When my laptop stopped recognizing my external keyboard and mouse I searched the discussions and found an answer that has worked, but only temporarily. It was to do a PRAM reset 3 times and when I do this the keyboard and mouse work fine. But when I disconnect the mouse and keyboard and then later reconnect it will not recognize them. I have repeated the PRAM reset 3 times each time this has happened (4 times) and they work fine but then there is always a problem when I disconnect and reconnect.Â

I have a Mac Mini 2006 with Core Duo 1.66Ghz and an 80GB HDD. I use this computer as a Media Centre PC (not really nesecarry information). The 80GB hard drive has died in this machine. I know this because I took the drive out, formatted it, reinstalled it in the mini and attempted to install snow leopard from a boot disk. It gets to about 60% and then throws an error - clearly the drive is about to die. Â
In my wisdom, I opened the Mini up and replaced the hard drive with a drive from an old (but dead) windows laptop. When I did so and rebooted, I connected a USB keyboard and held down the option key on boot to boot into startup screen (to select the the boot disk I had made). The SL boot disk on a USB key which is recognised when I boot it on another mac. The mini seems not to recognise the keyboard input when holding down the option key. The mac booted straight into Windows which was on the new drive. It booted into the windows "windows did not boot correctly last time, do you want to start up in startup mode?) screen. The keyboard inputs were also not recognized on this screen.Â
I thought that there may have been an error because windows was on the drive, so I scrubbed the drive and re-installed it as a completely blank drive in the Mini. Again attempted to get to the startup screen and again the same problem. Only this time I am getting a flashing folder with a question mark (meaning the mini cannot detect any bootable drive presumably). The USB stick is flashing, but to me the Mini cannot recognize the keyboard input from the connected keyboard. Could the USB ports have somehow been damaged? Also through this process, I have reset the P-RAM on the mini as well. Â
I recently obtained a Mini which I've connected to my TV for watching movies/etc. I don't have a keyboard or mouse on the Mini.I ripped a disc the other night (via a remote connection) and realized that I don't know how to eject the disc from the Mini without a keyboard, mouse, or remote connection from my MBP. I suppose there is probably some way to script MTR and then execute a disktool afterwards but what if I'm just watching a disc and want to eject it?

I then have to attach a keyboard and mouse before it will continue booting. Is there a way to disable keyboard and mouse completely? I will either control it remotely or use the remote control for Front Row.

i'm using a mac mini and also another Windows PC tower. whenever i want to switch between them i need to re-plug in my headphones/keyboard/mouse/display and this is getting annoying. i've been using a usb hub for the mouse and keyboard so it's not as difficult to setup. is there anything out there that'll allow me to switch between them more easily? I recently updated to Lion Server 10.7.4 on my MacMini 5,3 (Mid 2011). Now whenever I use Lion Recovery (Ctrl-R at boot), the keyboard does not function. The mouse cursor moves around, but clicking the mouse button has no effect. I am unable to run any of the utilities (recovery, disk utility, etc.) and I am forced to press the power button to turn off the computer.Â

I've just recently noticed that my iMac display won't go to sleep, despite my energy settings should turn it off after 5 minutes of inactivity. The only difference I can think of is that instead of my Mighty Mouse, I now use a Microsoft standard USB mouse. Is the Microsoft mouse somehow keeping the iMac "active"? What else could just suddenly stop my iMac display from turning off automatically?
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone have any ideas on why this might be occurring? I've only installed a few applications on the Mini and no hacks.
The monitor will shut off but the Mini won't go to sleep on its own.
I recently purchased a mac mini which i use as a HTPC. A lot of the time i use VNC to connect to this machine when i'm not using it as a HTPC. The problem is that it always goes into some sort of sleep mode when i haven't used it for some time. I'm not to familiar with the ways in which a mac can sleep/hybernate but what i'm looking for is a way to let it sleep but still allow me to connect to it through VNC. Alternatively i'd like to be able to remotely wake it up somehow.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI started to notice a "popping" noise (about 1 Hz) when I got external speakers for my Mac Mini. It occurs when the Mac is sleeping and the external screen is on (but sleeping its own "sleep"). If I disconnect the analog audio out (from where the external speakers take their signal) the popping ends. If I connect headphones to the same jack, I hear no popping in them. If I hit the power button on the external screen and power it down, the popping ends. It will not return even though I power the screen on again. If I disconnect the USB cable that power the speakers from the Mac, the popping ends, but returns when I connect again.Â

Ever since I reformatted my Mac a few weeks ago, I've had some interesting new problems. I've been told for some of them that it is because before my reformat, my Mac was updated from Snow Leopard, and carried over some stuff into Lion.Â
This problem involves iTunes 10.6 and streaming to a second-generation Apple TV. (The 720p version, but running iOS 5 that came out with the new 1080p Apple TV) The problem involves my Mac going to sleep. I can fix the problem, but it works differently than it used to: Before, my Mac went to sleep after three hours of inactivity; if my iTunes library was being accessed by my AppleTV, iPhone, or iPad using Home Sharing, it would never sleep as long as it was being accessed remotely. Now, however, it will still sleep if it is being accessed, which causes problems since my Mac is on the other end of the house from the Apple TV, and I often run it for more than three hours when listening to music as ambiance or watching a television/movie marathon from my iTunes Library.Â
I can set my Mac to never sleep, but I would prefer it would still sleep after the three hours -- assuming it wouldn't sleep while accessing it from Home Sharing.

He restarted by holding the Power button, and it go to the log-in screen, but he can't type anything, or use the trackpad. He has tired restarting several times and no luck. He also tried an external Keyboard/Mouse and that didn't work.
He did plug in a Flash drive and the light turned on, so the USB ports are at least getting power, but nothing is working.
A month or so I got an iMac and it's been pretty awesome, despite two dead pixels! Today I wonder if perhaps I'm beyond help, and how in the world this could happen. This story begins with me using my Logitech MX Revolution mouse. It's a nice mouse, I really like it! When I first go the mac I promptly went to Logitech's site and downloaded the official logitech control center and everything worked out fine. Until a day ago, when I read that the logitech drivers are sort of sloppy, and using an utility such as USB overdrive, or steermouse would be better. (I decided to go for steermouse, as it looked to be more recently updated)
I uninstalled the logitech pref pane, and installed steermouse. This is where my troubles began. I couldn't quite seem to get the mouse to work properly, no matter what I tried on the menu. So I decided that, well, I guess this program is crap, and uninstalled it. When I went to reinstall the logitech pref pane, things started getting weird......................
I just bought a MacBook (13.3", 2GHz, 160GB, 2GB Aluminum, Late 2008)on ebay and at first the usb ports seemed temperamental. Now they only recognize my mouse and no other hardware (camera, usb stick etc). (It is running snow leopard.)

In order to select a partition, I'm supposed to use the arrow keys on my keyboard, but my keyboard doesn't seem to be recognized by the installer, as well as other keyboards I've tried. So now I can't install windows. How can I get it to work?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just blew out my old tiny keyboard that came with my iMac. I went out today and bought a new full sized keyboard from Best Buy with the alphanumeric keys. I followed the instructions which read:  Setting up your keyboardPlug the USB cable from your keyboard into an available USB port on your MacChoose Apple>Software Update from the menu bar and follow the onscreen instructions. When installation is complete and you've restarted you Mac, use Software Update again to make sure all of the available updates are installed.Â
I followed these instructions, and the best that I got told is that my iTunes was out of date, which I updated. My keynboard is working (obviously, I was able to post this), but it isn't recognizing the new placement of the volume buttons and such. Â

Once I disconnect the Macbook Pro from the thunderbolt and re attache it no longer recognizes the USB keyboard (all Apple products). I restart and switch USB cable around and sometimes it works but not consistently. Considering how much money is invested in your products you would expect them to work together.

Have a iMac G5 with built in BT. I used it downstairs yesterday and took it back to the spare room where it usually is used. Fired it up today and I find that the BT mouse is fine BUT it ignores the keyboard. I tried; Replacing batteries. Checked that the suspect keyboard worked on my mac mini (it did). Tried my other BT keyboard on the iMac same problem. So, why does it recognise the mouse but not the keyboard? I do not have a USB Keyboard, so now I cannot Log in to fix it! I am guessing that the pairing has gone BUT surely it would simply see the keyboard as a new one and start setting it up. Something is stopping keyboards working with BT, very strange - could a loose BT module cause this? Or will I have to buy a USB Keyboard now to use my iMac?

I am trying to setup a simple, memorable keyboard shortcut for switching between tabs (a useful feature that I wish Safari made easier). I wanted to do option+arrow key. So I sent to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts and created the shortcut.
The new shortcut shows up in Safari when I drop down the Window menu, but the shortcut doesn't actually work. When I hit option+L or R arrow key, the window does not switch to the next or previous tab. I even went back to Keyboard Shorcuts in System Preferences and created another "All Applications" shortcut with the same command. It still doesn't work.
