OS X :: Does 64 Bit Eat Up The Battery Quicker

Aug 14, 2009

On snow leopard with my early 2008 mbp and it seems with 64 bit on, battery life is getting eaten quicker.

Can't really compare though as I haven't used it much with 32 bit.

Mac Pro :: Most Efficient Backup Workflow?

Jun 27, 2012

I've got a Mac Pro 2008 with four internal SATA drives which I back up with Deja Vu (don't care for Time Machine) on to four SATA drives housed in an Icy Dock. I back up all the key folders from Drive 1-Internal (users, apps, library, system, along with some other folders) but I do not have an OS installed on this drive. If my Drive 1-Internal fails, the option is to boot an OS from a DVD or USB drive and do a clean install onto an empty drive. I can then copy my backed up folders onto the newly-formatted drive.

The first issue is that you have to have a hard disk at your disposal that is either new or you're willing to wipe clean. The second concern is that it takes more time to do a clean install and transfer backed up files than if you had a backup drive with an OS installed that you could boot from.

What are the advantages of installing an OS on Drive 1-External? Doing this would mean having to run software updates on two separate drives? Apart from decreasing the downtime involved to reformat a new drive, isn't it preferable to do a clean install on the new main hard disk? Opinions?

Mac Pro :: Most Efficient SATA / RAM Configuration For Speed

Sep 15, 2008

I am getting heavily into 3D animation and modelling, and as such have purchased a 2.8Ghz 2008 Mac Pro 8-core. I currently have raid-0 my two 320Gb hard disks; I know it's not very secure, but I'm just in the setting up phase right now, so that doesn't matter. My question is this; is there a MASSIVE performance increase, when upgrading from the stock 2x1Gb FBDIMM sticks, to, say 16Gb in 2Gb sticks, or 32Gb in 4Gb sticks?. What is most noticable? Finally, what raid configuration is optimal for both speed and peace of mind?.

OS X :: Cancel Or Continue Options In System - Quicker Than Reaching For The Mouse Trackpad?

Jan 7, 2009

When I get a window popping up with an option e.g. do you want to delete this file etc. One option is highlighted (blue in my case) and the other not. In Windows I would press tab in order to switch and highlight the other option and then ht enter to select it. What is the equivalent in OSX? It will be quicker than reaching for the mouse/trackpad sometimes.

Hardware :: FireWire 800 Daisy - Chain Vs USB 2 - Which More Efficient?

Aug 23, 2010

I'm running two of these enclosures: [URL] each with 2x2TB drives in RAID0 (i.e. 4TB per enclosure). I use one 4TB array for my user files, and the other for TimeMachine. My user array is connected via FW800, my question is - is it more efficient to connect the other (TM) array via USB2 or via daisy chained FW800? The enclosures use the Oxford 934DSb chipset, which is capable of saturating the FW bus, so thats 100MBps. As i understand it very few interfaces are capable of saturating a USB2 bus such that practically speaking even FW400 gives greater real-world throughput than USB2, despite the 60Mbps difference in spec.

Since one is a TM volume, when backing up from the user array to the TM array will the data have to pass through the computer's controller? It definitely will if it's FW800 -> USB2, but will it have to if it's daisy chained FW800? I'm told this might not be the case as some FW controllers support P2P communication but i can't find too much info about it. Even if there is P2P support the OS needs to know the progress of file transfers and so forth so can it do this even if the drives are transferring via P2P or can it only monitor that sort of thing if the data goes through it's controller? Essentially is it up to the OS or the controller to select the optimal route for data? If it's up to the OS does Mac OS support FW P2P? That said, even if the data does have to go to the computer from one array and back through the daisy chain to the other array, is it still practically faster than the USB2 route?

Intel Mac :: Make Way Up To The Top And Most Recent?

Apr 24, 2012

if this is in the wrong section, I couldnt find a specific board to ask this  I do like the twitter app for the mac but just one I would like to change..The twitter app for the iOS when you bring it up it starts about 50 or so tweets (or about 1 hours worth) down and you gradually make your way up to the top and most recent

But when I do it for the mac app it just starts at the top and most recent - This might seem a crazy thing to ask but is there a way or another twitter client which starts about halfway down and i can gradually make my way up to the top and most recent
