Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be occurring? I've only installed a few applications on the Mini and no hacks.
The monitor will shut off but the Mini won't go to sleep on its own.
My aging G4 Quicksilver is still very operable yet have had mysterious problems with mouse tracking, USB ports not being recognized and now the machine wants to shut off after being asleep for some time. Someone suggested that it could be a voltage regulation problem, but service personnel have not been able to duplicate the problem with a bench test. In short, when I have a startup problem (the startup button will start to glow, at startup and then the light goes out and the machine fails to boot) or if I find the machine turned off after I left it to sleep at night or a few hours during the day, I will open the case and shut it. This little nudge seems to be a temperary fix. Nervous it does make me that my time is short with this trusty box.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a second monitor (Dell 20 inch widescreen) hooked up to my 24 inch iMac, and while I'm running windows, when the iMac monitor sleeps, it sleeps. But, in Leopard (v10.5.7) whenever the iMac monitor sleeps, the secondary monitor does what a monitor usually does when the video cable is unplugged (does the whole factory test thing with the box of red/green/blue randomly moving around.) Is there any way to make it sleep?
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I was watching a film from an external hdisk with VSL program.I had connected my Macbook pro to my LCd tv with a DVI/HDMI cable.When the film finished i went to another room to do something and when i came back the monitor and the tv were black . I pressed the esc key but nothing.I pressed the power button off and on again but nothing.The mac is sleeping.I disconnected the battery but nothing.
My Macbookpro is three years old and this is the first time that i have a problem.I tested a lot of combination of keys ,something like the ctrl+alt+del in PC but nothing.
As the title asks, really. Is it safer for an iMac to be shut down from a power cut whilst turned on, or whilst sleeping? We tend to get a power cut once every couple of months.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a mac mini which i use as a HTPC. A lot of the time i use VNC to connect to this machine when i'm not using it as a HTPC. The problem is that it always goes into some sort of sleep mode when i haven't used it for some time. I'm not to familiar with the ways in which a mac can sleep/hybernate but what i'm looking for is a way to let it sleep but still allow me to connect to it through VNC. Alternatively i'd like to be able to remotely wake it up somehow.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI started to notice a "popping" noise (about 1 Hz) when I got external speakers for my Mac Mini. It occurs when the Mac is sleeping and the external screen is on (but sleeping its own "sleep"). If I disconnect the analog audio out (from where the external speakers take their signal) the popping ends. If I connect headphones to the same jack, I hear no popping in them. If I hit the power button on the external screen and power it down, the popping ends. It will not return even though I power the screen on again.If I disconnect the USB cable that power the speakers from the Mac, the popping ends, but returns when I connect again.

Ever since I reformatted my Mac a few weeks ago, I've had some interesting new problems. I've been told for some of them that it is because before my reformat, my Mac was updated from Snow Leopard, and carried over some stuff into Lion.
This problem involves iTunes 10.6 and streaming to a second-generation Apple TV. (The 720p version, but running iOS 5 that came out with the new 1080p Apple TV) The problem involves my Mac going to sleep. I can fix the problem, but it works differently than it used to: Before, my Mac went to sleep after three hours of inactivity; if my iTunes library was being accessed by my AppleTV, iPhone, or iPad using Home Sharing, it would never sleep as long as it was being accessed remotely. Now, however, it will still sleep if it is being accessed, which causes problems since my Mac is on the other end of the house from the Apple TV, and I often run it for more than three hours when listening to music as ambiance or watching a television/movie marathon from my iTunes Library.
I can set my Mac to never sleep, but I would prefer it would still sleep after the three hours -- assuming it wouldn't sleep while accessing it from Home Sharing.

Whenever i put mac macbook pro to sleep, it only stays sleeping for about half an hour and then wakes itself up. It does it whether i close the screen or manually put it to sleep. When its awake, the system is running but the screen is dark unless i click a button.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?
The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Just bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.
Is there a noticable difference between using a mini DP DVI vs mini DP VGA to external monitor that has both types of inputs?

My father owns one of the original G5s, so its power pc not intel. Today while browsing an excel spreadsheet he says part of the screen turned black, then the monitor shut off, then the monitor came back on but not video. Mean while the fans started spinning out of control. Now when he tries to turn it on, he gets power, but all that happens is the fans spinning faster and faster and faster until he turns it off. No video or anything. Just speeding fans. He fears the CPUs died since they control the fans. Any suggestions? He also says the fans were spinning unusually fast these last few days.

Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice.For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

Im running a Mac Mini 2.1 on OSX. Using SMFanControl its showing me 1600-1700 rpm and a temp of 151F as i type this but spikes between 140-170F is this normal? I have to run a fan behind the computer for any kind of gaming or else it shuts down ( due to heat im sure )

I can't restart or shut down the mini, due to "operations still in progress." How do I workaround this problem? It seems to occur after I've done a Software Update. The only way I can shut down is with the power switch.

I noticed the fans are right next to the hinge on the aluminum macbooks and it looks like the airflow is blocked if its shut. Right now i have a monitor hooked up, is it fine leaving my screen shut while using another keyboard without warping my screen or overheating my computer?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have the 2.53ghz with 4gigz of Ram MacMini from Xmas 2009.A few of you know that I had been trying out different SSD's before finally jumping on with OWC 60gig SSD. I've had it for about 2 months now and it works great except I've recently been having my computer freeze and the beach ball of death appears constantly when on Safari and sometimes iMovie. After shutting down the computer manually, sometimes booting up will leave me at the grey screen for minutes before i shut it down and wait maybe 30 mins before i fire it up again, which usually works 9/10 times.
I also noticed the beach ball delaying certain processes like loading Safari or a webpage. For example, I have my OWC External hooked up via FireWire800 with just my music and videos, however occasionally if im browsing thru websites or loading a program it'll cycle the external and have the beachball as if trying to load something before proceeding. It is more an annoyance than a problem.
I ran disk utility on all my drives as well as the Apple Hardware Test CD to see if maybe my Logic Board was the problem. I did the general test as well as the indepth test, both show negative signs of a problem.Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem?Should I put the factory drive back in and take it to Apple to run their diagnostic test?Could the SSD be failing? (I could RMA it, but didn't know if its an Apple issue vs OWC)

With the announcement of the new Mini's, I'm considering selling my MBP and ATV and replacing them with a new Mini and iPad.
My wife already has an iPad so it would be great to solely control the Mini with our iPads but do you new a keyboard and mouse for initial installation or at any point after? It really would be a waste of money to have to buy them just to get the thing running.
Is there an app out there that can act a full BT keyboard if need be? Rowmote looks pretty sweet for day-to-day use.
That said, I don't think the Mini would get much use, the iPads would be our main net/mail/cal/etc companions, the Mini would simply be the mothership, holding all our music, videos, etc. I still need a full computer for all my photo and home movie editing, otherwise I'd consider a beaten up old powerbook or iBook.
Also, what would be the advantage of getting OSX Server? If it helps, we have no other computers in the house, only 2 iPhones and 2 iPads (potentially).
