I am trying to pull up my Western Digital External Hard drive after connecting it via USB. I used to be able to open it through Finder and there is nothing showing up.

I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have purchased a Seagate 500gb 2.5 inch laptop hard drive to replace my feeble 120gb drive. I am trying to set up this drive using carbon copy cloner before changing it over, I'm using an external enclosure for this. The problem I'm having is the hard drive isn't recognized at all.
It's not showing up in finder or disk utility so I don't know how to format the drive.
I'm using Leopard 10.5.6
The instructions that cam with the enclosure mention setting the hard drive to function in master mode, what does this mean? I don't want to go to all the effort of changing the hard drive if there's some sort of problem, and I would rather clone my drive before removing it too.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a photographer. I use 4 X 1TB LaCie external hard drives to store my digital images. 2 as masters for different business segments and 2 as their back-ups. They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.

My WD firewire 800 drive has stopped working, I can hear it spinning when I plug it in but the light doesn't come on and my computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried both the firewire and usb connections.

I had accidently formatted my 500GB to use for Time Machine, but realized, I didn't need that much storage, so reverted to the 250GB for Time Machine and the 500GB for storage. But it seems, in the formatting stage (for Time Machine), it set my file system for the 500GB to Mac OS Journaled. I can see this hard drive on the Mac, but it does not recognize it in Windows (although I hear the USB plug in sound, doesn't show up in "My Computer"). Does this have to do with the formatting? If so, how can I format it so that the external hard drives can be read by both Mac OS X and Windows? Does it require moving my data (before formatting?)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAnother one of those "external hard drive not recognized" problems: I am using a Mac Mini. The external LaCie drive is in one of those beautiful boxes designed by a guy named Porsche. It's connected via Fire Wire. I have my iPhoto library stored on it. It was working just fine for the past two days after I first connected it.
Now it does not show on the Desktop. It is identified only as "Unknown device" in "About This Mac." iPhoto doesn't recognize it. I've looked at the other threads on this subject here and have reset the PRAM. Disk Utility recognized it for a while and said the disk was OK. Now Disk Utility does not recognize it at all.
I turned off the drive and turned it back on. That resulted in an alarming series of beeps, almost like somebody was sending the Morse code symbol for "E" over and over again. I turned the drive off and then on again. Now the light goes on and the drive whirs nicely. I am using System 10.6.2. Or rather, at this point it is using me.
I have an Iomega 320GB SPHDU external hard drive which I was using as my backup disk for Time Machine and also to store other files (documents, photos, etc.). I have been using for some time now and never had any problems, however this morning, I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro, which is from early 2011 and on operating system OS X 10.9.4, using the USB ports and the hard drive did not appear in Finder. I checked to see if it had appeared in Disk Utility which it does, but Disk Utility is telling me that the hard drive needs repairing. When I try to repair the hard drive, I get the message 'Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.'

My external WD 320GB hard drive wont show up on Finder when I connect it up. Ive been having this problem ever since I pulled it out without ejecting it - I know thats bad but my macbook froze and I had no choice.
Now my external hard drive wont show up on Finder, I even tried disk utility and I was able to verify the disk & then repair it, but its like I cant use the hard drive anymore. Every time I try to add files to it or remove files my laptop freezes and I cant do anything.
Its got to the point where all I want to do now is get all my files off this external hard drive somewhow, Is there a way to get my files off this hard drive before its too late if isnt already so.

I installed NTFS for Mac to read/write external hard disks that I shared between my Macs and PCs. It's doing find until recently after I upgrade my MacBook to Mac OS Lion.
It can still can detect certain external Hard Disk, but still cannot detect some external Hard Disk and Flash Drive even though it is supposed to be dual formatted.

It used to previously work fine. It has only one partition on it, which is HFS+ formatted. Disk utility verify/repair reports that the drive is fine.

My external Hard Drive (Western Digital 2TB hard drive in a ICYBOX 2-bay USB 2.0 HD Dock) won't transfer files to the Mac HD. The transfer box comes up but stays at the 'estimating time' stage and remains like that. No matter how big the file/group of files are (biggest I've tried was only 500-odd MB) it won't transfer and stays at the 'estimating time' stage. When I try and stop the transfer, the transfer box remains at the 'stopping' stage until I restart the iMac. I can access other programs during this 'stopping' stage, as long as it doesn't involve the External HD.
When I attempt to open files from the External HD in Photoshop CS4, both Photoshop and Finder stop responding and have I have to 'Force Quit'. However, upon force quitting finder, I loose all icons on the desktop until I restart the Mac via holding down the 'Power' button on the back.
Ive already done a couple things.
- I excluded the Ext HD on the Spotlight>Privacy tab.
- I verified the Ext HD via System Utilities. Some errors came up but the Repair was successful and subsequent Verifications have returned as 'OK'.
- I tried the Mac Diagnostic tool as suggested by Apple, but when I press the 'D' key on start up nothing happens.
The annoying thing is that this problem came out of the blue, the Ext HD was working fine 3 days ago.

So I've purchased a new new WD Scorpio Black thinking it was a HD issue, but after replacing my old HD with the WD, Disk Utility wouldn't recognize the new drive. So I searched around and found out that Hard Drive Cable failure is an issue on this certain MacBook. So I ordered a new Hard Drive cable and just replaced that today, thinking that my new HD would be recognized. However after going into Disk Utility via the OS X Install DVD, my new Hard Drive was still not recognized.

Have a mid 2009 13" 2.26 dual core. Started getting flashing folder with question mark icon and found hard drive failed.
