Intel Mac :: Freezes And Crashes Randomly
Feb 3, 2012
My iMac randomly freezes and crashes on me. Most of the freezes occur when scrolling with my trackpad on websites with Google Chrome. I get the pinwheel and have to use the power button to turn off and on the iMac. I haven't noticed any particular connection to Flash websites or video related sites. It just seems kind of random. I've also been careful to have absolutely nothing else running and it still does not prevent it.
Also, from time to time the iMac will crash and go to a solid color screen. Either Blue-Gray, White or Black. It seems to be random colors. When this happens, I have to use the power button to cycle it off and back on again.
Some info about my iMac: Model Identifier: iMac7,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2 GHz Mac OSX 10.6.8
What could be causing this or how can I diagnose the problem? I can give more info if needed.

I'm having huge issues with my 20-inch early 2008 iMac running 10.7.3. I upgraded my RAM (to 4Gb) 8 months ago and everything was running nice and easy until I upgraded to Lion. Either one of these things happen: My screen goes entirely grey or blue with white faded thin vertical stripes at random timesMac freezes working with any Adobe applications (mouse cursor still works but I can't click anything until I turn off and on)Mac freezes for a while and after a 30-second delay clicking and pressing buttons frantically everything goes back to normal
The strangest thing is that when I play Sims 3 for example (a beast of RAM and video drainer) nothing happens. I tried almost everything from repairing permissions to re-install my memory modules. I couldn't run the hardware test.
Note: I live in Brazil so sending my machine to a Genius Bar is completely off the question.

Only a laserprinter is connected. Sometimes I can work for a few weeks without problem, but then the computer freezes. The computer sounds 3 monotone chimes in a row and repeats this, keyboard an mouse become inactive till I do a hard shutdown.Took the computer 2 times to the Apple store, they tested for a week but apparently nothing happened then.

I have a 2006 imac (1GB memory) with tiger that had been having some issues last year with crashing so I ended up and installing snow leopard and it worked great for about a year and now its acting up again. It freezes at least 2 times a day and I can't open the force quit window so I shut it off manually, but when I turn it back on it has these weird lines on it like a line of pixels got corrupted or something, but sometimes they go away. I save everything to an external drive so I don't think it has to do with it being overloaded. I did notice it mostly happens when I'm multitasking (more than one tab open, or word and firefox open at the same time) or watching a movie. Occasionally it will crash and the screen goes a peach color with white lines and I have to manually restart.

I have a problem with my iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2 GB 667 MHz DDR 2 SDRAM), running OSX 10.6.5. OSX crashes and freezes all the time. Nothing works anymore. Sometimes it just freezes, and I can only move my cursor, but nothing reacts anymore. Sometimes the screen blacks (or sometimes blanks) out or shows the weird moving colours as shown on the photo I just took below: After restart, it often happens again and again. Then the iMac is fine for a couple of days, before it freezes again. Can anyone diagnose the problem from the info above?

It just randomly freezes, cutting off all ability to navigate the desktop.Re-booting the system resolves the problem, but leaves me with a lot of lost work.SOMETIMES taking out and putting back in the batteries resolves the problems, but not often. The kayboard continues to work, so it doesn't seem to be a bluetooth issue.

Typical Apple discussion from browsing the web but I will give it a go. I'm not doing anything to cause it to crash, I deleted mailboxes and just kept iCloud still crash, I just other mailboxes like Gmail and got rid of iCloud still crashed. I deleted RSS feeds still crashed, It still crashes when nothing else is open, I rebuilt my mail library (I will leave that one as a cliff hanger to if it worked or not).
Any ideas or better alternatives to Mail? I don't like outlook and really should never be an option.

Did an upgrade install from 10.5.8 to SL (MacPro early 2008, 8800 Nvidia). Didn't use the Mac for a couple of hours - when I came back I had a black screen and no way of reviving Mac (only forced shutdown via power button). this happened twice. Did never have a problem previously.

I have got a problem with my brand new Mac Pro. It randomly freezes at start-up and shutdown. I sometimes am able to work around the problem by turning on the monitors last or switching them off first but it does not always work and is a pain anyway. While waiting for Apple or another manufacturer to release a decently priced 4k display, I am using 2 HP 24' monitors inherited from my previous desktop.
One is connected via an HDMI cable (HP2405) and the other via a thunderbolt to HDMI cable with a DVI adapter (HP2448).Would I be better of using a Thunderbolt connection for both displays ? Or any other connection?

I used to open up GarageBand 09 normally and it would take about 10-20 seconds. Now it takes a couple of minutes while it says its not responding. I don't think this is normal. Also sometimes when I am scrolling down through software instruments it randomly freezes and then shuts down unexpectedly. I have the new 13.3" 2.4ghz macbook. i have alot of free space and no files in the GB folder. I haven't touched anything regarding the system's font, new or old.

I don't know why, but iTunes entirely too often on my computer. I use a 15" MBP running 10.6.4 (The latest version of SL). I'm using iTunes 10, but I was having this issue prior to the update. It crashes seemingly randomly sometimes when I finish an album, sometimes between songs, and sometimes just mid-song. Restarting seemed to help once, but it eventually started crashing again, and all subsequent reboots have had no effect. I have about 21 GB of music, mostly pirated (though let's not get into that debate); I listen to music by the album. My library is completely music (no TV shows, podcasts, etc.). Am I the only one sending them 20 enraged error messages a day?

Safari crashes randomly, meaning that it sometimes is running in the beackground and I am not doing anything with it. It seems that this problem only exists since I have done the following changes: I updated the Adobe Flash Player and I downloaded and installed Minecraft for Mac (I did not play it, since I forgot it was not for free ^^).

I just bought my new 2012 macbook pro a couple weeks ago, and so far it has crashed and rebooted by itself four times. Three of those four times, I had only been running a couple programs, such as Chrome and Mail, while all others were closed. the entire computer will freeze for about 6-7 seconds (no response to mouse movement/keyboard) and then shut down and reboot.
Is this a bug with OS X Lion? or the new macbook Pro? or my macbook pro specifically indicating there's some sort of defect?

My Mac will freeze at random moments (not while running any particular app or program) and go to a blue screen, after a few seconds it clears up by itself. Sometimes it will happen several times in a row, sometimes 10 - 15 minutes in between.

I got a new Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2014) a few weeks ago and the trackpad and screen randomly freeze even when the only thing I have open is Safari. In other words, it doesn't feel like my computer has a 2.6 GHz Processor and 8 GB 1600 Mhz Memory. My downloads folder also constantly has the loading bar under it; it goes away when I remove it from the dock and replace it, but appears again after downloading one thing.
This is really frustrating when I got a new Macbook so that I wouldn't have to deal with these types of problems. They're all issues that I never encountered with my Macbook Air (mid-2011).

recently my ibook keeps randomly locking up, it first started the other day when it got stuck on a blue screen at start-up eventually it came on, but kept locking up, no spinning beech ball just completely froze, i held down the power button to turn it off, i then had to wait at least ten minutes before trying to start up again, if i didn't it would get stuck on the blue screen, then something else weird happened, when i started up it came up with the mac set-up assistant similar to when you first upgrade, so i turned it off again and it went away, so i started up again this time i noticed that spotlight was indexing, despite it already doing that ages ago when i upgraded to leopard, so i thought this had something to do with it, because it kept freezing in the process, but today i turned it on, let it index and to my surprise it didn't lock up, so i went to play world of warcraft, and as soon as the login screen came up it locked up agai

So, I have a late 2011 MBP 2GH i7, OSX 10.9.3. 500GB HD 16 BG 1600 Mhz DDR3.
The problems started a while ago when the computer started freezing at random times. The mouse would move and there was no "pinwheel" but the computer was unresponsive. When I closed the screen the power was still on and the screen did not shut off. The only way to reset the computer was to hold the power button and do a hard reset. I don't remember if I replaced the RAM from 4BG to 8GB Crucial Memory before or after the computer started freezing, either way, shortly after or around the time when I replaced the ram the hard drive also failed.
I replaced the HD with I believe a Seagate hybrid drive with a small solid state segment. This whole time the computer is still freezing and now since I have a hybrid drive the Apple store can't support because it's not factory specs and MacMall here in Santa Monica can't find anything wrong with the hardware or software after running all of their tests.
At this time I have a feeling it is the ram so I purchase a new 16GB Crucial RAM. Everything is great till it yet once again freezes in the same way as before BUT!! Now if the computer sleeps because the battery run's low, when I plug it in and the computer reboots (grey opaque screen with the vertical lines as the bottom) it starts beeping 3 times. I hard reset via the power button and the computer boots up as normal (although a little slower).

just recently on my mac pro any simple task causes the finder to freeze or crash, it then relaunches itself but with no menu bar and zero functionality. disk repair says disk ok, permissions repair complete, also tried trashing the finder preference file, and starting again.but to no resolution of problem.this morning though i got a crash report (first time) this is a screen shot from the first few lines, you may need to zoom in to read it properly.

I have an old macbook, its about 5 years old, one of the first aluminum models.
It has always served me well but now it has broken.
When I try and start it up it shows the grey loading screen, I see the little stripes rotating, to show that something is loading and then... it turns off.

I have a 2010 15" Macbook pro and I was wondering what information do I need to know to be able to upgrade from 4GB - 8GB. My macbook pro sometimes freezes, I did a clean install of OS X Lion two days ago, and now I am still having some crashes and freezes, I was just wondering if I need to add an extra ram. Also, I would like to know what's the maximum of Ram MBP could handle or be installed in.

A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.
I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:
- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)
So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.
