View 8 RepliesI have a shared folder on Lion Server. The permissions for the folder are set to everyone can read & write. When I add files from another computer to the shared folder the file permissions are not set to read & write for everyone. Is there a setting I am missing on the server to make all files added over the network to have the same permissions as the folder?

I have a config file, /etc/my.cnf that has permissions set via the finder gui to have read/write for anyone that's an "admin". My user is an admin (turns out I'm the only user as well), but when I open this file (it's plain text) in text edit it gives me an error on save saying that I don't have permissions for the folder that it's in. I can, however, use nano via the terminal and modify the file without any issues. I don't want to set read/write permissions on /etc to everyone, so how do I make it so TextEdit (and thus other programs having the same problem) can write to that file?
View 6 Replies View Relatedfile permissions - how to edit a user account that is creating files with permissions that are not wanted anymore. i understand how to reset permissions on files or folders, but i do not understand how to reset the permissions a user is "creating". ie, each time this user creates a file, the file needs to be manually edited for its permissions. so i need to edit the user's settings, but i can't find where to do that. this is a home office setup. we have two users with admin privileges. our imac is acting as a server of sorts - it holds common files that need to be edited by both users. the other user is typically working on shared files from a macbook over wifi.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn short, I can't import any new files into itunes except for from the itunes store. When I downloaded an mp3 online, and tried to drag and drop it to itunes in order to import, it says "Attempting to copy to the disc Macintosh HD failed: You do not have enough access priveleges for this operation. I am the only admin on the computer, i have gone through music>itunes>Itunes music and made read/write for me on all three under "get info" when trying to import a CD it says "the song couldn't be converted, you don't have write access to your itunes media folder or a folder within it" I spotlighted "itunes media" and found nothing. Next I repaired disk permissions from disk utility, still the same problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need serious help. I've tried just about everything I've read online. When I try to run iTunes, it claims that iTunes is on a locked disk or that I don't have write permissions. I've went into the secutiry tab and such and gave myself full control, yet it still isn't working. It also won't let me unclick the "Read Only" box. I'm on Windows 7.

I have noticed something strange in Snow Leopard when dealing with file permissions in a Get Info window. Previously, in Leopard, when I would Get Info on a file and open the "Sharing and Permissions" tab, I would be unable to edit permissions until I had clicked on the lock icon and entered the admin password. However, I have found that in Snow Leopard, I can edit permissions with the lock icon closed. It doesn't even ask for a password to change file permissions. I have been searching around to see if anyone else had noticed this, but to no avail. I am concerned, as not having to enter a password to change file permissions could be a bit of a security issue, couldn't it? I also don't believe it to be specific to my machine, as I have access to another Snow Leopard computer and it is the same there.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to edit permissions on a folder via the Server App, and having some trouble. I can access all of the other folders on the shared volume and edit them just fine, but on one folder the OK button is always grayed out. Here's what I'm doing: In Server App, selecting the server under StorageChoosing the drive I want to editSelecting the folder I wantUnder the gear, choosing Edit Permissions. It shows me the list of users just fine and I can see that there's a problem, but no matter what changes I make it won't let me click OK. It also won't let me click + to add a new user. This works fine on all of the other folders on this same drive. Should I just reset all of the ACLs for that folder in the Terminal and try again?

I have been working on a project in iMovie for a few days, and it has been working perfectly. Today, I opened up my project and I could not play the project (the red line would move, but no picture would show up in the upper right hand corner box) and ALL of the options in the "share" tab were gray and unable to click them. Many options in the "edit" and "file" tabs were unable to be clicked as well.
Another project i completed months ago is working perfectly. The clips in the events play/show up on the window in the upper right hand corner
When ever I copy some files or create a file in my external USB drive which is a FAT32 one. file permissions are not preserved. All files/folders has 777 are permission. Is this how it work in mac or am I missing something?

i used to have a bunch of files on my hard drive before i sold my mac pro
i backed everything up on an external hard drive so i can keep it until i received my imac. now i have my imac, and when i try to transfer over the files to my imac, or another external hard drive, sometimes the copying stops and says something along the lines of "you do not have permission to copy this file"
so i guess some of my files got messed up, putting them in "Read only" mode.
i know i can go to "Get info" and then manually change it to "read and write" mode but honestly theres so many files it would take a lot of time.
is there a script, or an app i can run that could scan my whole external hard drive so it will go thru each file in their own specific folder and change the permissions to "read all write all" without me doing it manually one by one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are running OSX mavericks 10.9.4 which connects a network windows share on login.
I have see the share and navigate through its files fine however, if I try drag a file to the root of the share the green plus does not appear and I am unable to copy it. I am however, able to copy it to a sub folder within the same view.
Permissions are definitely correct and have the same permissions as the sub folders previously mentioned. If I go into a sub folder and back to the root, I am then able to copy the file as intended. It is based in an AD environment so these are all new users viewing the share from the MAC for the very first time.

I use a text edit file as a to-do list; however, it doesn't play nice. When I click on its icon, it pops up somewhere other than where I want it. I've tried "Preferences" and TextEdit help on and off line. I can't find any info on it. I'm probably not using the exact words that 'help' would recognize. I've tried saying "Simon Says" too, but that doesn't work either.

I am a Mac convert now two years and was beginning to truly believe Macs are impervious to the hair pulling and teeth gnashing so often associated with PC's but...I have been repeatedly trying to write to my WorldBook NAS which has previously worked beautifully but everytime I try to write anything remotely large, I get the message,
"An unexpected error has occurred the file could not be written to the disk. Error Code 51"
My NAS is 2TB and attached to my D-Link wireless. I have used it exclusively for my iTunes library and it has worked very nicely.I experienced this the first time with one of three movies I am adding to my library. After a couple tries, I decided to let iTunes copy it to the folder in it's process of adding it to the library and it worked fine. The following day I repeated the process and now I get the message through iTunes as well.

I used to only have one user account (user1) on my iMac, but recently I made a second one (user2) that is intended to eventually replace my original user account. (Why I did this: Photoshop CS3 was unusable with errors, and after trying every fix known to man [aside from a clean install of Leopard], the only thing that worked was to use Photoshop on a new user account ... weird, I know.)
Here is my problem: I moved all my files from /user1/ to /user2/ (e.g. - photos from /user1/Pictures/ I moved to /user2/Pictures/, and so on...). The problem is that most of these files do not have user2 listed under "Sharing and Permission" when I get information about the files (so I don't have permission to access them).
I tried this:
* Clicking on an enclosing folder and going to 'get info'
* Adding user2 and setting permissions to read & write
* Clicking the gear symbol and selecting 'apply to enclosed items...'
Didn't work; 'user2' did not get added to the user list for 'Sharing and Permissions' of the enclosed items. In the meantime, I did this:
* I noticed that every item already has the 'staff' group listed (with read only permission)
* I changed staff from 'read only' to 'read & write'
* I clicked the gear symbol and applied to enclosed items.
Now all enclosed items allow staff to read & write. This is ok for now, but I'd rather just allow 'user2' permissions when needed, instead of allowing the whole 'staff' group (whatever staff group includes... ?) Also, is there anything else I should know about transferring user accounts that I might not have thought of?
I sent my files from my PC to a MAC in mp4 format. However, I cannot open the files with quicktime (only with VLC) and I cannot figure out how to edit the videos using iMovie because iMovie will not let my import them.
