I inherited a LaserWriter Select and have tried in vain to set it up (I also inherited the Asant talk used to connect it to my wireless router). It worked fine with the Leopard set-up of the previous owner, but it won't do thing for me under Snow Leopard. Is there an incompatibility here, or does the printer just not like me?
View 1 RepliesI have just setup a Time Capsule to host a local wireless network to replace an older wireless/wired mixture.
The network works a treat, and our four office computers all pick it up without issue. I have plugged a USB Epson Inkjet printer into the TC's USB port, and all the networked computers can print to it without issue.
However, we also have a trusty LaserWriter 8500 that we use. I plugged this into the first ethernet (LAN) port on the TC , and expected just to be able to add it in the Print & Fax Preference pane. Sadly though, this is not the case. The printer cannot be found in the Default Browser, or the AppleTalk tab (AppleTalk has been turned on for AirPort).
I turned on the aforementioned feature and I've been trying to use it. I can do it on my multitouch mac and the character recognition works fine (even the suggested ones) but how do I select it? I'm getting so frustrated with this.

I have a Mac Pro which I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I have an HP Multi-Function 2840 hooked up to the router via ethernet. This printer previously worked through Leopard.
Now, my understanding is that for SL, the drivers for this printer are in the operating system and can not be downloaded from HP.
How do I set this up as a network printer? I would like to be able to print from my other computers in the house as well.
Please Note: Snow Leopard only provides drivers for the printing function of this machine. I am going to have to revert to other means to use this device to scan.
I can't be the only person experiencing this, but I can't find anything on the 'net about it. I've got a 15" MacBook Pro (early 2011) and Snow Leopard 10.6.8. About 1/3rd of the time when I logoff and go back to the Snow Leopard login window, the purple Aurora background is smaller than the screen's displayable area, and pushed up into the top left corner of the screen. A wide band of solid blue takes up the right side of the screen and a narrrower one appears along the bottom of the screen.
The login window still works, and if I log into a user, the user's desktop is also limited to that upper left part of the screen -- a roughly 9" x 7" area, instead of the 13" x 8" displayable area of the whole screen. The mouse pointer won't leave the (now limited) desktop area.
I've just figured out that the display resolution shown in System Preferences-->Displays has been changed from the normal/default setting of 1440 x 900 to a setting of 1024 x 768! It happens when logging out of any of (at least) four different users,including two that are rarely used. Restarting the system sets everything back to normal again, as does using System Preferences to set the display resolution back to 1440 x 900. what could be causing the screen display resolution to change after logout?

my email server was recently hacked and the hosting company I use has sorted out a new server to use with the option of using SSL for incoming and outgoing mail.
Inputing the details of the standard incoming and outgoing mail servers is fine - I'm just trying to work out how I can input the SSL options?

After having reformated my HD, I want to set-up again the OS on a 2 years old MacBookPro, delivered then with start-up DVDs (Leopard or Snow Leopard). In between this Mac was upgraded to Lion. Can I use the original disks? Or do I have to use the hidden Lion partition?

I have an external webcam that I would like to use instead of the webcam built in to the iMac. For audio, I can go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input and select a device for sound input. With video though, there is no such option I can find. I can manually select the webcam when I use FaceTime or Skype, but I have to manually go into the preferences for each application every single time I open it. Neither application nor the operating system has a way of setting a default webcam that I can find.

As an administrator (without FileVault protection) on SnowLeopard, I created a standard user account (test user1) with FileVault protection. I just want to get familiar with it before creating real accounts. But as an administrtor I can't look at files created by test user1. I get a message that I don't have permission.
Do I need FileVault on for the administrator in order to do this?
If not, as an administrtor, why can't I see what's on other user is doing?
Is there a way as an administrator I can see what's files are downloaded, created, websites visited, etc? I'm aware of creating a user account with Parental controls, but would that give me the ability to see what's in the folder?
I've just got a MBP 13. I was able to set the speed at which the applications open, so rather than the little icon in the dock bouncing 3 or 4 times it bounces twice then opens. I cannot find where I did this. Also is it ok to set it to the fastest if you like?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI turned on my mini, and it loaded as normal, but the date and time we're set to receive 12, 2000. Ny Internet was not connecting, apparently I need to redo it. There are a bunch of things asking for permission to accept incoming network connections (nfsd, named, nmbd, portmap, mDNSResponder) I don't even know what these are. Should I allow permissions? I am hoping that is all that is wrong, at least that is all I have noticed. Do you think I have a virus? Or is this just a glitch with the update from yesterday?

Unable to retain "short year settings" in Preferences > Language & Text > Formats.
Am able to set the year setting in the customize window to two digits with the pop-up menu for the year, which then appears correctly when the customize window is closed. However, after the Preference window is closed and re-opened, the year appears in 4 digits. The is occurring on one of the accounts.
The same procedure was used to set the date formats in the Administrator account, where it worked correctly.
Is there a way to change the default setting on Time Machine so I can backup files when I want to rather than when it wants to?

You know how in the Finder sidebar (the leftmost column in column view) you have all those objects that are displayed by the Finder? You've got your Devices group and then your Shared group and your Places group? And under your Places header you have your Desktop folder and your username folder and your Music folder and your Movies folder and your Applications folder? And when you click on any one of these folders in the sidebar, the Finder displays contents of its corresponding real folder in the rest of the window?
Well, my Mac Mini won't display the "Movies" folder. All the other folders seem to work as I described, but, if I click on the "Movies" folder, it does not get selected. Whatever was previously selected stays selected. It's not dimmed, but it behaves as if it were. Is that weird or what?
It gets worse. You know how you can add additional folders to the sidebar? Well, I thought I'd put a fresh "Movies" folder into the sidebar to see what happened. So I located the real ~/Movies folder and dragged it to the sidebar. Now I have two "Movies" folders in the sidebar. They look different -- different icons. One works fine and the other refuses to be selected. And -- get this! -- I cannot delete either one!
We had an external disk crash the other day that had all our movies on it, so that's probably when this behavior started.
No function is impaired: one of the two "Movies" folders works fine. It's just weird to have two of them, and one of them not allow itself to be selected.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 and discovered I cannot print to my Laserwriter 4/600 using Asantetalk connected to ethernet (which is connected via a router to my AirPort Extreme (round, white circa 2005). If I use one of my older MacBooks to share the printer with my new one, then it prints fine, no problem at all. It's direct printing that's the problem. I also did NOT have a problem setting up my MBP (OS 10.5.8) to print from the LW when I got it in 2008. What I've done is: - Go to Sys. Prefs > Print & Scan > + printer in Printers list, select "IP". At that point I have tried ALL of the options, IPP, LPD and HP, which I detail below. With each one I have tried, I have had to manually Select Printer Software. When I select Apple Laserwriter 4/600, I have had to also manually give it a Name in order for me to Add the printer. At that point, here's what happens when I try IPP: - I get the message 'Unable to verify the printer on your network. Unable to connect to " due to an error. Would you like to create the queue?' I select Continue. - It then says it's setting up the printer, and "Make sure your printer's options are accurately shown here so you can take full advantage of them." Memory Configuration: I select 6 MB, then the OK button. - Then it says it's setting up the printer. - I then try to print. - I open up the printer monitor, it acts like it's going to print, but then Pauses. My document stays in the queue, and when I try to Resume Printer, it acts like it's going to print again, but then get a message something like "The printer's URI is incorrect or no longer exists." The it pauses it again. I try again. Pause. and it will just keep doing this and never print. Keep in mind, after I try each method and it doesn't work, I delete both the print job and the printer from the list. So I delete the printer, try adding a new one with LPD: - It doesn't give me a message that it's unable to verify the printer on my network, which seems good, but then when I try to print, it says it's copying print data, it's connected to the printer, and then it pauses. I keep trying, but it keeps pausing it. When I try the HP, like the IPP it tells me it's unable to verify the printer on my network. I Continue anyway, it acts as if it's setting it up, but nothing happens, so I hit the "Configure" button. I then select my memory configuration. It seems to take, so I try to print. It acts like it's processing the job, but then says the printer is busy. I went to this page: I hope I have given enough information about my ystem and printer. I have scoured these forums and Google, and cannot find a solution to my problem that works. I am hoping I don't have to print only using a shared printer because that is a bit of a hassle since I don't plan on always having an older MBP running as a server.

I've tried searching to no avail. When I use Finder, it's in List View.
I vastly preferred the Leopard version of selection in that only the filename was used to select a row.
If you clicked anywhere else it would not select the row and you could easily right-click to add new folders etc.
Snow Leopard did away with this functionality and changed it to a full row select.
Is there any way to go back to the Leopard way of doing things?
... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.
