View 8 RepliesI have a 24" LED Cinema Display and can no longer control the brightness settings in OSX I believe when I applied the recent java/bluetooth updates the slider disappeared upon reboot. I did some searching and can't come up with a way to get it back. I'm using a 15" Unibody MBP, and the brightness slider for that screen is available and does work. I also tried setting the keyboard shortcuts on my main keyboard (external) to turn up/down the brightness but they won't function at all.
I have tried zapping the PRAM, repairing permissions, and disconnecting/reconnecting the display, as well as booting with no external display and nothing has made the slider reappear. I also logged-in as a different user and the slider is not there for the Cinema on that profile either. I really, really hope I don't have to reinstall OSX to get rid of this but I'm out of ideas. The worst of it is that I turned down the brightness to less than half (when it worked) becuase I had a headache and now it's stuck there!
The issue is with the brightness keys and the brightness slider controls. It appears that after the 10.4 upgrade the main LCD on some PBs and iBooks stops working. In my case the attached screen lost the ability to adjust brightness, but my external 20" LCD is fine. It looks like two things have happened. The association between the keys (F1 and F2) and the code for controlling brightness somehow got disconnected and/or the "capability" of the mac to adjust the brightness of the attached LCD got lost in the upgrade. We've tried repair permissions, rebooting, new users to no avail.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently noticed that my mac book pro, 17" display, with Dual 2.66 Ghz i7 processors is running slower than usual. I ran disk utility and onyx and everything is fine. When I run apps in general things seem ok except for Safari, which crawls at times and I get a lot of spinning beach balls. Seemlingly a very common problem lately. In trying to locate the source of the problem, I went to my preferences to see what OSX thought of my system. Low and behold, it thinks that I only have one CPU!!! The OS thinks I have 1 CPU where the apps know that I have 2 CPUs. When I am running apps that display the CPUs, (i.e. Activity Monitor, video apps, disk burning apps, etc) they all show 4 cores as expected. why the system would be incorrectly displaying only one i7 CPU? This has happened in recent weeks. The last time I looked (weeks ago) it correctly showed 2 i7 CPUs. I have reboted my machine several times already, so that's not it.

I am trying to get all my devices working together on the cloud and syncing when plugged to eachother. I schedule a meeting in iCal and it doesn't go over to the other devices. In addition, when I try to go to apple and set up the cloud, it tells me to go to the Apple Preferences and select the iCloud icon. I don't have one on my laptop.

I found the setting under Displays to automatically adjust brightness, but is there a way to set this different for Battery or Power Adapter? I would like to keep this option on for using the Battery, but would like the display at a constant level when using the Power Adapter.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently, after about 5 minutes of use (not sitting idle), my MacBook's screen will go very dim. I hit the buttons on the keyboard to take the brightness all the way up, but it doesn't get much brighter and there's only one thing that I can do to make the screen go brighter: I go into System Preferences and click Display. The second I click that, the brightness returns without me doing anything in the Display section, so after Display comes up, I just close it out and the screen brightness is fine for a while. It seems to do this after the lid has been closed for a while and then starts dimming again after opening the lid and using it for about 5 minutes. Is there a way to fix the auto-dim mode without disabling it? MacBook (white) is running Leopard 10.5.8 with all the latest updates.
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing 10.5.1, no problem up until now (new 2.8 iMac). Working all day with Adobe Lightroom 1.3.1, again, no prior problems. The computer froze, which I noted when the screensaver when I left to go eat dinner stayed static without fading out to a new picture. After force quitting and restarting, I went to the System Prefs and when I went to the Desktop/Screensaver section, I got a blank window. I confirmed all the other System Prefs icons work fine. It's as if the Desktop/Screensaver settings are erased/gone/whatever.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought my MacBook Pro in 2009. My desktop and screensaver preferences were working and then all of a sudden disappeared (after a year or so).I've read a lot about re-installing Mac OS X and a lot of other tricks. Can someone tell me which one is the most reliable and least risky? I'm not very tech-savy and worried that somehow some of my other applications or options will disappear.
Until now I have been changing my desktop pictures using iPhoto or by right-clicking on a picture in the internet.

Just upgraded to Lion on my desktop machine (iMac) and laptop (MacBook Pro). iCloud is working fine between my laptop and mobile devices (iPhone and iPad), but not with my desktop iMac. This is most obvious with iCal, which still tries to sync with MobileMe (even though the account info says its been upgraded to iCloud.

I have setup the 23i cinema display with mac pro. I have connected the USB and firewire cable to mac pro.. and keyboard is attached to back of the display. For some reason I cannot seem to adjust the brightness of the display from the keyboard (though I can do it from the side of the monitor). Neither can I see the brightness slider bar in the display settings. Also while the display is the the power led in the front blinks 3 times, then there is a little pause, and blinks 3 times again. How to fix this brightness control issue with the display. I have reseted PRAM and NVRAM... still nothing has changed. Also note I do not have and options tab for some reason.... (I have tried to plug the display's usb into the back 3 usb of the Macpro... still nothing)

My account setting icon is missing in system preferences. Can anyone provide me with advice on how to fix this problem. Also, whenever I start the computer it makes me log on now.
My macbook pro is an OSX 10.5.8, purchased in January 2009.
I noticed that System Preferences, App Store no longer shows a padlock at the lower left hand corner, yet other System Preference windows show the padlock. Why is that? Is there a way to restore the padlock? I have already tried "repairing" my install and the padlock did not come back.

2. Reset NVRAM - No change.
3. Apple Hardware Test - No problems found.
4. The same machine when booted in Windows (via Bootcamp/CSM-BIOS) plays perfectly and shows Cirrus Logic devices and the HDA devices. This should eliminate hardware issues.

I've just acquired a new MacBook Pro with all the trimmings, and I've been importing my iTunes library from my old Windows PC, for the most part successfully.
The one missing piece is that iTunes for Mac does not have a Books icon in the ULH corner toolbar, and when I go into Preferences there's no category "Books" for me to check.

My 2008 Mac Pro recently stopped producing any sound.
The startup chime is silent. No sound comes from the speakers at all and the line out/in options in system sound preferences are missing, although it still lists my Logitech webcam microphone and the volume meter for it responds to sound changes.
Could the sound chip on the logic board have stopped working?
Could it be a virus or a software conflict? I haven't updated the system recently or installed new software, but Skype has been acting erratically and has crashed a few times.
The missing line in/out devices in the sound preferences seems like it might be a hardware problem.
I have tried all of the normal things like checking cables and resetting pram but no change.
I have the same condition whether I boot into my primary drive or into the clone (made before the sound stopped working) on a separate drive or into Windows through Bootcamp.
If the logic board integrated sound is broken, can I add a sound card to take over the audio for everything (startup chime, audio from software and audiovisual sources, Skype, etc.)?
Basically what I want to do is sync my Apple Cinema Display's brightness with my MacBook ambient light brightness control. So when the brightness of my MacBook changes because of ambient lighting, my secondary monitor changes with it. Is this possible? Is there a software that does this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI thought Apple said that the brightness will go brighter when it's darker, and get dimmer when it's brighter. Why is mine doing the opposite?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe reason I am asking is that I am using a Spyder colorimeter to calibrate my monitor and it is asking me which controls exist on the display:
-brightness
-contrast
-backlight
My thinking is that F1 and F2 control the backlight level and not the "brightness" level, if you get what I mean.
Just had apple replacing the display on my rev b air due lose hinges, I think this new display much brighter then the old display. It is just a psychological thing? or does the screen actually losses brightness over time/usgae?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 24inch LCD ACD display connected to my Mac Pro. This display all used to work OK, but now, read on. I had to send this 24inch LCD ACD display away to have the panel replaced. Since it has returned when I look in About This Mac/Displays it shows that I have an iMac connected as the display and now the brightness cannot be controlled. If the 24inch LED ACD is connected to my Macbook it all works as it should
does keeping a high brightness level all the time effect performance or display?
