I'm looking for a PCIe SATA controller for my Mac Pro 1,1 with both internal* and external (to connect two external drives) ports. internal SATA port needed to connect an LG BluRay drive (GGW-H20L) actually connected to the ODD SATA port (but I want to use it on Windows too and I would like to upgrade firmware without opening my Mac or using the AHCI mode).

Now I am looking for a host adapter that I can connect all 4 to create a Strip and boot off of. I am currently using a Sonnet E4i but it doesnt support booting. My Christmas wish: an internal SATA host adapter that allows booting and works with snow leopard.

However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt) From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have: Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc. Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

I have installed 2 extra hdd's in my 2008 mac pro using the 2 extra sata ports. I was wondering if it would be possible to install a sata controller in the mac pro to increase my sata ports so I can add 2 more sata drives instead of the remaining optical drive. And if I can where would it go.

As I write this, I've got CCC cloning the entire drive and praying that it doesn't fail mid-copy.
I have a PowerMac G4 (MDD 2003, I believe) that I use as my home media server for my Apple TV. Currently I have a 14+14GB boot RAID and 75+75GB storage RAID, using old PATA drives, of course. This is working great and is pretty well performing so far, but I'm going to run out of space eventually since I'm a packrat. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using the first generation Mac Pro, and I wanted to ask some questions related to SATA HDD and The Raid configuration. I currently have 4 HDDs in the internal bay and 2 external in the enclosure using the USB2 connection. The performance is not that great, and I am sick of adding more HDDs through USB2 which offers really slow performance. I was thinking of building a dedicated NFS File Server using Linux, but before I did that, I wanted to ask if there are solutions out there within Apple Mac Pro without going through this route.
I currently have 6 and probably need to buy 3 more in very short time period. also, all of my HDDs are 750g. Simply put, I am wondering if there are like 16 or 24 port SATA Raid Controller that I can buy for MacPro. Since the MacPro can't house all of them inside, I need to use external enclosures for some of these HDDs, connected through eSATA or whatever means possible without jeopardizing the performance. I am also interested in Raid 5 setup, so, that support in raid card is mandatory.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need a simple, non fancy SATAII controller I can put into my 2009 Mac Pro. I don't need RAID, it's basically just for connecting DVD drives. The only thing that's important is that I can boot from that controller. I currently have one by jmicron that can boot OS X, but it does not boot Windows DVDs. Not sure why. Nice to have would be eSATA for external stuff. Any recommendations?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a really weird question, but here'goes: I just got my internal blu-ray burner. I hooked it up, removing the fans and all that jazz to get the SATA cable plugged in. Turned on the computer, and the drive was not recognized.
I know it has power, since I can operate it manually (but no disks inserted are recognized in System Profiler nor Toast). Oh, and in the System Profiler under Serial-ATA it does list 6 ports (though 2 with hard drives, 1 and 4-6 are empty).
I fiddled around, made sure cables were plugged in, still nothing.
Then I tried to just plug in one of my extra internal hard drives through the connectors I was using for the 2nd optical drive (power and SATA cable). It won't recognize the hard drive (doesn't seem to even know it's there).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a G4 Mac I wanted to buy a much larger drive. I bought a 1TB SATA internal drive, but when I tried to install it I found out it could not be installed on my G4. The motherboard does not have slots for the cable that came with the SATA drive. The hard drive that came with the computer is Ultra ATA from Seagate 180 GB. I found out that ATA and SATA have completely different configurations. I am planning to return it to the store. Is there anyway I can use the SATA on my G4, or should I just buy a larger Ultra ATA?

I've recently bought a WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 2.5" SATA hard drive to put in my PS3. I decided instead to put this in my MacBook Pro and put the 320GB drive from my MBP in the PS3 - which I have done and works perfectly.
Now the problem is the WD HDD in the MBP. I can physically hear the HDD spin down and then almost immediately spin up again. Whilst in this state of "spin down" OSX is a little unresponsive. Does anyone know how to stop the drive from shutting down so often. It literally happens every few seconds. I haven't noticed the problem when booted in Windows 7 though I could be wrong.
I recently purchased a SteelSeries GC3 controller mainly to use for playing emulator games (Dolphin Emulator) on my Macbook Pro (Retina). However, after hours of trying to get the controller to work I have had no success. When I plug it into my computer it lights up showing that the computer recognizes it but it won't recognize it on any program. Well actually, the first time I plugged it in it was able to recognize the buttons when programming their commands for the emulator but never worked in the actual game itself. Now it wont even recognize when programming.

I'm replacing my 320GB HD from my late '08 MBP with a new Hitachi 500GB unit.
It would be a shame to let the old HD go to waste, so I was wondering what SATA enclosures you guys and girls are using? Preferably something that will connect to my MBP using either Firewire 800 or USB 2.0. There are so many out there, I don't want to buy the wrong one and be disappointed with the quality. I'm connecting two external SATA desktop hard drives via eSATA (NewerTech Voyager S2 enclosures) and a Newer Technology eSATA Extender Cable (connected to the 5th and 6th internal SATA headers). One of the drives is used as a Time Machine backup disk. This TM disk has been periodically disconnecting and generating warning messages about improper ejection. It reconnects with a restart, but usually will disconnect again within a day. I swapped the drives in the docks, so each was connected via the other dock, cable, and internal header. The same problem persists - the TM disk disconnects periodically despite having switched docks.

I have seen these IDE to SATA adapters and I am wondering if it will work for me if I get an internal SATA drive to replace my 120GB, assuming I have enough space to insert the adapter.
