The latest software update for Mac OS X (10.6.8) upgraded the version of java from Apple and broke an application used for work. Are the previous or older versions of java available from Apple for download?

For future updates, Is there a way to modify the software update process to install the the new version but leave the old version in place?

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Is it possible (and easy) to install the system to one disk, and the applications and users to another disk?Or do some applications prefer to be on the same disk as the system?

Apr 23, 2009

Anyone have any idea of a feature that was originally going to be in Boot Camp, allowing it to switch very quickly between a hibernated version of Windows and a sleeping version of Leopard, is gonna be back for Snow Leopard?

Apparently the feature was dropped before the final version...

This would've been awesome, would love to see it back...

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mounting RAM Disks As 'notremovable'

May 12, 2012

I am replacing my G5 (10.5) Xserve with a late 2008 Xserve (10.6). This server is primarily a web server, with a small amount of mail traffic.I keep my 'webfolder' on a RAM disk. All of my pages are dymanic php/mysql, so they can't be cached. But reading from RAM is so fast, you'd never know it.This is the command I used in 10.5 to create a 1 GB RAM disk at boot:
/usr/sbin/diskutil erasevolume HFS+ "web-ram" `/usr/bin/hdiutil attach -notremovable -nomount ram://2200000`
Not the "notremovable", that flag makes the system treat the mounted disk image (or in this case, the RAM disk), like a real physical disk, and not a mounted disk image. When you use this flag, the ram disk will actually show up with a regular hard drive icon. Without this flag, it shows up as a white disk image. But this flag doesn't work in 10.6. According to the man page, it's still there. But when I use it, I get permissions errors. I am using it with sudo (from the command line, or as root via lanuchdeamons). As I look closer at my errors, It appears that what might be happening is that the diskutil command is being run as root, but the hdiutil command inside of it, is not.

Anyway this is about more than just the icon. When the ram disk is mounted as a real disk, its harder to eject, which is good because it's my web folder and I don't want it going anywhere. AND when its mounted that way, I can use time machine to back it up. Which works out to be a great system for that.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Copying Files Between Hard Disks Interrupted By Error Code -36

Mar 18, 2012

This error probably indicates a hardware problem or some system malfunction. I usually try to find out what exactly went wrong to take measures to avoid the repetition of the same problem. Exchanging the HD and restoring the sytem may be the quicker solution, but I would miss an opportunity to reconfigure my system to make it more robust.

The system in question is a MacMini (Model A1347) with Os-X-Server 10.6.7. and 2 physical HDs: HD1 has 2 Partitions, the smaller for the server OS, the larger for the Shares (We use the MacMini only as a file server). HD2 is not used (was kept in reserve for cases like this).

That there may be a problem manifested itself first when the mounting of the shares on HD1 became suddenly slow (within 2-3 days) and eventually failed. I first tried to copy all the files from the shares on HD1 to HD2 before attempting any repair actions. Most of the files copied properly but a few failed with error (-36). Those few can be restored from backups, so there is no data loss. Remains the question, what went wrong?

It may be pure coincidence but just before the File-Server failed there was an attempt to upgrade a 3rd party software on one of the clients (17'' MacBook Pro / OS X 10.6.8) to a newer version. Could be that new version was part of the problem because the data files of this 3rd party software are stored on one of the shares on HD1 and the data file format has been changed between the versions. For obvious reasons I need to make sure that this data file conversion was not the cause of the problem?

1) first check the HD1 with a different tool than DiskUtility (It thinks the HD1 is in perfect shape), TechTool Pro or DiskWarrier comes to my mind, any reason to prefer one over the other?

2) Hopefully those tools can reliably test whether the HD1 is damaged or not. If it is the former the HD1 replacement option is the way to go and there is no more reason the 3rd party software may have been involved. However if HD1 is not damaged I'm left with the uncertainty of what exactly lead to the problem..?

3) Is there any check I should do before I just re-format the HD and re-install the OS and switch back to  an earlier version of the 3rd party software to be on the safe side?

Sep 3, 2009

Just a quick question; I just received a SL upgrade DVD for one of my Macs, in the post, and it had the disc number: "2Z691-6557-A". I was a bit surprised that the DVD just came in a simple paper sleeve, tossed into a padded envelope with 2nd class postage. Is this the experience of others?. Also, is this particular upgrade DVD (with the same disc number as mine) capable of erase and install?. I don't like doing upgrades, I'd rather start fresh.
