I couldn't find a "Mail-specific" forum, so will post here for help. I’m running an older version of Mail (2.1.3) on a PPC G4 MacMini with OS 10.4.11. I have two IMAP accounts feeding into Mail, one my Apple iCloud account, and the other my work Exchange account. All seems to be working fine, but I have a question about the outgoing mail server settings. For iCloud, the outgoing mail server seems to have been automatically set as “smtp.me.com” and it uses Server Port 587 with SSL and Password authentication. For my work Exchange account, after lots of trial and error, it uses Server Port 25. Why does one use 587 and the other 25 as a Server Port? Is this OK from a security standpoint? I really have no understanding whatsoever of this stuff.

Installed Snow Leopard on Friday, and I'm only having one problem: Firefox is ignoring the scroll wheel on my Logitech LX3 Optical Mouse. The OS and all other apps seem to be fine. I followed a tip on [URL] to reinstall the Logitech Control Center, but it didn't fix the problem. I plugged in my Mighty Mouse, but it won't scroll either. I can scroll inside a textarea, but not the main Firefox window. Scrolling worked fine before the Snow Leopard upgrade.

So I finally bit the bullet and reinstalled Leopard...I'm liking 10.5.2 much better now that I can have my list view back in dock folders...
but I've discovered a very, very stupid "enhancement" to Spotlight that makes it completely useless for the thing I most frequently Spotlightfile names.
Yes, I am serious. Leopard ignores file names if it doesn't think they are important to the search criteria.
A good example? I have a folder with all of my company's product shots in it, listed by "UPC number.jpg" so basically, things look like 135246528543.jpg or something similar. We're talking 10,000 UPC-labeled product images.
I build worksheets and catalogs and things like that using these files all day long, and the best way I've found to get the product I want is to create a new box in InDesign or Quark or whatever app I'm using, and then use the menu command to get an image. I have the UPC images folder in my finder tray, so i click on that to center my focus on that one folder, and then I would use the little Spotlight search field to search for the last 4-5 digits of the product's UPC that I need to place. I typically do a couple dozen of these at a time, but I've got a spreadsheet and it only takes a couple of minutes to get all of the images loaded into a layout.
now that's what I would do in 10.4.
When I try to do this in 10.5, I find that unless I type in the ENTIRE UPC code, starting with the very first number and all the way to the last of the 12 digits, I get 0 results for the same search. I can open the file in a finder window and stare at it, and then open a spotlight search for it and nothing shows up. Curious to see if I was not indexing something properly, I poked around and discovered that the new leopard Spotlight by default doesn't consider filenames an important search criteria, and that you have to go into the spotlight window and click the little "+" button to add "filename" "contains" to the search criteria for that spotlight window. You can check a little "always appear" box next to this, and then if you want to find a file by its filename, you use that text entry point instead of the regular search text box and it will find the files just fine.
Now, aside from the fact that this logic is stupid and backwards and completely counter-intuitive, (why is spotlight trying to deduce which files i might really want to see and hiding from the the ones it doesn't see as important enough? even if that's the default behavior, why can't i just click a "always show all results" checkbox in the spotlight preferences to change this?), it is killing my productivity for one simple reason:
The custom changes you make to the spotlight search bar (adding "filename" for example, as a default search option) don't carry over into the "open" and "save" dialog boxes in applications!
You can go in and hit the plus button each time you want to search for a file name, then scroll down through the list of a billion possible search criteria, then select "contains" because it isn't the default argument, and THEN type the 4-5 numbers of the UPC that will narrow it down to a single file, but that isn't exactly fast, now is it?
So my work-around is to minimize the document, open a custom, separate search window, and then drag-drop the results into the app. Maybe if I had more monitors this wouldn't be such a pain, but there was a very good system in place before and now it is broken. The only problem with 10.4's implementation of this function was that if there was only 1 search result, you still had to click on it to select it before you could hit "enter" and have it open in the document. If there is only one search result, it should at least highlight it for you by default...
so i was hoping that 10.5 would do that, because in the menubar it does (highlights the top hit) and I think users of quicksilver can attest to the usefulness of this.
My post's purpose is this: to complain about this broken feature and to ask for any possible work-arounds other than the back-asswards one I described above. requiring you to type in the entire file name before the search results will show anything is the opposite of a smarter search.
And to those who say "just use EasyFind" I ask you, does it integrate with Open/Save dialog windows? If not, then it doesn't really take the place of Tiger's Spotlight.

I have a server in our DMZ that connects to Active Directory LDAP server (non-ssl over 389) but no objects actually show up in the directory editor. I get a green light in my Network Account Server, but queries against LDAP return no results. My end goal is to be able to dictate to Profile Manager what LDAP groups are allowed to enroll devices. I tested on our internal network on a test server and get the same results. Anyone have any luck connecting a Lion Server to LDAP and actually being able to view and utilize users and groups?

I have a Unibody MBP (Late '08 - first model) running Snow Leopard. After the installation of SL and the upgrade to 10.6.1 (which I did in the same days), I have problems with my trackpad.
Basically, every once in a while the system ignores hard clicks for some minutes: if I tap it, the click is registered. If I press it down the click is not registered.
I do not think it's hardware-related: nothing happened and the noise/pressure/feeling are the same as before. Is there anyone else with a similar problem?

I recently updated my Server running 10.7.0 to version 10.7.3 and single-sign-on no longer works for my users. The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message
I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.

I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.
When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped). The common name and the DNS name are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)

Since installing Filemaker Server 12 on our Lion Server 10.7.3, the Webmail is no longer working. I know with previous installations of Filemaker Server I have been asked whether I wanted to keep the system version of PHP or install PHP which comes with Filemaker Server, but I don't recall being prompted about it on this occasion. Previously I had always opted to retain the system PHP.
[code]...
And from the WAN I get just a screen saying webmail is turned off and that I can turn it on by using the Server app on the server (It is already checked in the server app).

With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>
[code]....
ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

not quite so dire if you clicked this wondering ??? And why is this bing posted on Server forum? Well it happens to be on a server and I am trying to iron out what happens when you completely trash the system and start over. This problem occured in a subdirectory on one folder. It (the triangles ->) are there for all the other folders. However, there is one folder I had on a backup (backup, meaning still being a previous version of Lion) that at one point that any group of folders I place into it. there is no browsing triangle that lets you go down furthur. Yes you can open the folder and go further in, so its not prefs that I am aware of.
At this level...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. (Must say in Cookie Monster voice if you've watched the "Cookies done yet" bit you might giggle or at least be mildly annoyed.)
If you browse from this part of the hierarchy you get the expected behavior...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. however if you open the folder here is what you get...Triangles Here Still? (uh oh).
[Code]...
Anyway, sorry for the "less professional" candor of this post, but I have kids and a wife, and they think I am boring at times, and I love them - and while I am struggling with this, I am thinking of them, and obviously not with them. Ok Universe, this is where I need you the most: I'm counting on you do to something or say something to make it all better. Ok...Go

I know this issue is kind of old, but there are so many flavors of it, that it is hard to find exact match. I've been having problems with single account, and it happens that this account has admin rights. Emails get pulled/deleted from user's mailbox within 10 secs after arrival. There are no other devices that may be pulling those emails, however, I've noticed something strange in the logs:
Jun 4 13:47:43 osxserver dovecot[173]: imap-login: Login: user=<xxxx>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=192.168.0.123, lip=192.168.0.123, mpid=406, secured
I don't know if this event is normal to run on server itself, but seems it runs only for this one account that I'm having problems with. There is no imap client setup on that server, and based on my time stamps observations I'm pretty much convinced that's what's deleting my emails.

The girlfriend and I are consolidating machines and want to try a software based approach instead of a plug and swap approach. My goal is to have only a Desktop + iPad and she have her MacBook. The issue is that we also want to keep it limited to one monitor, etc. on the desk but she is in grad school and will have need for the larger screen and keyboard. My question is can I set up her laptop to use a Mobile Account and assuming she logs off on that before going onto the Server, can she then log in to the Server desktop and use that Mobile Account locally there? So sometimes use the Mobile Account on the laptop, Sometimes on the Desktop. From my days managing a small network, this seems plausible but could also be fraught with problems.
