On my 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac when updating to 10.7.4 with Software update I lost all my display settings except 960x600 and 1920x1200. This affects all user accounts. I also downloaded the combo updater and reinstalled but have the same results. How can I recover the additional settings?

Can't find OSX disks so I can't reinstall Mail before Monday as my disks are at my office. Tried to replace Mail from Time Machine to no avail. Running a iMac, 10.6.8 with external CD drive and iomega eternal drive as my backup.Â

Installed an update for WePrint Server APP which popped up onscreen. Downloaded update, installer program loaded, selected drive, and install was successful. Closed the install program window (Safari open in background along with other programs running in dock, but not on screen), but the Installer menu bar remained on the top of the screen. Lost the OSX Lion Status / menu bar, the Apple icon, time, user, etc. Was able to use Safari, but not without hesitation.
The Safari menu bar at the top of the screen never appeared while in Safari, the Install Program menu did not disappear, even thought there was no evidence that the program was still running. No icon in dock, no hidden screen page or window. Closed all the running programs in the docks, and checked Force Quit, (ctrl+alt+esc) and no installer program remained. Unable to shut off or restart the computer without using the on / off button on the back of the intel mac monitor. Once rebooted all seems well.

For no obvious reason, my intel Imac with 10.5.5 seems to have forgotten all my personal preferences, favorites, dock items, address book items and calendar entries - oh and email has forgotten me too! View 5 Replies View RelatedI just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?
I changed the short name of my home directory oblivious to the consequences. I have searched the internet high and low and have found a few threads already posted (including an Apple support article) that relate directly to this issue. However, although the root of the problem is the same in that I changed the short name, the outcome is slightly different and I can't restore all my preferences in the manner detailed in these articles. I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11. Here is exactly what I did and what is going on:
1. I went into Get Info. in the home directory icon in Finder.
Say the original name was john, I changed it to Fred.
2. Since then, when I open any applications such as Skype, iTunes, iCalendar etc. all of the settings have been reverted to default making it appear as if I've only bought the Mac. However all my documents and music files are still there and can be accessed normally in the newly named directory. My desktop and widgets are also fine.
3. Now when I go to Macintosh HD and click into users there are 3 things:
- The newly named home directory Fred with the house icon.
- A folder with the old home directory's name, that being john. Inside there are Documents, Library, Music and Pictures folders but only the Library folder seems to contain anything important, which I hope are all my preferences. The other three are effectively empty. Like I said I can access my music files etc. normally.
- Lastly the shared folder.
I haven't turned off or restarted my laptop because reading on threads it appears as if I can cause damage or end up not being able to access my mac. The two solutions I've found online are these: [URL]. The problem with this one for me is that I can't rename the new directory with the old name - it just won't let me. [URL]. The problem with this solution and another I found is that I think they are assuming the old directory - john - is in fact still a directory but in my case it is a folder.
recently my macbook charger has broken so i bought a new one and no matter how long i charge it it dies instantly as soon as i take out the charger and when it died i lost my system preferences app and i cannot find my disc

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was just doing a superduper backup which failed halfway through because i didnt realise my wd passport drive that was plugged in was auto backing stuff up and there must have been a conflict. Now, I dont know what to do. Email accounts.gone. Any registered apps, still there but reg details gone, any and all system preferences (like trackpad setup just came to mind) gone. Dock and all the items in it and crap I made to ,make it look fancy. gone. Stuff that loads at the stuff...gone.
I know this must have to do with my user directory but wtf? I know my timemachine backup is fine as i did one before all the problems, but is my superduperbackup screwed? I cant stress how screwed I am, I got reports due right before xmas and im like at square 1 now.
When I try to select display in system pref. the display window will open and then close without letting me make any changes.

I have a 24" LED Cinema Display and can no longer control the brightness settings in OSX I believe when I applied the recent java/bluetooth updates the slider disappeared upon reboot. I did some searching and can't come up with a way to get it back. I'm using a 15" Unibody MBP, and the brightness slider for that screen is available and does work. I also tried setting the keyboard shortcuts on my main keyboard (external) to turn up/down the brightness but they won't function at all.
I have tried zapping the PRAM, repairing permissions, and disconnecting/reconnecting the display, as well as booting with no external display and nothing has made the slider reappear. I also logged-in as a different user and the slider is not there for the Cinema on that profile either. I really, really hope I don't have to reinstall OSX to get rid of this but I'm out of ideas. The worst of it is that I turned down the brightness to less than half (when it worked) becuase I had a headache and now it's stuck there!

I bought a mini DVI-VGA adapter so I could connect my Sony LCD Multi Function Display and my Macbook together.The connection works fine, but I am having a serious problem with the display. The monitor shows the wallpaper of my macbook but does not show anything I open. So for example, the wall paper is there, but if I open Safari, it doesn't reflect this on the monitor. Only when I try to change the display preferences on my macbook does something show up on the monitor.

In Finder > Preferences I have "Hard Disks" unchecked, and "External Drives" checked. I have plugged in an ethernet cable to send this message. The machine that the airport is connected to is a pre intel mac mini. I am sending this from my imac. This morning I performed a 'Software Update' on my Macbook Pro and 6 new items were updated. The Mac then asked me to restart so I did but when it came back on I logged in as normal but it won't connect to my wifi unless I type in the password. I've tried Utilities > keychain manager but all I get is 'Access to this item is restricted' (when I click on show password and login again). My ipad and iphone are still okay and can access the wifi fine.

im using that converter which converts the mac port into VGA and im using a VGA to the tv and its only showing the screensaver. NOTHING ELSE. Also strangly enough it does show DISPLAYS when I open the prefrences.
