Final Cut Pro X :: Rename External Hard Drive Without Losing Links To Media?

Dec 1, 2014

I have a new Mac Pro, OS X version 10.9.5, running FCPX version 10.1.3. I have copied all of my data from a 1T external hard drive to a new 4T external hard drive, but FCPX doesn't recognize my media files unless I rename the new drive to that of the old one. The problem is I want to continue using the old one. Is there an easy way to relink my files and keep the original name of the new drive?

Final Cut Pro X :: Move Library To Separate Hard Drive Without Losing Any Links Or Preferences?

Dec 7, 2014

I've noticed that my main hard drive is filling up fast with videos, and I'd like to move my libraries on to a separate hard drive. Is this possible without losing any links or preferences? Is it as simple as moving the libraries in the finder, and if so will all the links follow the library to the new location?

MacBook Pro :: How To Rename External Hard Drive With Two Partitions

Jun 6, 2012

I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

Final Cut Pro X :: Editing On Internal Or External Drive For Small Media Files With Lots Of Layers And Compositing?

Aug 21, 2014

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.

I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX.  I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.

Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..

Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.

So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects  / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.

Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external) ...

MacBook :: Partition External Hard Drive Without Losing Data?

How do I partition my external hard drive without losing the data already on it? I've been using it with Time Machine on my old computer, but want to use it as a regular drag-and-drop type back up on my new computer. Is there any way to basically split the hard drive so I can still access the Time Machine backups on my old computer, but also be able to use it with my new mac?

ITunes :: Best Way To Transfer Media To External Hard Drive?

Mar 27, 2012

I have a 3TB USB 2.0 "media" external hard drive attached to my iMac. I use it to store all itunes media only, since I have over 300 movies. I also have tv shows, music etc. I just got a new 2TB thunderbolt LaCie Big Disk external drive. I want to transfer all stuff in "media" USB hard drive to new thunderbolt drive. Reason for doing this, sometimes current USB "media" drive lags on responding when I come back to use itunes from sleep or inactivity. I'm thinking about just dragging all content from old drive to new drive, eject old drive, name new thunderbolt drive "media", and relaunch itunes. Would that work successfully? I'd like my itunes to remember my play count. If my content play count is lost, does iMatch remembers play count and once I update my iMatch with new thunderbolt drive installed, will my play count be updated to my itunes?

ITunes :: Importing Media From An External Hard Drive

Jun 27, 2012

I had all of my iTunes music files stored on an external HD, which I used whenever I used iTunes. Maybe 200GB worth of tunes.I now have a new MacBook Pro, and I would like to import all of those music files to the internal HD of this laptop. So, without fishing around in the ancient old system for the Library file... I'd like to start fresh. I have no interest in keeping any ratings or play counts of the tunes. Do I simply go to the Add To Library command under the File menu, and select the iTunes Music folder on the external HD? Will this copy over my entire collection, and build a new Library file? Will my music library appear the same as it was before, in the iTunes application window? I imagine that this operation will take a bit of time. I seem to recall doing something like this, years ago, and noticing that the copying process missed entire albums etc.

ITunes :: Moving Library To External Hard Drive & Finding Media Location

Apr 27, 2012

I've followed several tutorials on how to get this done, as it seems so simple but it's not working on my end. I've moved the iTunes folder from the /music/ to an external hard drive. I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media

I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.

Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.

ITunes For Mac :: Move Media And Libraries To External Hard Drive / When Keep Organized Deselected

Jun 29, 2014

step by step directions for moving the actual media ‘files’, ie the mp3s, as well as the necessary library files, to an external drive, when ‘keep media organized’ and ‘copy files to media folder’ are NOT SELECTED?I am running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10 [and prefer a solution which does not require updating software. I prefer to maintain my own customized  folder and file structure for my mp3s; and have therefore deselected

1] Keep iTUnes Media folder organized  and 2] Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. All the directions in the various posts seem to require selecting these options.  Is this critical for success?

From the many posts I have read, it seems there’s more to it than just drag and drop, that I need to ensure that iTunes is ‘pointed’ to somewhere? Not the mp3s themselves, but to a ‘library” [is that yet another copy of the mp3s? somewhere on my hard drive?].

Additionally, over the years I have moved about 45GB of mp3s to ‘storage’ external hard drives to create more space on my laptop. Not ideal interim solution.  I am again low on space and have decided to buy new external drive for holding all of my mp3s, ie the 45 GB in ‘storage’ and the remaining 75 GB from my laptop.  Ideally, I would like to also keep all my artwork, playlists and ratings and the like [which I guess are in the ‘libraries’???]

Am I correct, that I will need to also move to the new external hard drive that folder which holds the .itl and .xml files and which is named ‘iTunes’???  and then there is another step to link the ‘media’ to the ‘library’ to ‘itunes’?

Final Cut Pro X :: Library Linking To External Media?

Dec 8, 2014

Working on an iMac with a FCX library that links to an external media folder which has all my video. I'm not using managed media, but external links to the video source footage.

I make an exact duplicate copy of my FCX library on a USB drive, including the external media folder with all my video clips -- using the same folder structure and everything, But when I move that to another computer (MacBook Pro), open the exact same FCX library, open the same project -- I get missing links on every clip on my timeline. The library doesn't connect to the external media folder.

Re-linking causes an error and doesn't work either. The FCX library just won't take my "external media" folder which it links to fine on my iMac. All my projects on my MacBook Pro, have red "missing file" icons instead of the clips.

Running FCX 10.1.4. and Yosemite.

Final Cut Pro X :: Able To Recognize Again Media Files From Original Hard Disk

Sep 2, 2014

My hard disk is a Raid system. 4x3TB = total 12TB but 3 TB is for backup. So in effect usage space is 9TB. But now used up 7TB (called it original harddisk) I took my iMac to a shop and it dis some verify and tried to repair the disk using Disk Utility. But it cannot repair. Apparently, he said that my hard disk is okay but it has a directory corrupt problem. That is why now my FCPX cannot read all the data. All my media files for FCPX are stored in this 9TB external hard disk. So, I was told the steps to do are:

1)  copy all these 7TB data from Original hard disk into a new hard disk (called it haddisk B).

2) Then reformat the old 9TB hard disk (which we earlier called as original hard disk).

3) Then I copy back from hard disk B into Original Harddisk 9TB Question is will FCPX be able to recognise again my media files from the Original hard disk in

OS X :: Hard Drive Slowly Losing Space

Oct 27, 2009

I'm running an intel Imac 2.16ghz c2d with 3 gigs memory and 250 gig hard drive. Here's how it started. I was surfing on the Flock browser one day, and then all of a sudden, my hard drive space was full! I wasn't downloading anything. I checked my log folder in the library and lo and behold, there was almost 2 gigs stored in the console folder! What? Anyway, I cleaned it out and my Mac is now under routine maintenance via OnyX. I also use virus barrier x5 and nothing is wrong with my Mac. I also run disk inventory x and run activity monitor. Now, I got my hard drive space back at 200.37 gigs. But sometimes when I reboot, my hard drive shows it at 200.48, then as time goes by while I surf, it slowly decreases to 200.27 gigs, then it will slowly go back up to 200.37 gigs, and so forth. I'm not downloading anything, just surfing. Has this happened to you guys before? Is the virtual memory causing this? Are there any cure for this besides formatting the hd again? What's going on?

Applications :: Restoring Partition And Losing Hard Drive Space?

I've installed and uninstalled windows couple of times through the Bootcamp. when installing the Windows 7, it asks to format the partition so that the Windows can be installed. My questions comes here, I also restored the partition couple of times for no reason and whenever I restored it, I noticed that the space used by Windows never gets added back up to Mac Partition. So does that mean the space used by Windows will be just floating around? To simplify my question: After restoring the Windows partition, the space used by windows, will it be added back up to the Mac partition(to 1 partition)?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: TimeMachine Won't Create Hard Links For Replacement Drive If Not Connected

May 26, 2012

With TimeMachine, I backup two external drives (let's call them drive A and B). Recently, drive B broke and I restored the data on a replacement drive and gave the volume the same name as the broken one had. I made TimeMachine aware of the fact that this new drive corresponds to the old one by using the "tmutil -a associatedisk" command as described here: [URL]When TimeMachine started the next backup, it did not perform all full backup of the new drive, though still way more than it should. So far so god.

The problem is: if TimeMachine performs a backup while the new drive (the replacement of drive B) is not connected, it does not create the hard links for it. Drive A is not connected either, though hard links for it show up in the Backups.backupdb folder for this backup. If the replacement drive is connected the next time, TimeMachine will perform a full backup of it ... most likely because the previous backup does not contain any hard links.

ITunes :: Transfer Its Media Library From One PC To Another Without Losing Files?

May 6, 2012

I have imported a number of Caf del Mar CD's to iTunes, and iTunes keeps scattering the tunes into several different folders in iTunes Media. It also has trouble finding album information, unless it has been downloaded from iTunes Store. Previous versions of iTunes I have tried didn't have this problem.I've tried to tidy the files manually in iTunes Media, but that usually results in duplicates, so I stopped messing with it. I actually wouldn't mind iTunes blowing up my albums into a nightmare file structure of hyper categorization in iTunes Media (Album, Album Artist, Artist, etc.) if only it recognised its own mess when I transfer the library from one iTunes library into another.

An example: I downloaded Cafe del Mar - Essential Elements featuring 13 tunes, two of these can be found in the files Cafe del Mar/Cafe del Mar Essential Elements, iTunes also created the folder Cafe del Mar/Cafe del_Mar Essential Elements containing 0 tunes!?! and the rest of the tunes are found under Rue de Soleil in the root folder, indicating ONE of the artists as the criteria for creating a folder of tunes!?!

I am trying with every fiber NOT to hate this program, and would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how I can move an iTunes Media library of aprox 54 gb from my desktop via an external harddisk onto my laptop. I have tried 4 times, and everytime the result varies. Sometime I transfer 3000 files, other times 4000. Which files follow and don't is random. I lose files tranferring to the external harddisk and lose even more files from the external disk to the new library on my Lap. Do I have to transfer song for song or can this genius program actually transfer a larger amount of files without losing half the files and duplicating the rest?

Is there a limit of size or amount of files?

ITunes For Mac :: Set Up A Library On External Drive That Can Download All Of Media

Jun 3, 2014

I've searched through all of the threads pertaining to this issue and i've yet to find a solid, good answer. Basically, I have a macbook pro retina machine with 250 GB. I have over 100 movies purchased in iTunes as well as multiple TV shows that if I were to attempt to download onto my local disk the shear size would make my HDD .

I have a 1TB external drive and am just wanting to make hard copies of all of my videos and music on my external. Is there a specific way to use my external disk to not only backup my computer via time machine, but to also use it to backup all of my videos and music. I don't mind watching all of my content via the iCloud but I'm having difficulties creating a library on my external and then using that to download all of my movies. As I can't download all of them on my local disk and then transfer a copy, I need to figure out a way to set up my library on the external disk and then download everything to the external.Just to clarify my questions to you powers at be:

1. I need to set up a library on my external drive that I can download all of my media to.

2. I want to still be able to use itunes on my macbook and just watch all of my media/music on the icloud

3. Can I still use the same drive that has all of my backed up media as a backup through time machine as well?

I've scoured all of the forums and really all I could find was how to set up libraries on an external disk. None of them ever mention whether or not I can basically use my itunes library locally however I want, knowing that everything I've ever bought is backed up on my external.
