View 2 RepliesI recently found some ram on ebay for $2.00 (2 512MB PC100 sticks for a buck each) but they are for Dell Poweredge.
My question is even though they are Dell Poweredge Ram ad since the specs for the RAM match that of the iMac G3, can I still use them in the iMac G3?
Here are the specs for the RAM:
Brand: Dell / Viking Components
Dell P/N: 6084D
Capacity: 512MB
512MB ECC PC100Mhz
Speed: PC-100MHz
Type: 168-Pin SDRAM
My professor uses her macbook pro along with her apple remote to advance her slides. I unfortunately can't afford a new macbook (being a starving college student), and I really like the ability to advance powerpoint with the apple remote (via 3rd party software). I have a research presentation coming up at the end of the semester, and the classroom that we're in does not have remote control for presentations. My question is, is there anything that I can purchase to add this type of functionality to my iBook G4 (14" 1.24GHz 512MB).
I was actually wondering also if attaching a universal iPod dock paired with the apple remote might provide this? I'm gonna consult the Geeks at the Apple Store in Manhattan when I go on Saturday, but I'd thought I'd ask here first.
On CanadaRAM's website for the EMac (usb1.1) the 512 mb sticks come in certified and kingston. Is the certified okay to go for? As the price different is rather large. I am thinking certified will be just fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a G5 quad with the pci-e slots. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7800GT already in the machine, and just picked up an ATI Radeon x1900 Mac edition to run a couple more monitors. The problem I'm running into is how do I supply power to the second card since the only 6 pin pcie connector I can find on the mainboard is going to the 1st video card? Does a splitter exist, or if I spliced two cables together would enough amperage be supplied? Both cards run off of a mini 6 pin pcie to standard 6 pin pcie cable. This may be a crazy alternative, but I've got a pc I always run right alongside the mac that has a couple extra pcie power connections available. Could I run a power cable out of the pc and connect it to the Radeon card in the G5? I saw an older thread where about midway down someone mentions successfully adding a radeon 1900 as a second card in the G5, but it never mentions the power connections. [URL]
View 4 Replies View Relatedi added a 2nd optical drive (Pioneer 115D) to my mdd dually 1.25 G4. BUT, i'm sure I didn't do it right. Sure, it recognizes the drive, but I put them on the same bus (Ata-33). I should have them on separate bus', but I have 2 hd in the rear ata-100 drive carrier and 1 in the front ata-66 carrier. Can anyone tell me how to effectively put them on separate bus'? is there a website with specific directions on how to do it this way? The reason why I was told to keep them on diff. bus' is b/c they won't function as well (data lockups b/c same bus can't handle data).
View 2 Replies View RelatedCan you add memory to an iBook G4. And can the new AirPort extreme card be installed in the same computer. It has an AirPort Extreme but I don't think its the newest one.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet Dual 450 MHz and I had the following memory installed:
(3) 128K PC-133
(1) 512k PC-100
This has worked for me for years but thought it was time to upgrade to the max at 2GB. So I went online and bought (3) 512k PC-133's from ebay (see spec on new memory below). When I installed the memory, in System Profiler the 3 new chips are showing empty. I know they are seated properly in the slots. The configurations of the chips are:
Original 512k PC-100 in DIMM0/J21 (shows fine in profiler)
New 512k PC-133 in DIMM1/J22 (shows empty in profiler)
New 512K PC-133 in DIMM2/J23 (shows empty in profiler)
New 512k PC-133 in DIMM3/J24 (shows empty in profiler)
Is there something I am missing? Below are the specs for the new memory chips I bought:
Gold Pin 168PIN 6Layer memory
Type: SDRAM
Capacity: 512MB DIMM
Speed: PC 133 133FSB / 133MHz
Density: Low Density
Pins: 168 Pin
ECC/Registered: No/No
Volt: 3.3V
CAS Latency: CL3
Unbuffered, DIMM 1 Bank
I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?
I may be coming across a Dual 1.8 G5 (M9454LL/A) and just wanted anyones opinion. I was wondering how expandable this thing is in terms of adding another internal hard drive...also are there any limitations this machine has in general (i already have an intel mac so this would be a second computer)?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was wondering. A friend of mine has a Emac 700mhz equipped with a 56k modem. She has an "intermediary" speed internet connection. With that, she can't really view a video - let's say from Youtube. It just keeps hanging. She only has 256mg of RAM which can be boosted to 1G, and I was wondering if by doing so, it would have a significant impact on her Emac capacity to view such content.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerbook G4 that I wanted to upgrade to 1.5G from 512MB. So I added Corsair 1GB DDR RAM to the notebook and it seems to have issues recognizing both at the the same time. When I put both of them in together, it never seems to recognize the bottom slot. Putting in the 512MB in the bottom w/o the 1GB the Powerbook boots up fine. Putting in the 1GB by itself and it gives beeping noises on bootup, but it'll boot up if I put it on the top slot.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter doing some research today I still have a few basic questions about RAID arrays that I was hoping someone could answer.
1) Could I form a RAID 1 set using only two external HDDs, of the exact same capacity, make and model, and a MacBook with OS 10.5? That is, would I only need to connect the laptop to the external HDD enclosures, and the enclosures to each other, with the relevant cables and the software would do the rest?
2) I kept coming across the warning that a RAID array is redundancy and NOT a backup system. This seems simple enough: a file deleted accidentally on the source drive is deleted on the RAID array. So would I be right in saying that a RAID array along with a system running, say Carbon Copy Cloner with its archival backup, would provide both backup and redundancy?
It's not an issue as such, more of an annoyance (when trying to keep things tidy and organised) but on all 3 of my external HDD's a folder 'Desktop' keeps appearing. It's empty on all drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a MBP (see signature) and two Freecom 500GB USB external Hard Discs. Is it possible to somehow set up these two HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration under OS X. The reason for this is that right now I have a large collections of films on the one of the HDD and would hate to loose them all if the disc failed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two partitions of the same drive on the desktop and I only want one volume to show up. Is it possible?
I've tried a . in front but it won't let me do it.
I have a Mid-2007 MBP... I upgraded it to a 500gb HDD some time ago and I'm currently running 10.6.2.
If I were to buy a new MBP (hopefully a Core i5 one if/when they come out), would it be possible to simply swap the HDD from the old MBP into the new one?
I'm aware that Time Machine and/or imaging products like Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper are ways of achieving the same thing, but I'm interested whether the physical hard drive swap would work in theory.
Generally speaking, is it healthier for the HDDs to remain spinning most of the day
Or have them spin down after x minutes idle, but spin up at least ten times a day when I need to access them (or use spotlight for any reason)
I've tried searching the forums and extensively on google as well. I can't seem to find anything that solves my particular problem. I just purchased an AEBS from the apple store a few days ago so it's probably the latest model. I've since purchased a powered USB hub so that I can connect my three external wireless drives to it. For some reason the base station will only detect 2 drives at once. If I have all three connected at the same time it will still only detect the most recent two of three connected.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a mid 2007 Macbook Pro, 2.4GHz, 4GB Ram, 160GB HDD. My iPhoto library has been slowly taking up all of my disk space, currently almost 80GB worth. So I decided to get another external HDD to temporarily move it to until I replace the Macbook Pro's HDD.
So I initially purchased two 1TB drives, one a WD My Book, and one a SimpleTech. I hooked them into my powered USB hub along with my two other 500GB external drives, and started formatting the first one while zeroing it out (as per instructions on a site about how to set up a RAID mirror). It said that it would take 16 hours, so I came back the next morning and the format had failed. I tried to redo it, but it would not work. The error is:
Disk Erase Failed
Disk Erase failed with the error:
File system formatter failed.
Next I tried to format the other drive, and got the same error. Both drives were unreadable by OSX (they were initially formatted for Windows). So I thought that maybe putting 4 drives on the USB hub may have maxed it out? Finally, I purchased another drive, a 1.5TB Free Agent, and tried to format that. Same problem as the others.I am just not sure what to do?I should mention that I am down to only 700MB of disk space, after having moved all my Documents to an external HDD, so things are really thin. Could the low disk space have an effect on the formatting?
I want to upgrade the HDD on my macbook pro and I need some help on compatiblity issues - is it compatible with a SATA300 or the SATA150?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat connection type would you choose when buying a new external hard drive?USB 2 isn't very fast, but Apple seems to be de-emphasizing Firewire and eSATA isn't even an option on anything except the Mac Pros AFAICT.

So I want to get new MBA. But going from 500gb hdd MB, will need to set up wireless HDD for my pictures and music. Is it best to do all of it on one external hdd or can I mix n match say podcasts n my favorite pictures on internal hdd n the rest on the external?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a new 300 gig external hdd for $70. It is pretty sweet. I formatted it with fat32 so I could transfer files quickly between my Mac and PC. I began to transfer my files from my old 250 gig drive. When it would come across an especially large file, over 4 gigs, it would stop and give me error -1309. What gives? I suspect it may be a problem with the fat32 however I don't know. I might have to reformat it for mac only, but I really don't want to do that since I have a USB and fw800 drive. Does ntfs work for Mac? Or is there any other format that works well and supports large files?
View 4 Replies View Relatedsorry for the cryptic thread title, didn't know how to describe this in a few words:
Some time ago I read somewhere here that RocketRAID cards alter drives attached to them in a way that makes the drives not recogniseable to other SATA chipsets/ports. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find that thread again.is that (still) true?I'm asking because I'm planning on some drive juggling in the near future and don't want to be negatively surprised.
I'm saving up to buy a 13" MBP come next refresh and am planning to upgrade the internal HDD to the Hybrid Seagate XT drive.
Is it safe to assume the XT will still work with the newer laptops due to the size/connector being standard?
I'm thinking of getting the HDD ahead of time so when I do get the MBP I have it ready to go.
I just discovered that even though external drives can be backed up with Time Machine, Time Machine won't let you restore files from them if they fail. You can only restore files from a secondary drive if that drive is mounted, which is impossible if that drive has failed.

I currently have 1 PC (Windows7) and 1 MBP (Snow Leopard) in the house, the PC has 2 additional HDDs attached with movies and music on them and they are in NTFS format. I can view the contents on my PC via my wireless G network on my Macbook through sharing etc. Now my problem is that I'm getting rid of the PC (hopefully for an iMac in the future) but right now what sort of device would I need to build/buy to attach the 2 NTFS HDDs to the network so my MBP can still access the media on them?
