only when I had a external device attached, hard disk drive, optical drive, etc. Now it runs more often. Not a big deal, but thought worth mentioning.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if it would be possible to fit an extra 1.8" sata ssd in my macbookpro 15" without removing the optical drive. This way i can keep my 500GB storage and move the OS to a 128Gb ssd. I was hoping to stick a 1.8" ssd on to my standard hdd. since the 1.8" is only 5mm thick. This would require a new sata cable from the motherboard to my 2.5" and to my 1.8" I'm not sure this exists. Does anybody think this is possible? or not?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of upgrading my HDD on my new Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo) and I'm wondering if this is possible. I would like to clone the old to the new without having to buy a USB or Firewire to SATA adapter. Would it be possible to disconnect the Super Drive(CD/DVD) and connect up the new drive, use Super Duper to clone, then replace the old with the new and reconnect the Super Drive?
I've searched the forums to see if anyone has tried this but I didn't find anything. I'm not even sure if there is a second SATA port that would work for a HDD. I know the Super Drive is a SATA because it's listed when I look at system info.
I've seen a lot of folks using USB or Firewire to do this so that's my backup plan but it would seem if I can get both drives connected this would be pretty straight forward.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a 500gig WD Caviar SATA hard drive for my Mac Pro. When it is being written to it creates noise in my speakers. I've had this problem with external hard drives before (Seagate) and thought I'd be avoiding this by going with an internal drive.
Could I have installed it incorrectly? Is there anything I can do, or should return it and see if I have better luck with a new one?
When I sold my old desktop PC i took out the SATA hard drive (WD1600JS). My question is how can I access that drive without buying a external drive enclosure? What cables will I need? I just want to hook it up and see what's on it and completely erase the drive so I can give it away. I don't even have to see what's on it, i'm more concerned with erase the info. I have access to a PC at work if this has to be done with a PC and not my MBP

Anyone know of a way to satisfy the SecuROM DRM when your Mac doesn't have an optical drive? I've tried using Remote Disc, but SecuROM's too dumb to work with it. I have a Macbook white Early 09' (February) and apple says that it is a ATA Hardrive which I thought was ridiculous because almost all laptops have SATA Hardrives and some people on the forum talk about replacing there white macbook's hardrive which is a ATA Hardrive with a SATA Hardrive. I want to replace my 120GB ATA HD with a new one , but is it possible to replace a ATA HD WITH A SATA HD?, OR is there no difference?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a G4 Mac I wanted to buy a much larger drive. I bought a 1TB SATA internal drive, but when I tried to install it I found out it could not be installed on my G4. The motherboard does not have slots for the cable that came with the SATA drive. The hard drive that came with the computer is Ultra ATA from Seagate 180 GB. I found out that ATA and SATA have completely different configurations. I am planning to return it to the store. Is there anyway I can use the SATA on my G4, or should I just buy a larger Ultra ATA?

I recently bought too an eSata powered cable and a express card esata who came with it. The hard drive can't be detect on my macbook pro unibody late 2008 2,4" but runs. I install the silicon image drivers non-SL and adding over that the SL drivers.

We have i-Mac 20" with built in i-sight Power PC, one of last ones I think before the intel. We have had a few problems before with it powering down and going to sleep. Used to hoover dust out and that seemed to fix it.
Now it won't start at all. I have tried all the PRAM and various commands to re set various things but none of these work. We had a wireless keyboard and I have just tried a wired one but I do not think either are connecting as the tab key light does not come on, which it does when I tested the wired on on my lap top.
When it died it crashed with a cd in drive. I have removed this and replaced it with the mac install disk to try and run the disk check but the optical drive is not starting at all either.
All that happens on start up is the sleep light comes on, then after a few moments fan starts to whirl. I can't hear the hard drive - have tried to rock hard drive to get it to spin but nothing.
Just wondering whether worth trying to replace optical drive or is this being controlled by hard drive - hence its not working nor hard drive. is there any way to recover data if it is the hard drive that is dead? anything else I can try and replace to fix it? could I use an external optical drive connected via USB to start?
I have tried to firewire but not joy their either!
I am wondering if anyone knows where I can get the screws that go in the side of the hard drive and the standoffs (screws) for the bottom of the optical drive for a Power Mac G5.
The hard drive needs screws so it will slide into and sit in the case properly.
I bought a Pioneer DVD drive to replace the original Sony SuperDrive. Apparently, there are different sized standoffs for Pioneer and Sony drives. With the Sony standoffs on the Pioneer drive, the tray scrapes the case when it ejects.
I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

The new Mac mini is indeed quite as dead! Love it so far.
Only thing is that, it's a bit slower compares to my Mac pro. It's expected. So I need upgrade some memory and harddisk I think.
I am thinking if I can buy a new HDD, put it into USB enclosure and duplicate OS over and then swap using Disk Utility booted from DVDROM, is it possible? I hate re-install OS. Anyone did this before that can confirm it's doable over USB?
