MacBook Pro :: Using OS X With An SSD Plus HDD Setup?
Mar 3, 2012
I recently bought an express card ssd for my late 2008 Macbook Pro. I use the ssd to boot lion osx, and to boost the performance of apps like photoshop. Do to limited capacity (48gb) I need to leave some apps on the hdd. Is there a way to link to the hdd? p.s.I want the icons of the apps to show on the ssd desktop, but be stored on the hdd. Also, I found this link [url], and I had some complications with inputting the commands in terminal; the app was removed from the ssd, but did not point to the folder on the hdd.

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

My brother is going to start school in June for Film. He is all set to buy a Mac and knows the software side of things but not so much the Hardware side.
I have a few questions:
1. Should extra hard drives be bought third party?
2. Should he do a raid setup for backups?
3. How much memory should he buy for Final Cut operations? (third party)
4. Should he look into getting a Dell monitor instead of Apple? What is a comparable Dell monitor?
5. 4-Core or 8-Core?
6. Any other knowledgeable Mac Pro buying advice

My new display has VGA and HDMI inputs. My MBP has DVI, so does it make a big difference between VGA setup and HDMI setup? Which setup should I go with?

I've got to setup/configure three new iPad2's on the mac that I have which is already associated with an iPad2. I know that there is a way to have iTunes not sync/backup a new iPad 2 as I've done it before, but I cannot remember how to do it.

Have looked at my iPad2 and my Macbook Pro mid 2012 as to what settings are involved to set up a VPN.I don't know which options I need to choose to do it right and therefore have not done anything yet. The basic idea is that I can securely and remotely connect to the MBP at home using my iPad2 from anywhere providing the iPad has an internet conection.

I have a late 2009 macbook pro unibody 15", I recently upgraded to the Intel SSD and just bought one of those optibays, I did not install or setup the SSD, someone else did. I am looking to use my old 500GB hitachi 5400rpm HD in the Optical drive slot, do I have to set the pins to slave since my SSD is master? What do I do when I get into mac osx? I want to erase everything and use it as a storage.

Been using Mac Towers exclusively for years and years, and I'm now thinking about adding a laptop to my setup. I've seen the specs and all, but one question remains for the *unibodies* MacBooks: how easy is it to access the battery, HD and RAM to swap them myself?

Finally home for Xmas since (remotely) buying my mother a Macbook 6.1 over Easter. I've set her up with a few utilites (Click to flash, VLC player, Coconut battery), but Im unable to get 64bit kernel to work (as it does on my 6.2 MBP).
The MB appears to meet all the criteria (64bit EFI, right processor, SL) - but neither the apple sudo terminal command, nor the 6+4 key at boot work in setting 64bit kernel. Any other suggestions?
I want 64bit because it provides improved security (NX bit in HW, less chance of exploits due to smaller market share)

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my iMAC. The iMAC backs up to Time Machine. Is using the Time Machine backup easy to setup the new Macbook?? The thought of having to install all my apps and migrate all my data sounds overwhelming and I'm hoping Time Machine makes this painless?

So for about the same cash, you can buy an 27" iMac+iPad or get a 15" MBP. I'm deliberating between the two options for my next setup. If the iPad had flash support, I would be all over the imac+ipad combo because that would mean i can watch hulu on the ipad

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro that I have used with an OWC Data Doubler. I have placed my original Toshiba drive (120gb) in the DataDoubler cage, which is what I am booting from. The new OWC SSD that I installed is a 240gb. I use this machine for video editing (using Premiere Pro CS5) and also would like to dual boot into Windows. I would like some suggestions for setup. A couple questions:Â Will it perform better if I am booting from my factory HDD slot, or is it okay that my Startup Disk is in the data doubler?Should I set up a raid? Would a striped raid allow me to NOT lose any space; from what I understand if I set up a Striped (Raid 0) array, I would have a total of 360gb of storage. If I set up a Raid 1, it would simply mirror my smallest drive, so I would be losing some space. Am I thinking this through right.Should I just scrap the raid? If so,, I would like to move my Home folder to my other drive, is this possible? Basically I would split my 240gb drive (120gb to Windows and 120gb to OSX). Then I would use the smaller drive (120gb) as my scratch disk.

I am trying to setup a Vodacom 3565-z Internet dongle on my girlfriend's Macbook Pro. She is currently in Tanzania, so I am trying to help her over the phone. It is a K3565-z Vodacom Internet dongle, and it has worked perfectly fine for the last 2 months. Now it suddenly stopped working and she un-installed the software used for logging on in her attempt to fix the problem. There are only Windows files on the USB stick now, and no internet connection. If she goes to the Network settings she can see the modem.

I use Macmail for my mac.com account and also to receive my business emails through another server. I have tried to use rules to respond with an "out of office" message but it has not gone well. The system responded to year old emails and flooded our email. I have read on some support sites about setting up through the server but I do not understand.

I have been running my macbook pro open, with a single monitor running beside it. I have come to the conclusion that I would benefit from two large monitors while working at home.
I know I need to buy the dualhead2go DP edition, but what Im not sure about is the cables I need to hook up to my monitors. I haven't yet decided what two monitors I am going to hook up to it, although they will be exactly the same and have HDMI connections.
What I am planning on doing is Getting the Dual Head 2 go, along with 2 DisplayPort to HDMI converters, and 2 HDMI cables, Correct me if Im wrong, but this should work?
Also, If anyone is currently using a dual head to go, how is the performance? I wont be doing any gaming, so that is not an issue, but for day to day tasks I assume everything will run fine? Im running the 330 in my 15' MBP.

I know a lot of people think that the MBA is intended to function as a secondary computer. However, in some light users like me, I don't see why it can't be your primary computer. So out of curiosity I want to ask the question:
Besides me, who else in this forum uses MBA as their primary computer and how is computing experience with setup so far?

I've been a bit of a PC nerd my whole life. I've always been the one who fixed my family and friends computers, tinkered with downloaded games software, overclocked, etc... I always really enjoyed a new projected because of all of the research and work it would entail, and then because I knew I was working towards the end product that I wanted.
I got my new 13" MBP yesterday and just sat down with it tonight for the first time, and in about 5 hours i've installed about a dozen big programs, made a boot camp partition, and i'm finishing installing windows 7 right now...

My current set up consists of a unibody Macbook Pro and a 20" iMac. I use my computers for video editing and watching films/tv shows. I'm considering selling my iMac and replacing it with a 24" Cinema Display. I wanted to know if anyone else has done this, and what their experience of the resulting set up s (that is, Macbook Pro and cinema display).
