Intel Mac :: Re-setting Up OS Snow Leopard Or Lion?
May 21, 2012
After having reformated my HD, I want to set-up again the OS on a 2 years old MacBookPro, delivered then with start-up DVDs (Leopard or Snow Leopard). In between this Mac was upgraded to Lion. Can I use the original disks? Or do I have to use the hidden Lion partition?

I have a Mac Pro which I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I have an HP Multi-Function 2840 hooked up to the router via ethernet. This printer previously worked through Leopard.
Now, my understanding is that for SL, the drivers for this printer are in the operating system and can not be downloaded from HP.
How do I set this up as a network printer? I would like to be able to print from my other computers in the house as well.
Please Note: Snow Leopard only provides drivers for the printing function of this machine. I am going to have to revert to other means to use this device to scan.

I can't be the only person experiencing this, but I can't find anything on the 'net about it.  I've got a 15" MacBook Pro (early 2011) and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. About 1/3rd of the time when I logoff and go back to the Snow Leopard login window, the purple Aurora background is smaller than the screen's displayable area, and pushed up into the top left corner of the screen. A wide band of solid blue takes up the right side of the screen and a narrrower one appears along the bottom of the screen. Â
The login window still works, and if I log into a user, the user's desktop is also limited to that upper left part of the screen -- a roughly 9" x 7" area, instead of the 13" x 8" displayable area of the whole screen. The mouse pointer won't leave the (now limited) desktop area.Â
I've just figured out that the display resolution shown in System Preferences-->Displays has been changed from the normal/default setting of 1440 x 900 to a setting of 1024 x 768!  It happens when logging out of any of (at least) four different users, including two that are rarely used. Restarting the system sets everything back to normal again, as does using System Preferences to set the display resolution back to 1440 x 900. what could be causing the screen display resolution to change after logout?Â

my email server was recently hacked and the hosting company I use has sorted out a new server to use with the option of using SSL for incoming and outgoing mail.Â
Inputing the details of the standard incoming and outgoing mail servers is fine - I'm just trying to work out how I can input the SSL options?Â
Using Apple Mail 4.5 - how do I go about adding the Incoming Mail Server (SSL) (without a port number) and the Outgoing Mail Server (which does have a port number)?Â

I have an external webcam that I would like to use instead of the webcam built in to the iMac. For audio, I can go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input and select a device for sound input. With video though, there is no such option I can find. I can manually select the webcam when I use FaceTime or Skype, but I have to manually go into the preferences for each application every single time I open it. Neither application nor the operating system has a way of setting a default webcam that I can find.

As an administrator (without FileVault protection) on SnowLeopard, I created a standard user account (test user1) with FileVault protection. I just want to get familiar with it before creating real accounts. But as an administrtor I can't look at files created by test user1. I get a message that I don't have permission.
Do I need FileVault on for the administrator in order to do this?
If not, as an administrtor, why can't I see what's on other user is doing?
Is there a way as an administrator I can see what's files are downloaded, created, websites visited, etc? I'm aware of creating a user account with Parental controls, but would that give me the ability to see what's in the folder?

I inherited a LaserWriter Select and have tried in vain to set it up (I also inherited the Asant talk used to connect it to my wireless router). It worked fine with the Leopard set-up of the previous owner, but it won't do thing for me under Snow Leopard. Is there an incompatibility here, or does the printer just not like me?

I've just got a MBP 13. I was able to set the speed at which the applications open, so rather than the little icon in the dock bouncing 3 or 4 times it bounces twice then opens. I cannot find where I did this. Also is it ok to set it to the fastest if you like?

I turned on my mini, and it loaded as normal, but the date and time we're set to receive 12, 2000. Ny Internet was not connecting, apparently I need to redo it. There are a bunch of things asking for permission to accept incoming network connections (nfsd, named, nmbd, portmap, mDNSResponder) I don't even know what these are. Should I allow permissions? I am hoping that is all that is wrong, at least that is all I have noticed. Do you think I have a virus? Or is this just a glitch with the update from yesterday?

I recently tried to use my final cut express program and it would not open.I called Apple and I was told that it ran in my older iMac because I had Snow Leopard installed in it and I upgraded to Lion, now, my new iMac doesn't have Snow Leopard in it and Im out of luck. Not only do I like FCE, I learned to use it and I want to continue doing so, I bought it from the Apple store and later I also purchased the upgrade, can I have both OS's in my mac and choose the start up disk like I did iwth OS9 and OSX?

Unable to retain "short year settings" in Preferences > Language & Text > Formats. Â
Am able to set the year setting in the customize window to two digits with the pop-up menu for the year, which then appears correctly when the customize window is closed. However, after the Preference window is closed and re-opened, the year appears in 4 digits. The is occurring on one of the accounts. Â
The same procedure was used to set the date formats in the Administrator account, where it worked correctly.Â

Currently I have an iMac 10.5.8 with an Intel Core 2 Duo and 2Go Ram. Since January I didn't had much system updates because my software is apparently too old ... And I am kind of paranoid about the Trojans that I might have because I use the old version plus Safari is getting blocked very often. So I decided to by first Snow Leopard and then Lion. The thing is that I live in Norway & I will have to use the Norwegian apple store to by those programs but my OS X is in French. So I was wondering if I will be able to choose my language or the whole system will be automatically in Norwegian? The second question is to know if it is difficult to upgrade? I am a Mac user because I don't have any clues about the computers and Mac is always working. I read some complaints from people who after installing Snow Leopard couldn't use properly their printers or other apps... Is there is something I (completely ignorant person) should be aware of before doing the upgrade? Â

I received the Snow Leopard upgrade disc from Apple. The instructions read to simply upgrade to SL version 10.6.8 after running the installation disc, and then to purchase the Lion upgrade from the Mac App. However, this SL version seems to be 10.5.8, and none of the 10.6.8 or lower updates will work. I found a 10.6.1, but that won't install either. They all say that I need OS 10.6 and I can't find it. I have a 2009 iMac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

I've been reading a lot on the process of downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard. But it all seems a bit blurry as no actual facts are posted, and I couldn't find out if its only possible for machines that did not come with Lion pre-installed (mine did). I'm really keen on downgrading so I can get back to work. The compatibility with most of the audio plugins I use is not good, so I'd rather just keep working with the previous operating system. I have read a lot of the other threads on this matter, but the main point here is if it is possible to downgrade in a machine that came with Lion preinstalled. I've seen videos on how to do it, but they don't mention if it works on any Mac or only in those that, at some point, already had a version of Snow Leopard installed.

I have a new iMac and I want to transfer my Apple Mail from my older Mac Book Pro running Snow Leopard to it. I've zipped up the Mail folder that was under Library and I found out how to access the hidden Library on my iMac. I see mail has changed a bit in Lion and before I unzip my mail folder into /Library/Mail, I want to make sure I won't screw anything up.Â
