I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?
Broken harddrive, dont wanna get a new internal one, I need to boot from external firewire.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a dead/dying old G4 iBook (logic board failure) and was wondering whether I can remove the internal drive and mount it in an external case, and use it as an external USB or Firewire drive? The drive has some valuable data on it which I'd like to keep, and the iBook only boots for a few minutes each time (if I'm lucky).Is it just a matter of opening it up, taking the drive out, and taking it along to a computer shop who should be able to kit me out?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a white g3 ibook dual usb. I put in a bigger hard drive and can't install tiger which is a cd not dvd that boots fine in my imac. Cd drive will not eject with eject (f12) key or fn f12. I have to pull it open manually. I can reset the nvram by booting into firmware and typing reset all. I can't boot up to a screen with a refresh arrow and a right arrow that I can click on but nothing happens. All I get a start up is a folder with a blinkin face question mark.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 2004 iBook G4. My internal HD broke yesterday, but I have a backup on an external firewire HD enclosure, made using CCC. I've tried to boot from it using the startup disk tool on the install DVD: it comes up as a useable startup disk, but when it restarts I get the blinking folder icon for a few seconds, and then it boots from the internal HD (or tries to.)
Disk utility says it is bootable, I can mount it and edit files using single user mode from the internal HD, etcetc, but it just won't boot from it.
I've even tried to go into Open Firmware and boot yaboot from the external drive, but it doesn't seem to see the drive at all until after OS X is booted.
I have an iBook G4 (1.42 ghz, 1gb - Leopard 10.5.6). I have a usb hub which has a few things plugged in (500 gb HD, mouse, ipod).
I bought a 320 gb portable hard drive. It is not recongized either through the hub or directly into either USB 2.0 ports.
I also have a G4 iMac 700 mhz. running Tiger. It does recognize the hard drive, as does my Intel iMac at work, and my friends Lenovo laptop.
i am new to this forum and everybody seams nice, but i have come over a problem, my ibook g4 1.33ghz, 512 ram, 40 GB harddrive, 12.1 inch runing leopard 10.5.6. is now not verifying my external harddrive i have a seagate freeagent pro 500 GB. it was working fine for almost a half of a year. i know that the harddrive has a 5 year worinty but i dont want to lose all my stuff on the harddrive because i have most of my stuff on there like all of my photography stuff. and it asks me if i want to verify the drive or repair the drive and i tryed both of them and it says it failed both so then its telling me to back all of the files up and erase the disk and i dont have anywere to put all my files because the internal 40 GB harddrive isnt enough space to back it all up. so what i would like to know if there is another way to do this ?

I unfortunately can't afford a new macbook (being a starving college student), and I really like the ability to advance powerpoint with the apple remote (via 3rd party software). I have a research presentation coming up at the end of the semester, and the classroom that we're in does not have remote control for presentations. My question is, is there anything that I can purchase to add this type of functionality to my iBook G4 (14" 1.24GHz 512MB).
I was actually wondering also if attaching a universal iPod dock paired with the apple remote might provide this? I'm gonna consult the Geeks at the Apple Store in Manhattan when I go on Saturday, but I'd thought I'd ask here first.
Can you add memory to an iBook G4. And can the new AirPort extreme card be installed in the same computer. It has an AirPort Extreme but I don't think its the newest one.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI managed to nab an iBook G3 for �20 and am pretty much loving it.One problem is that for bluetooth I need to use a dongle, and even with modern super teeny-weeny ones, it's a bit of a pain.Now, I know it's possible to solder the connectors to a USB port and install the dongle internally, but this also has the disadvantage of disabling the use of your USB Port.
Therefore, does anyone know if the iBook G3 (A1005, 800Mhz) has any internal USB connectors that will allow me to do this without sacrificing a USB Port? When I had it open after I got it (Had to replace a broken display cable), I had a brief look, but it wasn't very thorough.Before I crack her open again, I'd just like to see if I can save myself a lot of time and effort for a possibly fruitless search.
Saw a problem a member (steelfist) had awhile back regarding loss of sound from internal speakers. I needed to know how that was resolved since I have the exact problem on wife's ibook. Problem: Internal speaker option in sound preferences GONE all of a sudden. Only headphone option exists. Headphones sound good and so does any external speaker plugged in to that jack. But internal speakers are gone.
Tried: everything except reinstalling OS X. I've messed with opening and closing Garage Band, checked Midi defaults, tried to trip jack into not thinking headphones was plugged in - did the PRAM, power reset - no mutes on or sound lever out of balance either. Want to avoid sending unit in for repair if I can do it myself.
Need to know: Would opening the unit and unplugging / plugging the sound jack or speakers (if possible) make the system "see" the internal speakers? Or should I reinstall operating system? Just afraid of losing files.
I have a small issue on my iBook (G4) that's been driving me a bit crazy lately. I noticed a few months ago that when I selected a song/video on iTunes to play, I would get uneven volume output on my two internal speakers. I tried restarting iTunes, restarting the computer, etc. to no avail. In addition, sometimes this problem would not arise for a few days, and then suddenly start up again.
I then dug up the program Audio MIDI Setup and saw that the sliders were uneven . Once I slid them back together, I thought I had solved my problem. Nope! It came back, and I even saw that if I opened up Audio MIDI Setup right after the computer turned on, the sliders would be skewed even before opening iTunes or Safari or some other program that used audio.
I've come accustomed to manually balancing the volume output, but the irregularity of this problem occurring frustrates me. Attached is a screenshot of Audio MIDI Setup with the issue--note the Audio Output sliders.
i bought a ibook G4 off of a friend and knowning it needed some repairs it needed a new Harddrive. He had a 100Gig Seagate replaced in it before me and I tried a new 60Gig when I got it.either one of us couldnt boot either HD, we can not find the new Internal HD with the Mac. I can boot off a External HD holding down ALT. And i already tried clearing the P-ram many times.
Also when i go to load a 10.3 OSX disk it loads and either gives me a red circle X or like sorta artfacts and shifts the apple screen to the side of the page. Ive spent hours trying to fix this and have no luck. do i need a 10.4 or 10.5 disk? i did add 256MB ram to it so heres the specs. I have no clue what to do. ALSO! when i boot the external under the specs it wont show the HD under disk utilty or the about my pc info...

I have a 12" Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9 Panther. I am having problem booting my computer from a Firewire HD. I have done a search in the forum but cannot get a definite and/or successul solution. Forum moderators and my respected macrumor fellows, please feel free to direct me to a specific link if you find the questions redundant.Recently, I have had the HD making terrible noise and several days ago, the computer cannot boot at all. When I pushed the power button, the screen shows a folder in the middle with a Mac face and switches to a question mark back and forth. However, it just gets stuck at that stage. I suspected that I have a HD problem and wanted to boot from my clone Firewire HD. Unfortunately, the computer will not boot with Firewire HD either.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got an 1.33 Ghz G4 iBook logic board, given to me as a working part. However, nothing else that goes along. I do have all the basic cabling such as speaker and power button, flex cables and such. Also got myself a new external AC power adapter. Now, I do not intend to use this as a laptop, thus, I will not be looking for a battery, just AC use. However, there's a big problem, I've no screen. I know there's this software hack that allows to connect an external display, in order to have a "mirroring" desktop.
I suppose that'd be achievable if I had the original screen to actually do the hack, but I don't have it. So, is there a way that I can just directly connect an external display and completely forget about the internal one? One more thing, suppose I can't do what I have in mind, if I actually found and borrowed an internal display, would I be alright if after the hack I give the internal display back to it's owner and continue with the external?
I have an 12" iBook 1Ghz that when I run an external monitor I get no green on the external display. Could I have the wrong dongle or is this a problem with the board? Anyone seen this before?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo a friends girlfriend tossed, as in threw, her older ibook g4. You ask why? Well she was mad at it so she punched the screen and it cracked, so she gave it a quick toss because the screen cracked. So I get to be the one to try to salvage the harddrive. I have the ibook torn apart, my macbook, a macmini and an external usb IDE harddrive enclosure at my disposal.
So I tried to target it through my macbook by holding down T and booting up the ibook. Hard drive clicks and spins, but nothing mounts on my macbook. So I bought an external USB for the ibook harddrive. My macbook won't see it when connected. So does this mean a bad drive? Do the older drives have to be connected by firewire?
I have an iBook G4 which I want to use with a widescreen external display. I am not interested in gaming or doing anything fancy just surfing the web and working on documents and maybe looking at movies. I already have a hack that enables me to use a regular display which doesn't mirror the iBook screen. I just wondered whether I would encounter problems using a wide screen display and what the maximum resolution I should look for.

The difference is, that opposed to him, I am in fact using Garage Band to create a podcast. I am also using an external mic. And even though the external mic gets recognized by my ibook G4, it is for some reason not allowed to record. (Yes, my ibook recognizes it, however, the ibook won't pick up any minor sound with the external microphone. A person at a small recording studio here in my city made me realize this, as I thought the problem was other).
P.S. By the way, I had already tried two options and neither one worked out. For option number one, I used as preamp a product called iMic, in addition to the external microphone and the ibook G4. For option number two, I used the same products mentioned in option number one, plus an additional pre amp. The "success" was the same as before: recognition by the ibook G4, with the problem that one can not record into the ibook.
