The audio on my macbook suddenly stopped working. When I click on the audio adjuster, it won't even let me change the level (the little circle is white now, not blue).
But when I plug in headphones or an external speaker, everything works fine. I can once again adjust the audio and get sound
There was a red light eminating from the audio out jack for a while (last couple of days) but today, there is no longer a red light. Still no audio from the speakers.

I have owned my MacBook Pro since June 2010, and have always used a pair of independently powered (via adapter) external Dell speakers for audio output. Since upgrading to Lion about 1 month ago, I was having intermittent audio issues, which were resolved by re-starting my computer (not ideal but it worked). Today, the speakers just stopped working. The internal speakers work, but when I plug the externals into the headphone port, they don't produce sound. Earbuds in the same port also don't work (I know the earbuds are good). The external speakers are being recognized by the sound panel in system preferences.

I feel like I once had a PrefPane for this problem but just am having a hard time searching for it. Currently I have my heaphones jack Line-In routed to my AV Receiver for iTunes music in my room, but whenever I am YouTubing or other stuff while listening to music the System Sounds come out of my Loudspeakers too. I am interested in routing only the iTunes audio through the headphone jack, and everything else to run through my iMac's internal speakers (2007 iMac AL).I saw the SoundFlower thing out there but didn't think that was the ticket

I am having issues with my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (Random freezing up). I took it to the local Apple Store and an associate suggested I back up my hard drive before bring it in for diagnosis. He suggested a 2 TB external drive but others have told me that is way too large. I have heard everything from nothing larger than a 500 GB drive and even one self proclaimed computer wizzard says I can get by with a 10 GB thumb drive. What is the right size and if it is a 1 or 2 TB drive, why do I need such a large one.

I noticed that TIme Machine had stopped backing up, so I looked to see what was happening and I was getting an error saying that the external hard drive I am using for my back up was having problems (sorry I can't remember the specifics right now) and that I needed to fix the drive or possibly erase and reformat the drive. So I reformatted the drive and started a new backup onto the drive. I'm not sure if that backup completed and now I don't see the external hard drive on my desktop. I've made sure all cables are attached and have unplugged and replugged them in but I still don't see the drive.Â

How do you get sound output from BOTH a USB speaker and the headphone jack at the same time? I am trying to drive a headphone speaker driven wireless speaker on my deck while still have audio on my imac.

i'm hoping someone can help me out on this little problemmy usual set up is a pair of speakers connected with jacks via an m-audio usb audio interface, with an external monitor connected via mini-dvi to dvi.now for some reason my audio interface has randomly broken (on a side note, could a power cut have somehow broken a usb peripheral connected to my macbook whilst it was asleep?) so i've hooked up my speakers to the line out to rca. Now for some reason, when i plug the mini dvi connector into my macbook i get an incredible amount of hum. not just a little, alot!

Imac 27" mid-2011 running Maverics 10.9.3 I'm not getting any sound from internal or ext. speakers. I can hear the startup sound when booting up.
System Preferences->Sound only shows Digital Out for OUTPUT and Output Volume is maxed and can't be adjusted. Mute is NOT checked.
I've done an SMC and PRAM reset with no change. I've tried multiple times plugging and unplugging the external speaker cable jack.

I have my stereo plugged into the headphone jack but would like the sound to also come from the internal speakers when the stereo is off without unplugging the jack in back.I tried going to the sound control panel but it only lists the headphone jack. Is there a way to do this?

I usually listen to any output from my iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz, 27", early 2010) through an external amp and speakers, via the analog output (headphone socket). However - I recently disconnected the jack plug to listen through the machine's internal speakers but was greeted with silence. I checked the volume via the kb controls - the mini display appeared on screen suggesting that the volume was set on full, though I could not adjust it at all. I reconnected the jack plug and sound came out from my external speakers as usual. On disconnection, no volume. I searched the forums for ideas, and came across this support article: [url],,, which I followed to the letter.
When I open 'Sounds' in System Preferences, the only output option available to me is 'Digital Out' - there is no option for internal speakers or headphones. However, if I plug in the line-out jack, the options change - only 'Headphones' is available (no 'Digital Out' any more). Following the article, I checked to see if there was a red light in the digital output socket, which there is not.

For some reason, I can't get Logic Express 8 to output audio to my Mac's attached speakers. It outputs fine through my M-Audio interface, though, but I'd just like to listen without headphones.

I have a 27" mid-2011 iMac - today I upgraded it to 16GB RAM and added an SSD (in addition to the existing hard drive). The memory upgrade I performed myself but the SSD upgrade was done by a qualified tech. Now my internal speakers no longer appear as an audio output device, instead I have a "digital out / optical digital-out port".
I cannot adjust the volume (my menu bar volume icon is greyed out) and no sound plays either through the speakers or connected headphones once I login, however I hear the startup chime when I first turn it on, so this doesn't appear to be a hardware problem - it is perhaps a driver issue?
Is there any way I can rectify this without reinstalling OS X? I plan to install Yosemite on the SSD once it's out but would prefer to wait rather than installing Mavericks on it first.I have already tried resetting my SMC, resetting my PRAM a few times and also reinstalled the 10.9.4 combo update, but neither have resulted in any changes.

I have a 21" Samsung Monitor that displays at 1680x1050 which is attached to my 27" 2011 iMac. The iMac only has the display option of 1600x1200 60hz. This is not the right one clearly and the reason i wonder why it is not there is that my MacBook Pro which is 2009 unibody does have this option and both are running the same 10.7.3 OS.

I have a mac mini (solo intel) 10.4 OSX. I have no audio output when attaching an external input source like a CD player or ipod to the input jack on my Mac Mini. Audio output from ITunes or movies clips in IPhoto works fine. I have checked the cables and connections. I have checked the "sound" location in System Preferences to make sure the "built in output" source is selected. The input volume display shows that the audio input is being registered. I have checked "system profiler" in the Utilities folder in Applications to make sure the "built in output" AKA headphone outlet is recognized.
I have the "Soundflower" App. installed but turned off.
why the audio output from the internal sources like ITunes and IPhoto music clips work but the audio output from an external input source does not? Is there some software or a driver required for audio output from an external source that is not required for audio output from an internal source?

I have Mac Pro with Digidesign/ProTools interface connected. I sometimes switch sound output from MP to run through the digidesign hardware. I'm getting message right now saying "selected device has no output controls", not allowing me to switch. I rebooted with the interface already turned on. I've run into theis before- can't figure out what causes this to happen. Sometimes it's OK. ?

I picked up a MBP 15" core i7 high res laptop on Friday. I actually ordered one of those mini displayport -> HDMI awhile back (was going to get a mini, decided no), however when I hook it up to my plasma it won't adjust the resolution to 1920 x 1080, I checked "display" in system settings but it won't let me push it past the native resolution of the laptop screen.
Any suggestions how to get around this? Also it mentions on the website it can push sound over HDMI now, I wasn't able to figure that out either.

13" MacBook Pro 2.3 Intel i5 8gb ram 500gb hybrid Hdd OS X 10.7.4 Thunderbolt port mini display port to DVI and with HDMI adapter works fine mini DP to VGA adapter will see VGA monitor (tested on 5 different monitors) but will not display anything on external display. Newer displays just go into power saving mode and older VGA displays just are blank. Even tried DVI to VGA adapter on mini DP to DVI adapter with same issue. I'm guessing I have no analog output from the DP port. tried the SMC and PRAM reset with no results.

I've got a Headroom Headphone Total Bithead mobile Amp., 2.66 MacPro, and Sennheiser HD650's (that are hard to drive). The amp. has a high and low gain switch. The low gain sounds better, but I can't get enough vol. when on low gain. I've got iTunes level up as high as it can go. I've played around with Sound prefs. and the Audio/Midi sound levels. They all seem to actually be the same vol. control.
I also see that iTunes, under "Get Info" has an individual vol. adjustment, but I'm not sure if I really want the sound files to be pumped up for when I use them on my iPhone.

if there is a way to use multiple external monitors on my MacBook Pro using the single DVI-output provided. From reading previous posts, I heard you can be able to use Matrox's DualHead2Go for splitting the DVI-output. Is this device capable with MacBook Pro even though Matrox device requires an Analog output?

I use studio monitors (speakers) with my macbook pro 13 (2010) and a samsung 1080p external display. Whenever I plug the display in, it causes a hum in the speakers, and weirdly the pitch of this hum varies depending on the brightness of the contents of my screen. I have borrowed my friends USB audio interface, and I still experience the same problem, except the hum is now cleaner and louder. I would assume this rules out problems with the internal sound card. Â
In both cases, the hum stops when the sound card/output 'goes to sleep' (ie after there has been no sound output for a few seconds). Also the hum only starts when the computer is outputting to the display. In the few seconds between physically plugging the display in, and the mac sending a signal to it, there is no hum. This is why I'm starting to think this may be a problem with the computer and not the monitor. The monitor is a cheap (£120) monitor - samsung p2270HD, and also has a TV tuner and stuff.Â
What I need to know is whether this is a problem with the computer, bleeding the signal through to the sound output, or whether it's my kind of crappy monitor. Another thing, might it help if I changed from VGA (analogue) to DVI (digital) video output?

I had audio coming out my external speakers.
Then I fiddled with both Soundflower and Audacity for some audio recording.
I have since then uninstalled both but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get audio coming out my external speakers again.
Everything is coming thru my imac speakers.
Apple>Sys Pref> Sound> give me no options to direct audio to external speakers.

My internal speakers work fine. When I plug in headphones, the left side has normal audio for about one second, then becomes barely audible. The right side is barely audible all the time. If I unplug them, and re-plug them, the same exact thing happens. Everything looks good in the sound properties page. I know the headphones work because I tried them in another device.
