I've got an old 20 inch blue and white CRT monitor connected to my last rev. Powerbook G4 with RAM upped to 1.5 gigs. I also have some peripherals connected to the usb hub on the monitor and all my ports on the powerbook itself are used up as well. Basically I'm running this mainly as a desktop. So, through the day while i'm working I get these blips on the screen randomly. they are horizontal blips almost as if I've just turned the monitor on. It is seriously about a millisecond. blink of an eye. anyways the freeze happens 99% of the time right after one of these blips AND while I'm holding the mouse button (usually manually scrolling in Firefox) it freezes for a second, i get the spinning beachball, but then it turns back to the arrow.
i can move the arrow all over the place, but i cannot do anything else. option+apple+esc doesn't do anything. the scaling effect doesn't work on the dock. i can't start or quit anything. if iTunes is playing, the music plays on, yet everything else is still frozen. so I open the lid and hold down the powerbutton until it shuts down. then i start up again. i have no problems when i use the powerbook without the external monitor. so is the monitor the culprit? Do i need to get a newer monitor? could it be a problem with usb 1.0 ports on the monitor and the usb 2.0 ports on the powerbook - a conflict of interest so to speak?

So often, when I'm working with Firefox or Safari (mostly Firefox), my computer will come seconds away from crashing. It'll pause with the rainbow wheel twirling around, but if I have something like even Skype open or photoshop, I can still work in those. I've had to close Firefox a FEW times, at LEAST, in the last little while because of this.
Why is Firefox acting so WEIRD?! I've even uninstalled it and installed a new version! Why isn't it getting fixed? Is there a better program that won't do this on my brand new laptop with Leopard 10.5 OSX?

Since the recent software update (early Feb I believe) my Mac has begun to freeze, first finder, then safari/chrome, followed by all other applications.
I have set up Activity Monitor to track what is causing the issue, however when the computer freezes I cannot open Activity Monitor (obviously).
I have contacted Apple Care with the hope that they could provide some assistance, we deleted all startup files (and the other startup related files in library), ran disk utility and repaired permissions.
We noticed that spotlight was using a lot of the CPU, and I removed my external time machine harddrive (as it appeared that it was damaged).
The freezing still occured, so I reinstalled Lion. The computer appeared to be working again... until it began to freeze again.

On my late 2011 imac 21.5" I have been getting a consistent problem since the last OS update. After the screensaver comes on, or, if left to sleep by it's own devices, either my screensaver freezes or the gray screen won't recover from sleep. If I move the cursor with the trackpad it clears the gray screen where the cursor moves around. I can usually clear enough that I can hit the login button and log in after pushing the power button. This is a new phenomenon since the latest OS update.

I've been using Pc's for the past 30 odd years so am totally new to Mac. I'm doing my best to adapt to this new different OS and so far have found some things more user friendly but others ? I've more or less given up on those as Mac doesn't seem to do those things. These are probably Windows based and I'm assuming Mac has its own alternatives that I haven't discovered yet. Anyway, my immediate problem is this goddamned frustrating situation when I try to re-activate the comp' after waking it from 'sleep'. Sometimes its fine but others, it comes back on but freezes and the only option I have is to turn it off at the switch and do a re-boot!

I bought an iMac about 2 weeks ago and when accessing files from external hard drives I will get the spinning beach ball and all of the programs will become unresponsive and the only way to relieve the problem is to power down the computer. We have two 3 TB Seagate HDs connected via USB.

I have tried repairing permissions, rebooting, verify disk and onyx. I do not have many apps installed, no login items, 5 items on desktop, 107gb left on my hd, no antivirus, and nothing processor or memory intensive running. Also, when I try to delete custom prefpanes system preferences freezes with the spinning wheel. Some apps (mainly keynote) often freeze unexpectedly causing me to lose all my work.

My Macbook has started to freeze up constantly after startup, applications are non-responsive. I can still move the mouse around the screen when this happens but the pointer soon turns into the beach-ball icon and after 5 minutes things go back to normal but only for a minute or two before everything starts freezing up again. There is a clicking noise coming from inside the mac whenever this happens.I have run a virus check which reported no infections and i have uninstalled all programs installed since the problem occurred but to no avail.

I am running 10.3.9 on a PowerBook G4. I installed a bunch of fonts (through Font Book) about 2 years ago, and since that time some of my apple apps freeze from time to time. Namely, Calculator, Text Edit and Safari. I also noticed that in this state, the AutoUpdates don't download. I found a solution of overwriting the required system fonts (especially Keyboard and LastResort), then rebooting. Normally, this sets it right.
However, now my Installer is freezing (trying to install a new Adobe product), as well as Disk Utility. (This means I can't fix those permissions or do First aid, since the Disk Utility freezes). I have not tried reinstalling OS X yet. Might this be related to "Helvetica Neue"?

When I hover my mouse over an application (such as Terminal) it freezes with the message 'process Termainl [pid] caught causing excessive wakeups...'
Some applications (such as Google Chrome) work fine. Others (iTerm, Terminal, Hipchat) are susceptible. If the application exhibits the behaviour - without fail, simply hovering the mouse over the application window, without clicking or giving it explicit focus, will cause it to freeze.
Prior to this, my battery had swollen and the suspicion was that it was pressing against the trackpad resulting in a constant stream of interrupts. I took the battery out and am typing this without the battery - the issue persists.
I also tried disconnecting the trackpad. Same issue, even when using an external mouse to navigate.

Firefox hangs pages, won't load pages ect. It does not do this all the time, but a fair amount of it. I do not have the same problem with Safari, so I am suspicious as to whether other browsers are less eefficient on my Mac by design so that I use Safari exclusively

I have read all the comments reference removal of Firefox, it doesn't move. I CLICK ON launch Pad, move to the Firefox app, grab it and move it to the trash; the basket expands as it should but the App will not go in; it shoots straight back up to the Grid Position.I've opened the App looking for Locks, Permissions and so on but it just will not go. Even when it is in the Dock and moved over the Trash it doesn't give the warning that it is in use.... it just doesn't want to know.
