Mac Pro :: Can Server Be Booted With 10.6
May 29, 2012
I am going to buy a Mac Pro Server to replace my older Mac Pro. I'm currently running 10.6 and am not ready to go to Lion for this machine - can I simply clone my existing 10.6 system and boot the Mac Pro Server off it?

How can I tell my Mac to connect to a server, once its booted?
My server does appear under the "shared" category in finder so once Im booted, I have no problem accessing it but my iPhoto is also stored under there and in order for iTunes to talk with it properly, it needs that server to be connected to when I boot and I dont want to manually connect to the server every time.
Currently, the method that I have and it works is that I just dragged the particular server folder as one of my "log in items" under system preference > Accounts > Login Items.
Only issue with it is that once booted, finder opens the window as well. Its of course really no big deal, but wondering if I can just tell my Mac to connect to it, without that window popping up.

When I first turned on my MacBook, it never booted up and ultimately the screen went blank. The battery is fully charged and now when I depress the start-up button, nothing happens. Its worth noting that when I close the lid, the sleep light turns on.

Does anyone know if the program SMC fan control will work when booted into XP via Bootcamp? I am running the game Crysis and I think my Video card may be running hot as after about three hours the game slows to around 15FPS.

When I boot into windows 7, on my iMac, the audio is muted by default. The audio works fine; no hiccups whatsoever, but it's just annoying to have it boot and be muted.

My 5 month old MacAir's fan has started making its presence felt very noisily since the past 3 weeks. This happens even when I switch on the MacAir first thing in the morning without any prior work done over several hours. The RPM monitor shows >6400.Have read the related threads but not found a solution yet.

I have first revision iMac G5 with 1.8GHz processor and 17" display, graphics adapter is NVIDIA FX 5200. Problem is that the machine seems to work only if cold booted, if I shut it down after succesful boot (after some use) and wait just little after powering it up again, it will display artifacts and/or lock up. When booted succesfully, I was able to play Halo for 20 minutes (after that I quitted) and run various benchmarks. When the machine is in "artifact mode" Apple Hardware Test says that GPU is the fault, but isn't it strange that I was able to play Halo for such a long time, 3D games are the ones which should tax the GPU and reveal flaws? Also when cold booted to AHT everything passes.Â
I know that this model suffers from bad caps and I have already replaced some of them, not all, but with no difference. I cannot look inside the power supply properly because there are security screws which require their own type of screwdriver.

I have installed windows 7 on bootcamp, and currently running max os Lion currently i am having issues accessing the mac os itself. When i turned it on and off or restart it, it always gives me a bootup screen that said Mac OS Utilities, just like the picture in this link : [URL]I tried restarting it several times, it does not boot up my Macbook, to my desktop. I trist the windows it works just fine. Then i tried recovering it 3x, which each takes 6-7 hours to do it. and it still always keep booting up the same thing over and over again.Â
i tried re-installing the OS, but its always giving me message, "this mac os lion is damaged, cannot be installed in this computer" something like that. i've been trying to fix it a day or so, it still wont boot up my Desktop.. I tried restaring it and choosing my disk "Macintosh HD" but it still gives me a recover screen. I also tried pressing the option key then choose my disk, and it still doing the same thing.Â

I've tried to boot an Ubuntu live-CD that I ordered, unfortunately all that happens is a weird unix menu comes up and tells me to choose how to boot it? I tried all the options, some left the screen offf with fans on max, others actually brought up some loading bar then the system kinda shutdown but it was still on. Anyone successfully booted Ubuntu on an iMac G5?

My first generation Mac pro booted into utilities and HD recovery when I restared after installing Autodesk sketchbook pro. This isnt the first time this has happened but last time I was not trying to install any software. Fortunatly, I have time machine backups and therefore have managed to recover the HD to a recent date and I intend to do a complete system check when it has finished.

I'm trying to recapture/repair my Entourage database on G4 Powerbook running 10.5.8. I've booted from the Leopard installation DVD, but when I try to "repair disk" Disk Utility says the disk cannot be unmounted.Â
Let me backtrack:Â I've run verify permissions and repair permissions.Â
When I run "verify disk" I could a couple of red-letter notaionsÂ
-- Invalid Extent Entry
-- Invalid Extent Entry
-- Incorrced number of file hard linksÂ
and then the conclusion:Â
-- Fileystem verify or repair failed. Â

I recently got a 750 GB WD 'My Passport' external backup drive (the USB3 version) and every time I plug it in, my MacBook Pro starts the spotlight process and then within 5 seconds kicks the drive off!
Then, it gives me the lecture dialogue of dismounting the drive correctly (via Finder for example), not to just pull the drive out of the USB port!

I have a: MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 15"(purchased just under a year ago)I sometimes wonder if my computer is running at higher temperatures than one would expect. I've heard about some laptops having heat issues because to much thermal-paste was applied. Mine normally runs at temperatures between 150-160
(currently at 121, but it just booted up and this is not the norm)When the processor is really being worked it gets to: 179-182 This seems very hot to me. Does anyone know what the expected peak temperature should be?

I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this. When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:
Disk Erase failed
Disk Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.
When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted." When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine. As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.

I recently bought a new Mac Mini with a 24 inch Philips display. When I connected the display and started up the computer, it booted up and showed the grey apple screen, but it never made it past that. On the screen it reads "cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1920x1080@60Hz." As you might have realized, I can't get onto the computer to do so because I cannot see what I am doing. This is extremely frustrating because I had my Mini hooked into my friend's tv and it worked perfectly right away and now I can't even get it to connect. Does anybody know any hotkeys/solutions to this problem?

My iMac is currently being booted from external disk via Firewire 800. I have to do this until I receive new install disks from apple to resore my machine.
The computer is usable, however internet is very slow... I have other devides, windows machine, ipad, iphone and they all run okay.
It seems that because I have booted via the external disk..... internet is slow. Could this be as the OS is needed to refer to the external disk?

I'm new to using Windows on a Mac but need to do it now for some video rendering applications that have transcoding, filtering, effects (like VirtualDub) that are only available on a PC.
I have a 17"MBP (3 months old), 2.8Ghz Duo, 4Gb RAM. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, was excited about 64-bit though I'm not an expert, I just heard it would be faster.
I didn't realize SL doesn't boot 64-bit anyhow, that you need to hold "6" & "4" at startup to get it to boot in 64bit mode. This surprised me because I figure many people assumed SL was 64bit! Just getting it to boot properly was a hassle. The 6 & 4 trick didn't work for me.
I had to edit the preference file which wouldn't save at first either because of permissions (I had to drag it to my desktop, edit it, save it, then drag it back to the folder and enter in my administrator password).
Only then did I realize my brand new eSATA Express Card didn't work in 64-bit mode. Upsetting because I just bought the hot new Sonnet Tempo card for $200 that claims to work with Snow Leopard. So until it works I'll be running 32bit mode on my Mac.
But if I want to run Windows 7, does this mean I can only run the 32bit version?

I've been having problems booting into my OSX partition. At the time it started I wasn't using my Macbook Pro (Late 2009) very often so whenever I needed I just booted up into my BOOTCAMP partition. Anyways, I decided to finally stop being lazy and do a clean install. There's nothing on either partition of the same hard drive that I want. I put together a bootable USB drive and boot from it. From here I go to the Disk Utility and try to erase the entire drive. It gives me this error: URL....
Now, that's not a screenshot from my mac but its the exact same error. Anyways, I've tried to find something on point but I just can't. Some posts have stated that the hard drive is broken, but if that's the case why can I start up the BOOTCAMP partition of the exact same drive flawlessly? I can even manipulate files on the OSX partition from Windows 7.Â

Does anyone have any words of wisdom about "migrating" from server to normal MacOS? I have decided to get out of the server environment - it is much more than I need in my little home office network. I have used the "Migration Assistant" successfully for non-server to non-server.

I'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.

I run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict. Â
Things I have Tried:
- bounced ical server
- Rebooted the server
- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)
- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars
- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores
- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes
-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.Â
The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...Â
I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal. Â
