Intel Mac :: Software Update, Mail And Some System Preferences Not Working?
May 18, 2012
Woke up the other morning and launched Mail and received the window below. Tried to check software updates and got the same thing. All other apps work fine. Can't find OSX disks so I can't reinstall Mail before Monday as my disks are at my office. Tried to replace Mail from Time Machine to no avail. Running a iMac, 10.6.8 with external CD drive and iomega eternal drive as my backup.
this is macbook pro 10.7.3 ... after update 10.7.3 System Preferences is not working... it always Quit unexpectedly ... working only System Preferences version7.0 ... otherwise i have installed version 11.0 ...
When I try to change the keyboard system preferences or the bluetooth system preferences, the 'application' locks up (Doesn't bring up any details, force quit gets out of it). I've tried leaving it for ages to see if it eventually opens but it doesn't.
This means I can't use any bluetooth devices or change the keyboard shortcuts.
It only happens on one of my otherwise identical Mac Pros; the other is fine.
Any clues as to how to repair it? I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard but that didn't help. I didn't do a clean install though as I'd rather put up with it than make a clean install work with all the apps etc.
I accidentally (somehow) put system preferences in the trashcan and now it doesn't work. I've checked google, but I'm using OS Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and can't find anywhere how to fix it on this OS, anyone have a fix?
I tried the applications disk that comes with the computer as well, but no luck.
All items in system preferences don't get saved/applied. By now the dock doesn't appear on my screen, dashboard and spaces tabs don't work, desktop and screen saver don't save changes or apply so desktop is grey. Trackpad functions don't work.
I just bought a 2.4 MBP model a1260. When I got home i noticed the volume keys were not working, and then i noticed none of the function keys were working properly. (example, f12 shows an eject CD symbol). So, the keys are working but not doing the standard functions such as volume and brightness.
I have check and unchecked (and restarted) the "use all f1, f2 as standard function keys" to no result.
Some other wierd things that seem to be related are:
1. In the SOUND window in SYS PREFS all sound effects are greyed out. Under OUTPUT and INPUT it says no devices found.
2. When i go to the itunes store in itunes and i double click on a song, it wont play. Not only is there no volume, but song wont play. Its the same with my own music from my cds.
3. When i insert a DVD no volume control shows up.
And the last superwierd thing (haha) is that I reloaded leopard and when the computer restarted up after install there was no OSX music that normally plays as the video flys thru the starfield.
Headphones have no audio either.Sorry so long. The computer has no warranty of course.
so heres what happend. my macbook has been acting strange. freezing and sound not working at times. system preferemces quitting etc. and i just got it back from its thrid repair. THREE REPAIRS IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS> so i was downloading a game for my psp when i went to go get a bagel in the kitchen. i left for no less than a minute and when i came back the screen was black. i thought it just dimmed itself but no. i moved the trackpad clicked on all buttons click the mouse button everything. i noticed the light wasnt throbbing so im sure it wasnt sleeping. the light was just pure white(the sleep light) so i waited like 3 minutes than shut it down. do u know whats happening. i know now i will be getting it replaced but until then im trying to keep it working well enough that i can watch a ********** vid on youtube.
today i was on my macbook and realized that all of my alert sounds were not working. for example, if i got a new message in ichat or new email there would be no sound. Also, when i take a screenshot there is no sound, but there usually is one. My speakers are working because i am able to play music in itunes. Also, i system preferences, the search box does not show any results like it always does
I've noticed some more people have problems with their Wifi connection after upgrading, but since I'm experiencing some other difficulties as well, I've placed this in a new discussion."About this Mac" says that my iMac is running 10.7.4. I did however see a failure notice when I returned to my Mac that was doing the upgrade. Apparently something went wrong. So after restarting Mac these things happened:
1. No wifi connection. There are no networks to select from, even though another mac ( a mini) has no problems and connects like before).
2. Mail won't start.
3. iCal won't start.
4. None of the system preference panels load (e.g. General, Network, Users and accounts, etc).
I've hooked up my Mac to an airport express by cable which gives me internet access. For now I'll be installing the 10.7.4 Combo Update as suggested in another discussion, to see if this will fix things. For now, not ammused.

My dad just bought the $1999 model of the new MacBook Pro a few days ago. Previously he had a MacBook Pro with a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor in it. We used target disk mode to transfer all of the data over and everything went fine. The only problem now is in System Preferences when using the screen savers his favorite iTunes album artwork screen saver is not working saying there is no album artwork in iTunes which isn't true (I checked ). When in that preference it causes System Preferences to slow down to the point where I need to force quit it and it causes the application to crash.
On my 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac when updating to 10.7.4 with Software update I lost all my display settings except 960x600 and 1920x1200. This affects all user accounts. I also downloaded the combo updater and reinstalled but have the same results. How can I recover the additional settings?

System Preferences (or Finder) in OSX 10.6.8 appears corrupted - mouse will not activate any commands within any preference, close Finder windows (or open apps with a double click as it used to). No joy rebooting or resetting PRAM and NVRAM.
Preferences within another user account on the same iMac however appear to be working OK.
When I click on system preferences then screen saver the timer starts and I can never do anything. The timer goes and goes and never stops. Have to shut the system down and re-boot. No desktop photo. How to fix.
I have a problem with the system preferences. When I open any preference it receives the following message: "You can not open the Dock preferences, because the panel does not work on computers with a PowerPC processor." Except that I do not have Power PC, but Intel!
What can I do to be able to change preferences?

Can't open System Preferences - tried repair permissions with disk utility - no luck. In fact can't find System Preferences in the Applications list - only in the apple drop down from the desktop.
In my Safari preferences I have it set to open in my home page. But whenever I open safari it seems to go to the last website I visited. How do I get it to open in my home page.

I have a 2007 imac and have done all updates that I know of but the transition to icloud is not working very well.
1) icloud does not have an icon in system prefernces, it's still mobile me. Although there is a message that states the account has been moved, I cannot sync etc.
2) two of my email addresses will not stay connected in mail. Since moving to icloud I have had to reinstall them everyday.
3) I host three websites from iweb but since the change to icloud I cannot find my former account where I can access my web domain info that used to be easily found in my mobile me account page.
