OS X :: External Hard Drive Not Shown Under Disc Utilities / Finder
Jun 27, 2008
I recently purchased a 500gb LaCie hard drive to use as as extra storage for media, not necessarily for back up purposes. I cannot seem to find it either under disc utilities or in the finder window. Has anyone had this issue with a hard drive and if so any suggestions?
I have a Macbook (blackbook) running OS X 10.5.3 and a 160GB Firelite HD that connects via USB. It use to show up and run just find but lately it hasn't been showing up on the desktop or in Finder. However, it shows up in Disk Utility, which shows that nothing is wrong with it. How do I get it to show back up on the desktop/finder?
I have successfully connected a couple of times to a firewire external hard drive connected to my dad's iMac over the internet (AFP server) for the purpose of backing up some files, but now it doesn't show up at all as a volume when I connect to his iMac through finder/go/connect to server. I don't believe that any settings were changed, so don't understand why it isn't showing up. Currently when I get info on the drive 'shared folder' is checked, everyone has permission to read and write and 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked and file sharing is enabled in system preferences/sharing.
I have a Western Digital External HD and am using an emac computer. I left my hd plugged into another mac for a week while I was on vacation, it was working fine. When I got back it was not showing up on the computer, and would not show up after I unplugged it, restarted, etc. I thought maybe it was the computer, but it will not show up on mine either. I cannot be sure the hd was not dropped, but I was told that it was not dropped. Anyway, it turns on when plugged in and makes noises like it's working, and the lights are on. It just does not show up on my computer. My friend said this is probably a case problem, but I don't know what to do in general about it.
Went and did the bootcamp thing and installed Windows 7. I tried to connect my HD external via firewire, but it would not show up in Windows. This is after I did a backup of my mac to time machine. Will it work after time machine backup?
When I connect an external harddrive to my Macbookpro it does not show on Finder, Diskutil (but the hdd disk starts). USB works fine. If I plug in FW when computer is shut down or sleep it works fine. Cant find out why. Tried with different cables and disks.

I have a 1TB external hard drive I use for backing up my digital camera pics. I have been using it on my parents compaq presario. However I recently made the switch to a Mac and bought a early 2005 Power Mac g5 dual 2.0ghz with osx 10.5 on it. The question I want to know is, if I unplug the drive from the presario and plug it into the back of the g%, will the files show up or does the drive need to be reformatted?
If so i'll just back everything up and reformat it and switch the drive to my computer.
I am trying to create a bootable copy of my mac and would like to include the windows XP partition as well. I am planning to install this copy onto multiple CPU's after I have created it on the external HD. Is there a way to copy both partitions onto the external and what should the formatting look like.
I have an Iomega 320GB SPHDU external hard drive which I was using as my backup disk for Time Machine and also to store other files (documents, photos, etc.). I have been using for some time now and never had any problems, however this morning, I plugged the hard drive into my MacBook Pro, which is from early 2011 and on operating system OS X 10.9.4, using the USB ports and the hard drive did not appear in Finder. I checked to see if it had appeared in Disk Utility which it does, but Disk Utility is telling me that the hard drive needs repairing. When I try to repair the hard drive, I get the message 'Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.'
I've got OSX on a MacBook Pro and a bunch of programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator etc. and I'd like them to be accessible in my dock like iPhoto or iMovie.
How do I do this?
BTW, currently, I have Firefox in the dock but when I click on it a box pops up and I have to again click on the Firefox logo for the app to actually open. Then something that looks like an external hard drive with the Firefox logo appears on my Desktop. Why is this happening?
wouldn't even load. It would just show the little blue "light" flashing on and off, as if Finder were launching, crashing, launching, crashing. After some deduction, I found the problem to be my USB WD hard drive. It used to previously work fine. It has only one partition on it, which is HFS+ formatted. Disk utility verify/repair reports that the drive is fine.
1. I plug in my 2.5" external hard drive. It appears in Finder. I can see the contents of the main directory. 2. The moment I CLICK on any folder/file, I get the beach ball and Finder crashes. This is the only time Finder crashes.I've searched the forums but all the results are old and no solutions have been found.
I have 2 usb drives attached to my iMac which is running snow leopard. I am trying to share the hard drives so i can install some software on my Macbook but i cant see the drives in my finder on the macbook. I have checked all the settings on my imac and everything is shared properly but i still get nothing.
finder application stopped finding certain types of files on an external drive. The external drive (WD 80GB) is recognised and I have access to all files, however, when I search for specific files in the finder window it wont find pdf, txt, doc files. It does find picture files such as jpg. I have tried using the drive on my laptop (snow leopard) and macmini (leopard)
I am trying to pull up my Western Digital External Hard drive after connecting it via USB. I used to be able to open it through Finder and there is nothing showing up.
I have a flash drive that I purchased yesterday. The first time I stuck it in it was read like expected. I ejected it correctly, everything was fine. Now when I put it in, it doesn't show up on the desktop or in the finder. However when I unplug it I get the message saying it was not removed correctly.
My external WD 320GB hard drive wont show up on Finder when I connect it up. Ive been having this problem ever since I pulled it out without ejecting it - I know thats bad but my macbook froze and I had no choice.
Now my external hard drive wont show up on Finder, I even tried disk utility and I was able to verify the disk & then repair it, but its like I cant use the hard drive anymore. Every time I try to add files to it or remove files my laptop freezes and I cant do anything.
Its got to the point where all I want to do now is get all my files off this external hard drive somewhow, Is there a way to get my files off this hard drive before its too late if isnt already so.
I installed NTFS for Mac to read/write external hard disks that I shared between my Macs and PCs. It's doing find until recently after I upgrade my MacBook to Mac OS Lion.
It can still can detect certain external Hard Disk, but still cannot detect some external Hard Disk and Flash Drive even though it is supposed to be dual formatted.
i was wondering if it is possible to install snow leopard without a superdrive or the remote disc utility, but from an external hard disk drive which the snow leopard files have been put on.i have already googled to the end of the world. no success so far.
I have recently tried to run Onyx which has identified a problem which requires me to run disc utilities from the start up disc. The Snow leopard disc I have only appears to offer Install option.
Q1 Have I missed something? Q2 Otherwise should I try to run Disc Utilities from an earlier version of OSX
My external Hard Drive (Western Digital 2TB hard drive in a ICYBOX 2-bay USB 2.0 HD Dock) won't transfer files to the Mac HD. The transfer box comes up but stays at the 'estimating time' stage and remains like that. No matter how big the file/group of files are (biggest I've tried was only 500-odd MB) it won't transfer and stays at the 'estimating time' stage. When I try and stop the transfer, the transfer box remains at the 'stopping' stage until I restart the iMac. I can access other programs during this 'stopping' stage, as long as it doesn't involve the External HD.
When I attempt to open files from the External HD in Photoshop CS4, both Photoshop and Finder stop responding and have I have to 'Force Quit'. However, upon force quitting finder, I loose all icons on the desktop until I restart the Mac via holding down the 'Power' button on the back.
Ive already done a couple things.
- I excluded the Ext HD on the Spotlight>Privacy tab. - I verified the Ext HD via System Utilities. Some errors came up but the Repair was successful and subsequent Verifications have returned as 'OK'. - I tried the Mac Diagnostic tool as suggested by Apple, but when I press the 'D' key on start up nothing happens.
The annoying thing is that this problem came out of the blue, the Ext HD was working fine 3 days ago.
My system: iMac 21.5inch, mid 2010 3.6GHz Intel Core i5 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
The Ext HD: Western Digital 2TB Mac OS Extended (Journalised) 1.91TB available on the HD Shares a 2 Bay ICYBOX dock with another 2TB WD HD Connected to the iMac via USB 2.0 to a 4-port USB 2.0 hub
how I can be able to see my external hard drive? I've been using it before and was able to see it until I upgraded my OS to Mavericks....Now, I cannot find it in the finder but I can see it in the disk utility however, my mac does not allow me to do anything on it...I don't want to reformat coz I have important files in my hard drive...
I want to add Drive Genius and Disk Warrior to my recovery Hard Drive partition on my Macbook pro. I can make it visible but can I add them to the patition once I make it visible or is it read only or exactly the right size for what's on it?

In trying to repair my hard drive, which disc utility said was corrupt, it stopped repairing it because it could not unmount the disc?I booted my macbook pro from my backup hard drive.
New member. Just got myself a new MacBook pro i5 15' to replace my old MacBook. I noticed when I opened the system profiler under ATA it said no hard drive was present or selected or something to that effect. Everything is running beautifully on the machine but I was just curious why nothing showed up. Any ideas?
