On my IMac the brightness flickers when I first turn it on?

1. Screen Brightness is on. Desktop functioning as normal, according to the brightness set.
2. Randomly, the entire screen brightness will switch 'off' - but not go to sleep - it is set at the brightness level, as if you would have turned it all the way down manually. Automatically, my screen goes from:
3. After clicking the brightness button on the screen - when I look closely - the brightness control is set at its previous level, but the screen is not at that brightness! darkest screen (above, right) + brightness settings up   Â
4. In order to solve the issue, I have to hold down the minimize brightness button and then turn it back up, from the lowest setting. This only works about one in five times. All other times, the screen briefly flashes and then goes dark again.    Â

My screen flickers all the time. It goes blank and sometimes it takes a while to go back to normal. It is ot 100% anymore. The computer works perfect, but screen doesn't
View 7 Replies View RelatedLast night I was working in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop when my screen began to flicker like crazy and eventually froze. I could still move the cursor around but nothing would work. I couldn't force quit any of the applications or shut down the system. It eventually shut itself down and after restarting everything seemed normal. About 20 minutes later it did the same thing as I was switching between Safari windows using Expose'. (I recorded a small clip of the flickering and put it on youtube if that helps: [url]...?v=UBjRwRu4IOg ) After the second time this happened I again tried to start it up and it loaded to a gray screen, no startup chime, no apple logo. Nothing. I hit the power button and it shut down again. And the next time it booted all the way. I then shut it down with the intention of calling Apple Care today but apparently my Apple Care ran out in the last month or so. So, I'd have to pay $49 to talk to them about this issue. I thought I'd come here first.

Is this bad? Just started happening yesterday. Restarted, but persistent... when I drag a file from an open folder on my desktop, the entire desktop flickers like you can see below. Like ghosted images of all the icons and open windows get scrambled around. It happens in a fraction of a second, but I was able to capture a screen shot. Please let me know what this means.Â

The brightness goes up when you plug in your MBA, but then over time it just goes up and up. I honestly like my brightness pretty low (rarely more than half, typically at 3-5 notches), but it just keeps on going up and up. I almost never set it above half, but multiple times a day, I notice that it looks pretty high and it's at like 3/4 so I put it it down to about 1/3, but after a while, it's just up again.
Anyone else notice this? What is it, why does it do this? How can I fix it? I don't mind not having auto-brightness (even though I loved it), as long as my screen doesn't keep going up.
My iMac is turning itself on and off in the middle of the night. How can I correct the situation?

Purchased my iMac 27" back in October 2011. It was fine up until around February this year until my screen brightness started flickering automatically. I have the ambient/auto brightness setting switched off and after many discussions with apple care on the phone I have been advised to bring my iMac back in to the store.Â
1) is this a common problem a lot of people have experienced with iMacs?
2) Do you think it will be repaired or replaced?
3) Does this happen with the macbook airs as I was planning to purchase one for university in September, however if this problem occurs with their laptop range then I will opt for windows.Â

I've been using Pc's for the past 30 odd years so am totally new to Mac. I'm doing my best to adapt to this new different OS and so far have found some things more user friendly but others ? I've more or less given up on those as Mac doesn't seem to do those things. These are probably Windows based and I'm assuming Mac has its own alternatives that I haven't discovered yet. Anyway, my immediate problem is this goddamned frustrating situation when I try to re-activate the comp' after waking it from 'sleep'. Sometimes its fine but others, it comes back on but freezes and the only option I have is to turn it off at the switch and do a re-boot!
