View 3 RepliesMy brother is going to start school in June for Film. He is all set to buy a Mac and knows the software side of things but not so much the Hardware side.
I have a few questions:
1. Should extra hard drives be bought third party?
2. Should he do a raid setup for backups?
3. How much memory should he buy for Final Cut operations? (third party)
4. Should he look into getting a Dell monitor instead of Apple? What is a comparable Dell monitor?
5. 4-Core or 8-Core?
6. Any other knowledgeable Mac Pro buying advice
So while at a gig last night with my band, we ran a video from my computer to screens on stage. The chain looked like so:Â
MBP -> Mini-DisplayPort -> MDP/HDMI converter -> 4-way HDMI Splitter -> LCD MonitorsÂ
Now sometime during takedown, someone just decided to unplug something from my computer without consulting me or taking any proper precautions. Now my audio is stuck on Digital Output (type digital optical out). Here's what I know, and what I've tried.I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM?I have killed coreaudio a few times with no luck?I have deleted without progress:
1) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
2) com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
3) com.apple.systemsound.plist
I have restarted my computer?I have attempted to use Audio MIDI Setup?I have googled:
1) com.apple.systemsound
2) macbook pro stuck on digital out audio no red light
3) force resetting to internal audio osx
4) force reset coreaudio osx
[code]....

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use my HD Sansui 32 inch LCD TV as a monitor for my Macbook. I can't work out how to set it up properly. My macbook is running OS X 10.5.8. My TV supports 1920 * 1080 HDMI 60Htz NTSC and various other resolutions. I am using a mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a HDMI lead to the tv. Problem one is that when I switch the Macbook on and close the lid nothing comes up on the TV screen (meaning it is supposed to only driving one screen, the TV). If I do this with the VGA connection it will. Momentarily the apple symbol will come up and the little circle below it but then my TV says signal not supported.
If I have the Macbook lid open when I switch the computer on both screens will work and I can select 1080P, however it is very grainy and not pleasant to read text. I think it looks better using the VGA. I have heard of people getting nice crisp display with HDMI so I am wondering if I am missing something? Is there any other software that can be used to get better results? Which text smoothing settings should I use? Are there other settings? I am using it on my desk so I guess it is about 2 foot from me. I will post my display details in a minute but my computer details are the following:
2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SdRam
Is there a difference in picture quality if I connect a MDP to HDMI instead of a MDP to DVI from my macbook pro to my tv?Will I be able to play movies at 1080p if I use the MDP to HDMI?

1) Enabled Screen Sharing from the Sharing system panel.
2) Checked to make sure Screen Sharing is listed as being allowed to go through the Firewall.
3) Downloaded both the free version of RealVNC and UltraVNC.
RealVNC 4.1.2 gives me the following error: "No matching security types" UltraVNC 1.04 gives me the error: "Incompatible Version" Has anyone had any success connecting via VNC (w/o ARD installed) from XP? If so, what did they do and what XP VNC client?
I am a fairly new Mac user (2 months) and there is something I'd like to do that I haven't figured out how to do (or even if possible). I'd like to setup something on the Dock so that when I click on it a pop-up list displays that has all my applications and I can then click an application to start it. I have created an alias to my Application folder and have moved that folder to the Dock, but when I click on it, it opens a window that I then have to close after my application starts. I want it to work more like the Start menu in Windows (gasp).

View 8 Replies View RelatedI took the mac plunge this past week and so far I'm loving OS X. I would eventually like to upgrade the stock 250gb to a 640gb, and install the kingston 40gb ssd drive into an optibay as the dedicated boot/app drive. First, for a dual ssd/hdd system, putting the ssd in the optibay is the correct strategy right? What is the best way to attempt this switch?
If I replace both drives at once, I'm screwed because I need the optical drive to install os x, correct? So should I install a OS onto the 640 first, and then install the ssd? I'm also relatively new to time machine, so I'm not sure what its capabilities are--will i be able to only back up my applications? In the end, I'd like to be able to boot from the ssd and store videos/pics/etc in the HD.
I recently bought an express card ssd for my late 2008 Macbook Pro. I use the ssd to boot lion osx, and to boost the performance of apps like photoshop. Do to limited capacity (48gb) I need to leave some apps on the hdd. Is there a way to link to the hdd? p.s.I want the icons of the apps to show on the ssd desktop, but be stored on the hdd. Also, I found this link [url], and I had some complications with inputting the commands in terminal; the app was removed from the ssd, but did not point to the folder on the hdd.

I have been getting the following error when I try to connect to my MG5320 printer from my MacPro. I can connect with my iPhone, iPad, iPod and MacBook Pro but not my tower. I can find it when I go to Print & Scan but when I try to add I get the following error. Setting up 'Canon MG5300 series...' The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software. I have tried to download the lastest drivers and I am still getting this error.

Have looked at my iPad2 and my Macbook Pro mid 2012 as to what settings are involved to set up a VPN.I don't know which options I need to choose to do it right and therefore have not done anything yet. The basic idea is that I can securely and remotely connect to the MBP at home using my iPad2 from anywhere providing the iPad has an internet conection.

I'm trying to get Connect360 setup with my Mac and Box (I promise, I searched). When going through the setup on the Box it gives me a "Setup Key" that I'm supposed to enter when setting up the software on "My PC." I can't get past this screen on the Box. There's no where to enter this key in the Connect360 Preference Pane. When I go into settings on the Box there's an option to test the connection to the PC. This test sees my mac and the connection is successful. Just can't actually get it setup on the Mac.

SSD - system + apps
2x 1tb set up as 2tb RAID 0 - work files + home folder
1tb - Time Machine
This leaves one bay spare, but where would be the best place for my scratch disc, on the SSD? If so would a partition be the best option? Working in graphic design, mainly in Photoshop so performance is my main priority.
I have a Dlink dns-323 NAS that is also functioning as an ftp server. I have no problems writing to it from windows based machines (imagine that). My dad has a macbook pro and all of his business invoices etc. are on there and I want to setup an automated ftp backup that will run once a week. The program I am trying to work with is called Bonkey. It's fairly straightforward to setup but everytime I try to run the backup it acts like it is copying all the files but then it gives an error "unable to create directory".
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm continually upgrading my drives to larger drives. While in the time being that is fine, but my disk space usage is also increasing. Rather than replacing my 2TB drives in a year for 4TB drives (or whatever size they may be), I'd love to add more drives.
Right now I have my 'backup' drives in an 8-bay SansDigital eSATA cage. This is fine for backups, but for simplicity and drive speed sake, I'd love to just add more drives to my machine. I'm using up all 5 available SATA ports on my 2010 MP. I don't use the Optical drive much, so got to thinking: what about putting my optical drive into an external firewire/USB housing and plug it in when I need to use it. This would free up one extra drive port, which would suffice for the next 2 years or so.
So, are they are good external casing's that will allow me to use my current MP SATA optical drive? Is this method bootable, what pitfalls might I run into?
Has anyone been able to set up an http proxy in Mac os ? I want to set one up at home.

1- Anyone do a new setup via wireless? I'm going to use a Linksys wireless N and was curious on a time estimate (I know its gonna be slow...).
2- The mini has all settings under my wife's user account...if I just transfer everything as is then I'll end up with my new MBP info being under her name as well. How can I get the files and settings that are under her name to show up under mine on the new MBP?
Best way to set up my Mac pro. I have 3 Seagate 1tb drives and the stock 320gb drive installed in my system. I currently have Windows installed on the 320gb drive which I very rarely use. I have 1 1tb drive setup as my boot disk with all of my data on it. Another 1tb drive is currently used as a time machine backup of the boot disk. I just purchased and installed a 3rd 1tb drive but am trying to find out the best possible way to set things up. My intention is to slowly convert my DVDs in to digital format and store them on my mac pro. Aside from a media station I do a bit of gaming and tinker with final cut and photoshop. Any recommendations on the best way to set up these drive? I have read a bit about raid 0 and understand that improves performance and seems like a good option. If so, is it possible to set up raid 0 without redoing everything that I currently have on my first disk?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 1TB drives coming in on Monday, and I plan to put them in a mirror RAID using Disk Utility. How reliable is the OS X software RAID setup? Would I be better to just manually backup from one drive to another? The drives will be for my photography, I wanted a mirror setup so I'd finally have a backup of my (current) 250GB's of photos. (Most of which I could probably burn to DVD's but humor me.)
If the RAID crashed somehow via the software, would the data still be recoverable? I have a MP and will be putting them in Bays 3 & 4. Also, is there any benefit to the different block sizes? Since my files will all be at least 7MB would the biggest block size speed it up?

I just got a brand new MAC PRO desktop. It came with a 600GB HDD. I purchased a second identical internal 600GB HDD. I wanted to do setup a RAID 1 using these 2 drives. Currently the main drive has the OS and all my other apps installed. I installed the 2nd drive and was fooling with disk utility. I'm not sure how to set this up however. I tried numerous guides online but I just cant figure it out.
MAC PRO (takes up to 4 internal drives) - currently installed 2 identical drives
Leopard
Using Disk utility
The RAID tab says "online" and the status is green (indicating the RAID is working). However on my desktop i see the 2nd hardddrive mounted with no contents in it. I just want to able to use the 2nd drive as a mirror so this way if one fails I'm still up and running.
