MacBook :: Can't Access Macintosh HDD When Booted

Jun 3, 2012

I have installed windows 7 on bootcamp, and currently running max os Lion currently i am having issues accessing the mac os itself. When i turned it on and off or restart it, it always gives me a bootup screen that said Mac OS Utilities, just like the picture in this link : [URL]I tried restarting it several times, it does not boot up my Macbook, to my desktop. I trist the windows it works just fine. Then i tried recovering it 3x, which each takes 6-7 hours to do it. and it still always keep booting up the same thing over and over again.

i tried re-installing the OS, but its always giving me message, "this mac os lion is damaged, cannot be installed in this computer" something like that. i've been trying to fix it a day or so, it still wont boot up my Desktop.. I tried restaring it and choosing my disk "Macintosh HD" but it still gives me a recover screen. I also tried pressing the option key then choose my disk, and it still doing the same thing.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Access Macintosh HD

Jul 4, 2012

I just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro last two days, and today I used Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7.

I devided 250GB of my HD for Mac, and the rest for Boot Camp Windows. During Windows 7 installation I maked format the boot camp partition and resized it to 50GB so I have unallocated 450GB free space. After Windows 7 installation completed, I used Disk Management on Windows to create another new partition with FAT formatted. Then I restarted my Macbook Pro to use Boot Camp Assistant to download Boot Camp Driver due to I forgot to download at the firs time.

But I didn't see my Macintosh HD and even Recovery HD on the start up disk selection menu (Hold Option during start-up)I try all things from Apple Support page even try to recover via Internet (Command + R during start-up) and make a Lion Recovery Disk (USD Flash Drive)I have another Macbook run Lion too so I try everything that should work but it's still not work. Finally, I log on to windows and format all Macintosh Partition for a hope to clean install the new Mac OS X Lion, but it still not work.he last thing I haved tried was to exchange my new Macbook Pro hard disk with my unibody 2008 macbook and try to install new Mac OS X Lion. After completed install all new Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (.0), I put the macbook pro hard disk back to the new Macbook Pro and try to boot it but it shows up the Stop Sign.

OS X :: Don't Have Permissions To Access Macintosh HD

Aug 31, 2010

My MacBook has had song big problems, and all I can get it to do is boot up with the Mac OS X install disk, or the DVD I put ubuntu on earlier. Otherwise I get the grey screen with a folder and question mark flashing on the screen. I am unable to reinstall OS X because of the error, so we (I and a guy on this site) have worked out I need to backup my files using ubuntu, format the computer and then reinstall the OS.

I don't have an external hard drive, but I found ubuntu allows me to use my iPhone in the same way. I have backed up most of my files now, but I cannot access the main folders;
Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Music or Pictures and I get the following message:
"The Folder contents could not be displayed.

You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "_____".

Another problem is to put these files back onto my newly formatted MacBook, I will have to access my iPhone using ubuntu, and I can't put items onto the Macintosh HD because I get the message; "Error while copying to '(name)'.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restored 'Macintosh HD' Inside 'Macintosh HD'

Jul 3, 2012

After reinstall of OS X 10.7.4, I restored an older copy from Time Machine backup. I want to completely replace the current "Macintosh HD" folder with the folder that TM put inside it. I created a separate user account, that did not exist before to do it. Do I need to create a root account? Is there an easy way to copy /Macintosh HD/Macintosh HD/to/Macintosh HD/?

OS X :: Macintosh HD Permissions Changed To "no Access"

May 18, 2009

White MacBook running Leopard gets stuck at grey start up screen with spinning wheel after the Sharing & Permissions for everyone on the "Macintosh HD" was changed to "no access". I booted off of system disk and ran Verify Permissions and that gave me the message " Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit" Archive and Install failed as well. Tried booting off of Disk Warrior CD but MacBook kept restarting while holding down the C-key.

Luckily I did a back-up last week using Time Machine. But I would still like to refrain from a clean install if I can help it. There were a few new files and installs that occurred after the last back-up. Albeit not a major problem. So now I'm trying to change Permissions for the HD using Terminal. Current settings listed below.

total 12
d-wx-wx-wt@ 2 root admin 1024 May 18 06:50 .Trashes
--w--w--w- 1 root admin 4096 May 18 06:50 ._.Trashes
drwxrwx---@ 47 root admin 1666 May 18 06:57 Macintosh HD
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin May 18 06:32 Mac OS X Install DVD

But when I use the "chmod 755 Macintosh HD/" command in the Volumes Directory I get "chmod: Macintosh HD/: No such file or directory. Are their 3 spaces in that command? Or am I missing something else?

MacBook Pro :: USB3 External Drive Keeps Getting Booted

Apr 30, 2012

I recently got a 750 GB WD 'My Passport' external backup drive (the USB3 version) and every time I plug it in, my MacBook Pro starts the spotlight process and then within 5 seconds kicks the drive off!

Then, it gives me the lecture dialogue of dismounting the drive correctly (via Finder for example), not to just pull the drive out of the USB port!

OS X :: MacBook Disk Erase Failed While Booted From External HD

Aug 4, 2009

I'm booted on a MacBook Pro from an external drive, and I want to erase the drive inside the MacBook using Disk Utility from the external. For some reason or another, it won't let me do this. When I click on the Erase tab (whether clicked on the disk itself or the volume "Macintosh HD") and try to erase it, it returns with the error:

Disk Erase failed
Disk Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.

When I try to install an image onto the drive, I get a similar error, except it says "Operation not permitted." When I tried it while booted with an OS X DVD, it worked fine. As far as I know, I should be able to do this while booted from the external HD.

OS X :: Connect To Server When Booted?

Aug 8, 2010

How can I tell my Mac to connect to a server, once its booted?

My server does appear under the "shared" category in finder so once Im booted, I have no problem accessing it but my iPhoto is also stored under there and in order for iTunes to talk with it properly, it needs that server to be connected to when I boot and I dont want to manually connect to the server every time.

Currently, the method that I have and it works is that I just dragged the particular server folder as one of my "log in items" under system preference > Accounts > Login Items.

Only issue with it is that once booted, finder opens the window as well. Its of course really no big deal, but wondering if I can just tell my Mac to connect to it, without that window popping up.

IMac PPC :: G5 Works Only When Cold Booted

May 21, 2012

I have first revision iMac G5 with 1.8GHz processor and 17" display, graphics adapter is NVIDIA FX 5200. Problem is that the machine seems to work only if cold booted, if I shut it down after succesful boot (after some use) and wait just little after powering it up again, it will display artifacts and/or lock up. When booted succesfully, I was able to play Halo for 20 minutes (after that I quitted) and run various benchmarks. When the machine is in "artifact mode" Apple Hardware Test says that GPU is the fault, but isn't it strange that I was able to play Halo for such a long time, 3D games are the ones which should tax the GPU and reveal flaws? Also when cold booted to AHT everything passes.

I know that this model suffers from bad caps and I have already replaced some of them, not all, but with no difference. I cannot look inside the power supply properly because there are security screws which require their own type of screwdriver.

MacBook Pro :: Booted From USB Drive / Cannot Unmount Primary Drive To Erase

Aug 28, 2014

I've been having problems booting into my OSX partition. At the time it started I wasn't using my Macbook Pro (Late 2009) very often so whenever I needed I just booted up into my BOOTCAMP partition. Anyways, I decided to finally stop being lazy and do a clean install. There's nothing on either partition of the same hard drive that I want. I put together a bootable USB drive and boot from it. From here I go to the Disk Utility and try to erase the entire drive. It gives me this error: URL....

Now, that's not a screenshot from my mac but its the exact same error. Anyways, I've tried to find something on point but I just can't. Some posts have stated that the hard drive is broken, but if that's the case why can I start up the BOOTCAMP partition of the exact same drive flawlessly? I can even manipulate files on the OSX partition from Windows 7.

MacBook Pro :: Why Having 130 GB Of Backups On 500GB Macintosh HD

Dec 9, 2014

I've used PCs for awhile, but lately I was toying with some of my computers info and found under the "About This Mac" my computer has 130 GB worth of "Backups". I have 18GB audio which I though was a lot, and 48 GB of movies, 22GB of photos, 27 GB of apps, and 74 GB of other. Overall I have 177 GB free out of 500 GB total.

I want to clear my hard drive, what's a good way to do this? And why do I have so many "Backups"? What do these do? I use Time Machine--I don't know if that's relevant.
