Jun 13, 2012
After migration, I restarted my computer and it won't recognize my trackpad and keyboard. It's stuck on the Sign-In screen.

I have a Maxtor One Touch 4, 250 GB external hard drive, used for PC backups with about 230 GB of data. I have connected it to my iMac, using the USB 2.0 interface cable, and I can see all the folders and files on the drive through Finder. I can even open them up with Office for Mac, etc. However, I want to migrate these files onto my iMac using Migration Assistant, but Migration Assistant cannot find the drive it seems. It just sits there spinning forever, and never finds the drive.

Using Migration Assistant, I'm trying to transfer back-up files (whole system) from my Western Digital, External HDD to a new-to-me iMac which I've just purchased used. The External HDD has all my files (hopefully!) from my recently stolen iMac. As you can imagine, the circumstances are a bit unexpected and unsettling.
I've followed Apple's instructions for using MA with an external drive, but get hung up like others before me when it comes time for my new (used) computer to locate the disc from which to transfer the files. I've read the replies to others who have posted with similar difficulties using Snow Leopard, but resolving the issue seems to be just out of reach. Â
Original computer is now unavailable (stolen); it last ran on Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 to 6.8.New computer is used, and also runs on 10.6.8.Both computers are iMac 2009, tho slightly different versions, if that has any bearing on things.I created a temporary account on my new-to-me computer to make the data transfer, so that there wouldn't be an accounts conflict, as others have suggested.Western Digital External HDD, "My Book, Studio Edition," 1TB. I'm using the FireWire 800 port on the iMac. If I need to erase the hard drive on my "new" computer, I'll need a little instruction and hand-holding on that one.Â

I just blew out my old tiny keyboard that came with my iMac. I went out today and bought a new full sized keyboard from Best Buy with the alphanumeric keys. I followed the instructions which read:  Setting up your keyboardPlug the USB cable from your keyboard into an available USB port on your MacChoose Apple>Software Update from the menu bar and follow the onscreen instructions. When installation is complete and you've restarted you Mac, use Software Update again to make sure all of the available updates are installed.Â
I followed these instructions, and the best that I got told is that my iTunes was out of date, which I updated. My keynboard is working (obviously, I was able to post this), but it isn't recognizing the new placement of the volume buttons and such. Â

I have recently purchased a 24" intel iMac (latest revision) running Mac OSX 10.5.6. I tried to transfer the user account from an older computer upon initial startup using the built-in migration feature, but it failed and reported that "there are no versions of mac os x available on your old mac," which is obviously not the case, as I am trying to transfer from an old white PowerPC iMac (with the hemisphere swivel base) running Mac OSX 10.4.11. All the correct procedures were followed using a firewire 400 to 800 cable.
I then found somewhere that it is wise to try to create an account on the new computer and then try to use migration assistant to transfer the account. I tried this several times, and every time the new computer did not recognize the older mac, and just left it searching (all the correct procedures, such as holding down the T key during restart on the old computer, were followed. The old computer has the firewire symbol floating around on the screen as it should).
I also tried the network option, where the new computer gives a number to type into the old computer, thereby linking the computers. This also was unsuccessful and just reported that a network error occurred.
On one of my latest firewire attempts I was given a message on the new computer that stated "Your old mac might not be able to connect to this one using Firewire" What?
Does this mean I'm screwed? How do I transfer my old account to my new computer? Please let me know if you need additional information on the situation.

I upgraded to a 60gb SSD and also have a 1tb sata for the data. My problem is getting migration assistant to recognize the sata drive so I can transfer my user files from my time machine backup. I successfuly got the system and applications to my ssd in migration assistant. I also switched my home folder over to the sata with a guide I found on google. How do I get my user files to the sata if migration assistant can't recognize the drive.(drive is listed as internal in about this mac)

I am having a really strange problem with my MBP (Stats are in my Sig) running 10.6.1. Whenever I start or restart my computer, the keyboard and track pad click are unresponsive at the login/password screen. The computer recognizes them and eventually enters them but the delay is almost 2 minutes long! I have logged out without restarting and I do not have this issue. I have tired repairing permissions, and resetting PRAM. I am thinking about an Archive and Install.

I have a really annoying problem with my macbook pro. Often (maybe 40-50% of the times) when i click some text field (on a webpage in Chrome or Safari, or in Finder's search field - actually any text field on my mac) and start to write something, nothing happens. Then if i use my trackpad and CLICK on the text field, all of the letters which i wrote, suddenly appears. The same thing happens with scrolling (in Apple's Preview app, browsers, finder etc.). Sometimes when i try to scroll, nothing happens. If i then click anywhere inside the window, it scrolls. Same thing happens with gestures if i use Preview to view a pdf in fullscreen. If i use 3 fingers swipe to browse to another page, nothing happens. If i click anywhere it immediately go to the other page. Is this software or hardware related? I'm thinking software, unless it has something to do with my trackpad. It's a 13" Macbook Pro (2.3 i5)Â

While trying to fix my disabled USB ports on my MBP, (Installing some sort of USB driver that wasn't made for my specific OS, which is 10.7.4, which came from the apple website.) I rebooted my computer and I notice that once the loggin screen shows up the cursor won't budge. Then I try hitting Enter on my mac and the arrow keys a little. Nothing. Then I try using every key on the keyboard. Absolutely nothing. Tried resetting the PRAM, SMC, AND tried using Safe Boot. Nothing. At this point I wanted to smash my computer or smash something technology related. The only thing that works on my computer now is the little slim of hope that I call Windows 7 which I am posting this from.Is there ANYTHING I can do to enable my Trackpad and Keyboard again?

I re-installed lion on my new mini to get to Setup Assistant to transfer files from my older iMac. The transfer went well, I think. However, I cannot login. I have tried no password (the way the old iMac was set up). I have tried every password that I can think of including my Apple ID password. I did not set up any password for the new computer, but it did offer a hint for a password that it wiil not accept. How in the world did it come up with a password with out my consent? and how can I access my new computer?

I've started installing XP onto my iMac, and it's at the screen where it asks what partition it should be installed on. In order to select a partition, I'm supposed to use the arrow keys on my keyboard, but my keyboard doesn't seem to be recognized by the installer, as well as other keyboards I've tried. So now I can't install windows. How can I get it to work?

Once I disconnect the Macbook Pro from the thunderbolt and re attache it no longer recognizes the USB keyboard (all Apple products). I restart and switch USB cable around and sometimes it works but not consistently. Considering how much money is invested in your products you would expect them to work together.

Have a iMac G5 with built in BT. I used it downstairs yesterday and took it back to the spare room where it usually is used. Fired it up today and I find that the BT mouse is fine BUT it ignores the keyboard. I tried; Replacing batteries. Checked that the suspect keyboard worked on my mac mini (it did). Tried my other BT keyboard on the iMac same problem. So, why does it recognise the mouse but not the keyboard? I do not have a USB Keyboard, so now I cannot Log in to fix it! I am guessing that the pairing has gone BUT surely it would simply see the keyboard as a new one and start setting it up. Something is stopping keyboards working with BT, very strange - could a loose BT module cause this? Or will I have to buy a USB Keyboard now to use my iMac?

I am trying to setup a simple, memorable keyboard shortcut for switching between tabs (a useful feature that I wish Safari made easier). I wanted to do option+arrow key. So I sent to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts and created the shortcut.
The new shortcut shows up in Safari when I drop down the Window menu, but the shortcut doesn't actually work. When I hit option+L or R arrow key, the window does not switch to the next or previous tab. I even went back to Keyboard Shorcuts in System Preferences and created another "All Applications" shortcut with the same command. It still doesn't work.

I have a Mac Mini 2006 with Core Duo 1.66Ghz and an 80GB HDD. I use this computer as a Media Centre PC (not really nesecarry information). The 80GB hard drive has died in this machine. I know this because I took the drive out, formatted it, reinstalled it in the mini and attempted to install snow leopard from a boot disk. It gets to about 60% and then throws an error - clearly the drive is about to die. Â
In my wisdom, I opened the Mini up and replaced the hard drive with a drive from an old (but dead) windows laptop. When I did so and rebooted, I connected a USB keyboard and held down the option key on boot to boot into startup screen (to select the the boot disk I had made). The SL boot disk on a USB key which is recognised when I boot it on another mac. The mini seems not to recognise the keyboard input when holding down the option key. The mac booted straight into Windows which was on the new drive. It booted into the windows "windows did not boot correctly last time, do you want to start up in startup mode?) screen. The keyboard inputs were also not recognized on this screen.Â
I thought that there may have been an error because windows was on the drive, so I scrubbed the drive and re-installed it as a completely blank drive in the Mini. Again attempted to get to the startup screen and again the same problem. Only this time I am getting a flashing folder with a question mark (meaning the mini cannot detect any bootable drive presumably). The USB stick is flashing, but to me the Mini cannot recognize the keyboard input from the connected keyboard. Could the USB ports have somehow been damaged? Also through this process, I have reset the P-RAM on the mini as well. Â

When my laptop stopped recognizing my external keyboard and mouse I searched the discussions and found an answer that has worked, but only temporarily. It was to do a PRAM reset 3 times and when I do this the keyboard and mouse work fine. But when I disconnect the mouse and keyboard and then later reconnect it will not recognize them. I have repeated the PRAM reset 3 times each time this has happened (4 times) and they work fine but then there is always a problem when I disconnect and reconnect.Â

I am using Apple Remote Desktop to control a Mac OS X Snow Leopard system with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard system. On the computer being controlled, I launch Windows 7 through Parallels Desktop Mac version 6. Once the VM is launched, for some reason it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard as it will not allow me to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I can use Ctrl-Alt-Delete through the keyboard menu, but I cannot enter in my Windows password.

Recording a track this morning - 1,2,3,4,5, all going well, overdubbing acoustic rhythm, lead, vocal, and so forth-Â
Recording track 6, my song just comes to a screeching halt at 00:48.Â
Press PLAY and it just plays a split second right at 00:48.Â
"Loop" feature clicked on, off. Same same. Song starts at beginning, everything ok, then at 00:48, track stops. Press "play" and hear a split second of 00:48 music.Â
Deleted track I was working on, created new track, song halts at 00:48.Â
Saved project, quit GB, relaunched, song stops at 00:48.Â
Plenty of memory, I back up every day.Â

I'm having trouble using Migration Assistant to migrate my old iMac PPC G4 with 10.4.11 to my new iMac Intel i5 with 10.6.4. I used the option to use Ethernet or Wireless since the new iMac only accepts Firewire 2.0 and the old Mac is Firewire 1.0. I connected an Ethernet cable between the computers AND both are connected to the same network.Â
Using Migration Assistant on the new Mac, it brings up the screen that it is looking for the other Mac and gives me a passcode to enter when prompted on the old Mac. Using Migration Assistant on the old Mac, it brings up the screen that is it "Searching for other computers..." and does nothing else.Â
On the new Mac, migrate option "From Another Mac". On the old Mac, migration option "To Another Mac".Â
What can I do to make both Macs play nice?

Moved files from old iMac (2006) to new iMac (bought yesterday) that was running itunes music off of an external hard drive. Move seemed successful, and I re-attached external hard drive but Itunes would not open, saying itunes was a "newer version" than what was on new iMac already. Did software update and it did not finish the update, saying try again. Second time, it completed update, updating itunes and then the new iMac was able to read the external hard drive fine. I tested a few songs and itunes found them and played them fine, all artwork ok, etc.Â
So, then I tried to open Safari and it told me it could not run this version of Safari on the new iMac OSX. Tried the update software trick again, but it still will not open, same message. Under Safari preferences, it shows two default Safari versions, 5.0.4 i thinkg and 5.1.1 (i think) [I am at work now]. I can get around this and get to the internet fine by double clicking my Amazon MP3 icon, which asks if i want to quit and go to website to update, where i am then on amazon.com and have all my bookmarks etc listed on web browser just like before and it works fine...So how can i get icon or safari to open from dock or desktop? I have not tried to download new safari from apple website yet to see if that works to overwrite the others...Am i missing something simple? Can i just delete safari in applications and re-download it or should i run disk utility or ?

I got a MacBook Air a few months ago and finally got around to migrating data from my MacBook Pro. I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I used a Time Machine backup from an external HD for the migration. Is there any way to undo the migration?
