Mac Pro :: How To Setup SSD And Scratch Disc

Sep 19, 2010

Looking to put a 120 SSD in my Mac pro as a boot drive but not sure how best to set up along side my HDDs. This was my planned config, but open to advice:

SSD - system + apps

2x 1tb set up as 2tb RAID 0 - work files + home folder

1tb - Time Machine

This leaves one bay spare, but where would be the best place for my scratch disc, on the SSD? If so would a partition be the best option? Working in graphic design, mainly in Photoshop so performance is my main priority.

Mac Pro :: HDD Setup / Photoshop Scratch Disk?

Nov 11, 2009

I'll be setting up my Mac Pro tomorrow and it has 3 Hard Drives.. I plan to have it set up like this

HD1 (SSD): Boot/Applications
HD2 (1TB): Data/Music
HD3 (640GB): Scratch Disk Partition or full HD for Scratch Disk?

If HD3's Scratch Disk is fine as a partition, I'll partition it 3 times for a Windows Operatin System, Time Machine, and a Scratch Disk.. is there a problem with using this drive like this for the scratch disk?

Applications :: How To Setup A Scratch Disk For Photoshop

May 24, 2009

I have a new mac pro with 4 int hard drives (the original boot drive and 3 x 1TB int hard drives).

How should I configure the the drives for photoshop scratch disk?

I intend to have the three int hard drives as a single striped RAID for all my data storage. Can I use the data storage RAID as the scratch disk or is it bad practice to have thesame disks that I'm storing files on as the scratch disk?

IMac :: Setup With SSD / HDD - Location Of Scratch / Home Folders?

Jan 5, 2011

What is Best setup for iMac with SSD and HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders?
Computer: iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I've looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):

1.I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
2.Would you do it differently or not at all about moving the home folder? I saw some posts about moving the entire home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected folders withing the home folder to take advantage of speed of SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document, music, iphoto, download, etc.) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website (**is this the same as creating an alias?):
cd
sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
sudo rm -rf Documents
sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
3.I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
4.My main question and here is where I'm not sure what's best?

I want to speed up photoshop as much as possible? Should I make a partition on the internal HDD for a scartch disk? If so, how big? Is there a benefit to partitioning for scratch disc use? Should I not partition HDD and use for data and scratch? Any other way? I wish apple had a how to maximize use of the imac with HDD and SSD page!

Dec 28, 2010

I think SSD drive with raid card is incompatible.I basically only use photoshop with very big files ( up to 800 mg with layers sometimes). and Capture One ( 34 mg RAW files )1/ I was thinking in getting a SSd drive ( vertex 2 series 120) and get another one as a scratch disk ( entirely for PS use) will 120 as a scratch disc will be enough?2/ If I just get a RAID card with my 3- 2 TB 7200 mp HD will that bit in speed the SSD workstation as I first mentioned?

OS X :: Internal Or External Scratch Disc For Photoshop?

Oct 4, 2009

I'm new to Mac and I'd like to ask a question regarding Photoshop. I have 1TB on the hard disc, which is currently designed as a scratch disc (by default), and 1Tb of external drive that I currently use for storing miscellaneous items and as a backup. I would like to ask for opinion of someone more experienced - is it better to use an internal or external scratch disc for Photoshop, and if internal, is it better to create a partition or just leave things as they are.

Final Cut Studio :: Scratch Disc Settings For Multiple External HDD Projects?

Sep 1, 2014

I have never been able to understand the setting up of scratch discs when working from multiple external HDDs? I am using final cut pro 7 to edit 2 projects at the moment, each of which are on separate external hard drives.

I was under the impression that you set the scratch disc folder on the imac itself and obviously set up the projects to direct to that folder. Is this true? Do ALL fcp projects go to same folder?

What I am also confused about is whether or not I should be setting separate scratch disc folders for each project in each external HDD? I need to take my HDDs home to use on MacBook Pro, I'm currently editing on iMac.

I set up scratch folder in one of the HDDs and finished the project and then set up new project and new scratch disc in other HDD and it appears to keep the setting for both projects!?

I have a few questions:

1. Should extra hard drives be bought third party?

2. Should he do a raid setup for backups?

3. How much memory should he buy for Final Cut operations? (third party)

4. Should he look into getting a Dell monitor instead of Apple? What is a comparable Dell monitor?

5. 4-Core or 8-Core?

6. Any other knowledgeable Mac Pro buying advice

Windows On Mac :: Full Install Leopard / SL Disc To Run Bootcamp / Update Disc?

Oct 13, 2009

Please take pity on a confused newbie. I'm running 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" Macbook with 1GB ram. My school requires me to run Bootcamp to take my exams. They told us that we need 10.5 minimum OS and must have our 'original system discs'. The installation dics that I have are for Tiger. If I buy an upgrade disc to Leopard/SL, will that contain the windows drivers I need to install after I install bootcamp? Or do I need to buy a full installation disc of Snow Leopard (since I think you can't buy the Leopard full installation anymore)? Another issue someone mentioned is that both Leopard & SL require 1BG ram minimum, which is what I have. I'm worried the os will run very slow, but I don't really have the money to buy new ram and get it install (and don't want to crack the fragile top case) now that I have to buy the new software too.

MacBook Air :: Ripping Leopard Install Disc Via Remote Disc

Jun 2, 2008

Well, my question is very simple: I have a MBA and this other laptop from work, a crappy HP which is old as hell. I'm planning to use Remote Disc to reinstall my Leopard, since the upgrade to 10.5.3 really screwed things here, and I can't figure out why. Point is: instead of running all Leopard installation thru Remote Disc, I would prefer to share Leopard disc 1 over Remote Disc and restore it to a partition on my external HD, making a clone of it, which would install *much* faster. Has anyone tried anything like this? There's any Windows program which allows me to rip a Mac DVD to a Mac partition?
