I may be coming across a Dual 1.8 G5 (M9454LL/A) and just wanted anyones opinion. I was wondering how expandable this thing is in terms of adding another internal hard drive...also are there any limitations this machine has in general (i already have an intel mac so this would be a second computer)?

I just plugged in my second ATA hard drive into my mac g5(dual 2.5) I now want to copy everything on my original harddrive onto the harddrive I just put in. HOW? Everyone keeps telling put just click copy everything, and Im aware of that. But whhere do I copy it to? It says "New Disk Image or Choose Disk Image" I cant find my other hard drive in either of those options. My source disk is my original hard drive but I do not know how to target my new drive.

(3) 128K PC-133
(1) 512k PC-100
This has worked for me for years but thought it was time to upgrade to the max at 2GB. So I went online and bought (3) 512k PC-133's from ebay (see spec on new memory below). When I installed the memory, in System Profiler the 3 new chips are showing empty. I know they are seated properly in the slots. The configurations of the chips are:
Original 512k PC-100 in DIMM0/J21 (shows fine in profiler)
New 512k PC-133 in DIMM1/J22 (shows empty in profiler)
New 512K PC-133 in DIMM2/J23 (shows empty in profiler)
New 512k PC-133 in DIMM3/J24 (shows empty in profiler)
Is there something I am missing? Below are the specs for the new memory chips I bought:

I feel incredibly dumb but can you buy something to put inside an ibook (or any laptop for that matter) to give you more space to save things? or do you have to buy an external drive? I can see lots of info about memory upgrading (which makes your computer more efficient yeah?) but nothing about this, is this because it's so obvious that I should know?
How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi added a 2nd optical drive (Pioneer 115D) to my mdd dually 1.25 G4. BUT, i'm sure I didn't do it right. Sure, it recognizes the drive, but I put them on the same bus (Ata-33). I should have them on separate bus', but I have 2 hd in the rear ata-100 drive carrier and 1 in the front ata-66 carrier. Can anyone tell me how to effectively put them on separate bus'? is there a website with specific directions on how to do it this way? The reason why I was told to keep them on diff. bus' is b/c they won't function as well (data lockups b/c same bus can't handle data).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was shocked to see that my hard drive was close to full last night when I checked on its capacity. Mainly because I just wiped clean a month ago and reinstalled with the current version of Mavericks. It would appear that my problem lies within a massive amount of storage used classified as "other". My HD holds 320 GB and of that, "other" is taking up 161 GB along with my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps taking up a combined 120 GB. This leaves me with about 40 GB left of free space.
I am unable to pinpoint the location of these "other" files. Totaling up the four subfolders in my HD (System, Library, Users and Applications) only amounts to 120 GB which can be traced back to my Audio, Movies, Photos and Apps. This leaves 161 GB floating around used somewhere that I haven't the slightest clue of where it is. I have used Grand Perspective and a disk space analyzer from the app store and they both only recognize 120 GB being used by the hard drive.
To make things a little more interesting, when I first noticed this "other" issue, it was taking up 145 GB and over the course of an hour or so after multiple restarts it has worked its way up to the 161 GB it is at now. Is there some type of glitch here?
I have tried restarting in Safe Mode to reset any stuck processes, but that didn't work either. I have searched similar problems but most people have found massive log files which they were able to pinpoint using a disk analyzer.
With a clean wipe and reset only a month ago, how can the "other" be this big already?

Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm on Tiger 10.4.11, and the latest iTunes. I have an external hard drive on which I keep all my music files, managed by iTunes. I'm running out of room on that drive. At some point, it is not practical to keep increasing the size of the drive, as the reliability goes down. I'd like to keep my drives to 1TB or so. So, the other solution is to add a second external hard drive, where all new music files can go to. How to do it, so iTunes doesn't freak out? Here's what I'm thinking - could you guys help make it work?
I thought to add the second drive and then in iTunes preferences -->Advanced---> iTunes Music folder location CHANGE to the NEW drive. That way, I'd have iTunes copy all new music to the NEW DRIVE. Question: Now, how do I go about having iTunes reference files on the FIRST drive, so that the Library is up to date, and when I select something to play from the FIRST drive, iTunes knows how to find it?
A "start-up disk is full" message popped up suddenly. I safe booted up, and cleared off 2 GB of stuff, and thought I was good. But then, I noticed the space available started to shrink rapidly, and the hard drive was full again. Now I can't even safe boot it up.

View 15 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
Okay here's the thing: I (not so long ago) copied my entire itunes library to my external hard drive. Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.
Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?
Hey guys, sorry this may seem like a basic question but here goes. There are many, many pages, websites and videos on how to install a hard drive into the MP, no problems there what my question is, is what's next?
The HDD is arriving Tuesday, once I have installed what will I have to do to it to make it a part of my current HDD. I assume Im looking at a RAID 0 using disk utility?
Before I do that will I have to install 10.5 on the HDD or just use disk utility to format it?
So I had some issues with my system and finally decided it was best to get a new hard drive and reinstall osx. When I did this though, my second internal hard drive became locked. I have gone into the Get Info for the drive and it has the Privilege set to Custom. I unlock the lock in the lower right corner and try to change custom to Read & Write, but it does not make the change. I am at a loss on where to go from here.

Also, which I havent noticed before, the icon of the drive has a small silver lock in the lower left corner. This is the icon on the desktop itself.
I have MBP 17", 2,53GHz, hdd is 250GB. I have a lot of music and pictures and quite lot movies. On the other side I have a lot mails. Is it better to make two partitions and keep them separate? What is your suggestion? If I decide to do that, do I need to remove everything from hard drive to make another partition? I never did it before on mac, but I remember that is necessary on windows.
